Not to be confused with the homosexual ‘men’ who have infected the priesthood and so damaged the Church. Catholic girly men are most likely heterosexual and aren’t necessarily effeminate in their manners but are girly in that they are motivated by their feelings and emotions rather than their intellect. Catholic girly men can be bishops, priests or laymen.

For example, Catholic girly men will think that the Church is unjust for not ordaining women. They are unwilling to consider the Church’s teaching about not ordaining women because they consider it discrimination.

However, Catholic girly aren’t necessarily heterdox in their Catholic Faith.

Catholic girly men think that having girl altar boys is right because it would be unfair to have only boys serve the altar. Plus those little girls look so cute at the front ofo the Church during Mass.

Catholic girly men like to hold hands during the Pater Noster and may even reach across the aisle to do so.

Catholic girly men think that the hand shaking at the sign of peace is one of the high points of the Mass because it helps us ‘feel’ like community.

Catholic girly men think that it is important or good that Catholic Churches have a greeter(s) prior to the Mass so the people ‘feel’ welcome while never giving a thought that perhaps praying the Rosary as a group prior to Mass would actually be efficacious.

Catholic girly men like to address their priest as Fr. Bob as opposed to Fr. Smith because, you know, Fr. Bob is just like one of us.

Catholic girly men make sure to always use words like ‘laypeople’ and ‘humankind’, because we wouldn’t want to offend anyone by using the proper English ‘laymen’ and ‘mankind’.

Catholic girly men like to sing Glory and Praise ditties but don’t care much for traditional hymns.

Catholic girly men like to actively participate in the Mass by being lectors or by distributing Holy Communion because it is a way of giving back to the Church when in actuality both these ‘ministries’ really don’t accomplish anything other than blurring the distinction between the laity and the priesthood.

Catholic gilry men don’t like the Mass celebrated in Latin because it’s a ‘dead’ language and they don’t understand Latin. Never mind that traditional missals have the Latin and vernacular language on facing pages so laymen can easily follow along but further untold numbers of young Catholics (under 10 years of age) are able to learn the Latin and recite the responses.

Catholic girly men don’t like to receive Holy Commuion on the tongue because it’s like they’re sticking their tongue out at Jesus or some other cockamamie reason.

Catholic girly men don’t think proper dress for Mass is really very important because at least those inappropriately dressed people are coming to Church.

Catholic girly men are uncomfortable when the topics of abortion, contraception, sin, Hell etc. are spoken of during the sermon not because they disagree with Church teaching on these topics but because they are concerned that orthodox teaching on these topics from the pulpit can upset people and drive them away from the Church.

I am sorry perhaps I am missing something but what exactly was thepoint of htis post???

I agree that the loss of intellectual rigor is problem. I would even say that the general lack of critical thinking skills is more noticeable in men, since we expect an emotion-dominated approach from women. However, I expect using terminology like “girly men” to create more heat than light. Using inflammatory language is not going to encourage thoughtful responses, but the very emotionalism that you lament. I suggest using a more neutral term for the phenomenon you describe such as “the feminization of social discourse.”

I think it’s safe, if you include the other thread he started recently, to place Steve into the realm of troll-land.

You need to stop watching old “Hans and Franz” skits on Saturday Night Live.

Led by this comment to check Steve’s posting history, I reached a different conclusion. I would not say he is a troll, but neither does he exemplify the Catholic intellectual tradition to which he implies an allegiance. I find his posts highly emotional. This makes him as much of a “girly man” as the objects of his complaints.

This is great.

This isn’t as strong and as clear a contribution, but "Catholic girly men don’t seem to see the value of reflecting much on the Spirit and life of St Joseph…‘do and disappear’ ".

I was told some good advice for families whose men deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan. Have your wife put some pictures of St Joseph and of the father around prominent spots in house, where child will see them often. Help the children to understand the unique role of St Joseph in the Holy Family, and of the father in the family and his role also in the Church.

Do quietly and strongly and disappear.

St Joseph, pray for us.

I think we can chalk this up as written by someone who does not understand that the form of liturgy can (and does) change.

I think we can chalk this up as written by someone who does not understand the very fundamental nature of the Church.

Since this thread does does not show any signs of turning into an intelligent discussion of Catholic manhood, this post is in danger of going without response. I just wanted to note this is a worthwhile idea before it is lost in an oblivion of snarky comments.

It is a very solid suggestion. I was expecting this thread to get deleted promptly, but if it sticks around hopefully something worthy can come of it. 🙂

Hmm, I just assumed the purpose was to smear women (“girls”) as being naturally silly, frivolous, emotional, and barely Catholic. Not exactly the way a traditional Catholic man looks on femininity, is it?
My understanding was that any smearing of women was secondary. It seemed intended to apply an insulting term to people who hold positions with which the OP disagrees.

I think it would be fair to say that traditionally femininity is associated with emotion while masculinity is associated with logic. In this way of thinking emotion and logic are complementary and there is nothing insulting to either sex in this correlation.

In my experience, men are more likely to be logical than women, but it is a rare quality in general. Perhaps this is especially true in online discussions.

 So your not Catholic then?

since OP’s premise is based entirely on his own subjective definition of the category he defines, to even discuss it is worthless. Shall we go into his slam on the entire female gender implicit in his assumptions that we are led exclusively by emotion?

I don’t think it would be fair, nor would it be born out by impartialobservation that compares all women with all men.

I phrased my post hoping to make a distinction between reality and what has been traditionally believed. These are two separate questions. It is possible that it was widely held that men are logical and women emotional regardless of what impartial observation would reveal.
