Dear brothers and sisters, I am a female Catholic staying in Qatar for 8 years now. Me and my previous bf for 2 yrs (who before was staying in Qatar) decided that i have to be converted to Islam to marry him, he is a muslim but on my wedding day he did not arrived to marry me. I was devastated when he said he’s already married and he’s scared to marry another woman again. From that day i decided not to talk to him again and have my life went on and continue being a catholic.

4 years passed and i am now engaged to an American man who truly loves me. And we’re planning to get married in a Catholic Church or Anglican Church here. I havent tell my fiance about it its because ever since i did not practice it and never had any plans to practice. i dont know how to start to tell him, all i know is I am a 100 percent catholic mind, heart and soul. i go to church and pray and baptized and rasied as a catholic. however i have a certificate that says i converted to Islam, is there any problem if we marry in a Christian church here in this country? I am a christian and i dont want to be a muslim 😦 its a lesson for me to learn that love isnt changing or converting anybodys religion.

please help me, i need some advice from you guys.

God bless you all!

thank you in advance.

You should go to confession and also speak to a priest as soon as you can.

Find a Catholic priest and talk to him about your situation. Once you are baptized as a Catholic you will always be a Catholic; however, leaving the Church for another religion is apostasy and it is grave matter that it might result in a latae sententiae excommunication. Excommunication is a disciplinary sanction that does not expel people from the Church but it does not allow them to receive the sacraments, including matrimony, until the person seeks forgiveness. Once you have solved all the issues in regard to the conversion to Islam, then you also have to talk to the priest about your marriage. As a Catholic you can marry a nob-Catholic Christian but you still need to be married following the laws of the Church, and a priest can help you with that. I think that clearing your situation for a valid Catholic marriage will not require a lot of time but it will require on your side a clear understanding and commitment to the teachings of the Church. A meeting with a Catholic priest is necessary and the sooner the better.

The man you are engaged to is an American. Are you? Do the autorities in Qatar know you are Muslim?

It might be easier to leave Qatar and marry in your home country and not go back.

jlo,

Wow. You are in quite a predicament and it sounds like you’ve endured a lot of pain, both by being deceived by your husband and also by being separated from your spiritual home. You have been on quite a journey and you are now facing telling someone you love about a past mistake that is very painful. I feel for you and I’m praying for you.

But first and foremost, the Catholic family is your family and the Catholic church is your home. Your God knows and loves you and always has A priest should and would help you, to help you spiritually heal. You made a mistake and in that regard, you are in excellent company. All of God’s beloved make mistakes and are called home for a reason. I would not let shame prevent you from anything.

I am not sure how things go socially in Qatar. I’ve heard its very democratic, but I have no idea what that really means in religious circles. Id be cautious about that part.

Your relationship to your fiancee, though separate from this issue, is intertwined. Can you separate them? Of course, honesty is the only way to deal with this, but I would advise taking it slow, expressing your love, your fear and your pain over this mistake.

From what I know, once you are baptized a Catholic, you remain a Catholic. The fact that you converted to Islam does not cancel that out. But you should ask a priest because I’m not sure 🙂 Good luck 🙂

Go to your priest and tell him everything. Explain the situation and follow his instructions on what to do next. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT try to marry without the guidance of your priest!!! It will only make a much bigger mess for you to have to fix later. Go and see your priest as soon as possible!

Good luck and please let us know how it goes. But NO WEDDING until you talk to your priest. Be honest and tell him EVERYTHING.

I will certainly keep you in my prayers! You’re doing the right thing. Just think of the testimony you can give to others who are considering converting just to marry! God may use you greatly, dear one. Just take it one step at a time. Glad you came here, and please have courage. I for one am glad that you did not get married!

Follow the advice of your priest and don’t worry, the Holy Spirit has a way of working everything out!

God bless you sister and welcome back to the true faith.

You will be in my prayers and I am sure the prayers of many on here.

We will keep you in our family’s prayer today. God Bless you

Dear jlo1981:
I am so sorry to hear that you were so disappointed and hurt by the man you were planning to marry. Sometimes we are naive and only believe what we wish to believe, especially when it comes to love and marriage. And sometimes, we might love a person who does not know his own heart, so how can we know if he is true or not?

I agree that you should go to confession, or at least meet with a priest just to talk.

As far as boyfriends and marriage go, I hope that you will listen to the opinions of your trusted friends and family, sometimes they can see things that we cannot see.
I am glad that you learned to be true to your own Catholic faith. Strive to be true to your own conscience in your relationships and in all of your decisions. Always bear in mind, God talks to you in your heart, not your boyfriend’s heart.
Wishing you the best,
A gray haired grandma in the US

This is a very valuable advice that comes from a person who is mature and experience enough (I note the grandma part :)) to think impartially especially in a case of conversion to another religion and marriage. It is true that when we are young, though not always the case, we tend to put all our stock in the things of the moment thus we make mistakes along the way. Getting the opinion of trusted friends and family members which we often want to avoid in personal matter is very wise indeed. These are the people who will be frank with you and may say the thing that you may not want to hear. Very often if we had followed the counsel of trusted people in our lives who can see the things from outside, many a mistake could have been avoided.

I think the OP is on the right track in realizing her predicament. There are good advices here. My only concern would be the local law on leaving Islam. You can check that out. Sometimes the local Islamic authority can make it extremely difficult for you. They can harass you if they know that you are a Muslim who is going to convert to another religion. But you are a Muslim convert, probably that would be on your side as perhaps they may be more lenient on cases like yours.

God bless you.
