Why is there so much hatred towards the Catholic church?

On other Christian forums i have looked at, the hatred is intense. They all claim we are idolitrers and our beliefs are unBiblical. They hate the Pope and anything to do with Catholicism.

I have tried to defend the faith too but one gets swamped with abuse etc.

(If in wrong section, please move, thanks)

Because they don’t know who we are. Plain and simple.

“The world hated me first” -Jesus

The Catholic Church is Jesus’ Own Body on Earth, and the world hates Him.

Simple as that.

I am dissmayed by the about of hatred slung at us.

The first thing i always see is “Its not Biblical”. “Where is that in the Bible?”

It has made me question my faith on many occassions.

Thing is, some of the Christian forums are a great place to visit but there is a lot of CC hatred.

Having never been on an Internet forum until I came here, I can say I’ve seen the most hatred in real life from pro choice people who are non religious. Asking someone who is pro choice and familiar with the church’s teaching on birth control their thoughts usually leads to red faced screaming in my experience. Several of my non Christian friends have told me “I hate the Catholic Church”. Where my Protestant friends are just intrigued about my mass attendance and usually admit they don’t know much about the RCC.

Also remember that those who are set in their ways are rarely convinced by anything on the internet. When you are in real life you get a personal connection which makes the other person’s argument more effective.

No so on the internet. I was arguing with a Protestant on another forum who insisted that Catholics worship Mary. Even after I gave all of the arguments why Catholics don’t worship Mary, the Protestant came back and said, “Well, you still do.”

How can you win that argument?

“The hatred against Divinity is not the result always of unbelief, but very often the affect of antibelief. Conscience, Christ, and the gift of faith make evil men uneasy in their sin. Many men sneer at virtue because it makes vice uncomfortable.”

Ven. Fulton Sheen -The Life of Christ

I think it’s due to a lot of misunderstanding. I still remember the first time someone from a Protestant church told me with a straight face that “Catholics aren’t Christian”; I was beyond baffled. But then I find out that this is a bizarrely common thought spread through ignorance and misunderstanding.

So they think Catholics are in some way false Christians and take umbrage. I have once, only ever once, managed to explain to one of these people that intercession is different to idolatry but all too often they don’t want to listen.

The more you comprehend the reality of Satan, and his active role on Earth to devour souls, the easier it is to understand this question. As time goes along hedonistic ventures, the culture of death, the wages of sin, all rise up, and what is good and Holy become more persecuted. Anti-Catholicism is just part of a long diabolic campaign of hatred against God and Church. This “campaign” by Satan is waged from within, and outside of the Church, but the Church will prevail.

Because they desperately need us to be wrong for them to justify their own existence. Because if we’re right then they have no reason for whatever sect they belong to to exist and they would in fact be morally obligated to become Catholic.

Some of them realize this and become fervent Catholics. Others swing the other way into anti Catholicism.

Remind them that the Church came first…then the canon was put together, BY the Catholic church.
They are carrying around a Catholic book.
Show them the pages online that take the Catholic Mass line by line, and show that it is indeed, Scriptural
As everyone has said, it’s just plain ignorance.
Their pastors who were not trained by the Church have made up out of whole cloth something, and much of it is a rebuttal of the first church on earth, the one that Christ founded.
Pray for their awakening, and return.

Catholics are the original Christians and lot of the hate comes from the devil’s influence and his desire to destroy Christ’s Church plus human error

“It doesn’t matter what you call it, all worship is worship” - from a Protestant after I tried to explain the difference between Latria, Hyperdulia, and Dulia.
Even when you tell them a person cannot worship against their will (it must be a choice) and that doing so would be a violation of the 1st commandment…

I find that there are several reasons. My background is 22 years active Jehovah’s Witness and a good many years as a protestant.

First off there is misinformation about the Catholic church and what it really teaches.

While a protestant and JW, I never considered or was taught about Christian Tradition prior to the compiling of the bible.

I was also taught sola scripture which now seems utterly preposterous.

What I encountered as a JW and a protestant, is what seems to be an arrogance with Catholics regarding them being the one and only way to God, they do not seem to want to humble themselves to find out why they are misunderstood nor to correct misinterpretations of what the church teaches.

As a relatively new Catholic and I wax more Orthodox being that is how I came into the church, I am hoping to be a wee bit kinder in explaining the church, and what it teaches instead of just proclaiming my catholicism and others need to step up.

The hatred is based on misinformation passed on from generation to generation. I would use the word indoctrination, but not necessarily in a pejorative manner. The beginning might be traced back to the Reformation itself. It was a way to justify the separation from the Catholic faith.

In interacting and answering people with these objections, I find it useful to try to find out the motivation: closed minded hate or disgust vs. a genuine concern for the others salvation.

I have seen it here many times on CAF the other way around (some would say “whut where” but really just follow a few threads and see the name calling!!). And this is still a very “held back” group due to moderators banning you if you go on a tangent either way.

I honestly never understood this quote. The Blessed B. Sheen never had actual evidence. America is quite a big country with many people. REALISTICALLY you will find MORE than a 100 people who do understand the Catholic faith but still disagree. People disagreeing does not mean you are ignorant.

This again takes me back to my old question.

Does it mean until I studied "Catholicism " enough I will become Catholic? Until that point I do not understand it? Because if I did, I would have been Catholic?
