I think the focus is too narrow; History is disturbing. Period. Look into the history of anything/any peoples. True - BUT only the RC claims to be God’s representative on earth, the holder of moral law, the most righteous of the righteous, etc. As such, most folks would say that the RC should be held to a much higher standard.
No more shocking than humanity in general. Spend more time studying the saints, and you’ll learn more about what the church is here for. Cultivate humility rather than pride in your “Catholic roots.” That’s more the point of Christianity, and it’s the point that all the corrupt, morally depraved members of our faith missed themselves. Spend more time studying those who got it right rather than those who got it wrong, you’ll learn a whole lot more and be much less discouraged.Has anyone else delved into Catholic history and found the utter corruption and moral depravity shocking? You know, you could replace “Catholic” in your post with “USA” and the post would still make sense. Despite that, I know that I am still very proud of our country - even with all it’s flaws, it is still the best! All nations, and all churches, have things in their history that are regrettable. For our part, we must do all we can to improve our country and church and right the wrongs of the past. The Church has always been full of sinners. Look at the eve of the birth of the Church, the eve of Christ’s salvific sacrifice. Christ twelve Apostles, the first Bishops - one utterly betrayed Christ and the other eleven fled from his side. Despite all that, Catholic belief and practices have not changed since its ineption at first Pentecost. Forget everything else, this is truly awesome. It’s the works of God in His church. It would be quite ordinary if Catholicism is run only by good men and women because we can expect the consequence.
