Has anyone else delved into Catholic history and found the utter corruption and moral depravity shocking? I find it hard to really be proud of my Catholic roots when there is sooooooo much corruption in it. I wish it was one or two isolated incidences but corruption and lust for power seem to pervade every second of the Church’s history. 🤷 And it continues to this day.

People are sinners. Nothing surprising about that.

However, overall the Catholic Church has been a beacon of hope for the world and a steady guide in the truth of the Gospel.

First, i believe you may be overstating the issue, second remember that though the Church was ordained by Christ, it is peopled by fallible men. FInally, there are lots of heroes of the faith: Thomas More, John Fisher, Thomas Aquinas, etc. JUst pray and keep the faith.:signofcross:

I think the focus is too narrow; History is disturbing. Period. Look into the history of anything/any peoples. When your history goes back thousands of years, you are bound to find some skeletons.

People are sinful and the Church on earth is made up entirely of sinners. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit is steering this ship. 😉

God bless you,

Kelly

Lets see. Off the top of my head.

Attila the Hun is turned back after meeting Pope Leo I (the Great)

We invented modern musical notation

The Church saved the science of the Romans and Greeks and brought civilisation back to Europe after the barbarians sacked Rome.

The Catholic Church has done immense good and there is a lot to be proud of.

Can’t the same be said for pretty much every group or country at some point in its history?

Corruption and moral depravity isn’t solely a trait of the Church. It’s a trait of humanity in general.

I know 😦 😦 😦 😦

Take away Jesus Christ - & our sinfulness, including all its horrible results, is what is left. This is why His Grace is terribly important - it is He Who makes His Church Holy: it is Holy, with His Holiness: quite simply because we have none; but in Him, there is nothing but Holiness, Grace, Wisdom, Righteousness & every blessing: that is what keeps His Church in being 😃 The Glory is from Him & to Him - not to us 🙂

True - BUT only the RC claims to be God’s representative on earth, the holder of moral law, the most righteous of the righteous, etc. As such, most folks would say that the RC should be held to a much higher standard.

No more shocking than humanity in general. Spend more time studying the saints, and you’ll learn more about what the church is here for. Cultivate humility rather than pride in your “Catholic roots.” That’s more the point of Christianity, and it’s the point that all the corrupt, morally depraved members of our faith missed themselves. Spend more time studying those who got it right rather than those who got it wrong, you’ll learn a whole lot more and be much less discouraged.

You know, you could replace “Catholic” in your post with “USA” and the post would still make sense. Despite that, I know that I am still very proud of our country - even with all it’s flaws, it is still the best! All nations, and all churches, have things in their history that are regrettable. For our part, we must do all we can to improve our country and church and right the wrongs of the past. Pray!

God Bless!

You have a consistently Christian attitude without being patronizing.

👍

The Church has always been full of sinners. Look at the eve of the birth of the Church, the eve of Christ’s salvific sacrifice. Christ twelve Apostles, the first Bishops - one utterly betrayed Christ and the other eleven fled from his side. Peter the first Pope denied even knowing Christ three times.

The Church is not holy because of us, but because of Him.

The Church is not a museum of Saints, but a hospital for sinners.

Nobody has a “corner on the market” when it comes to disturbing history. Human beings do some pretty revolting things to each other. However, I’m convinced that *far more *wonderful acts have been done by religious people than horrible acts.

Despite all that, Catholic belief and practices have not changed since its ineption at first Pentecost. Forget everything else, this is truly awesome. It’s the works of God in His church. It would be quite ordinary if Catholicism is run only by good men and women because we can expect the consequence. But despite all the too human personalities in the church, she never crumbles and never changes.

But look at the Godly men and women that this church has produced. Again, it’s wonderfully awesome.

Suupah, The Church is the vessel to Heaven, because God created Her!..but She is NOT HEAVEN!

Like any vessel, not all the passengers like their seats. From time to time, some want a turn at the helm, also.

But those in the know, trust that the vessel is sound because of Her Builder, and trust in The Captain The Builder Chose!

I myself am a stowaway, content with the pig sty, covered in excrement, as long as I am on board!!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm…this morning I was reflecting on the blood bath the Martyrs of Douay went through to bring a little peace to God’s people for a while. Yes Catholic history is rather disturbing isn’t it? Alleluia!

Peace,

Gail
