But you are confusing the difference between a sinner who honestly and sincerely repents (or seeking repentence) and strives to live according to the Spirit and one who obstinately and publicly justifies his sin. Jim, even if alcoholism were proven to be caused by some genetic factor, it would still be considered disordered. Having an alcoholic “gene” will not magically correct the “orientation” to drink oneself to death or grant one persmission and absolution to do so. Anything that compels a person to sinful and harmful behavior, regardless of it’s origin, is disordered. But when supposed Catholics commit a PUBLIC dishonor, scandal, etc., of the Church, then Bishops and priests have the DUTY to refuse communion.
