Catholic Hospital Saves Pregnancies of Women Undergoing Abortions

A Chicago medical center has found itself in a controversial position, as the first Roman Catholic hospital in the country to help women halt an abortion midway through the process.

Resurrection Medical Center began the new practice after pro-life activists started bringing in women who, in the second trimester of their pregnancy, had gone to a clinic for an abortion and then changed their minds. The process used by the clinic for a second trimester pregnancy takes 2-3 days to complete, so by stopping the process early on, Resurrection doctors are hoping to preserve the pregnancy.

On the one hand, I’m really glad Resurrection healthcare is trying to help women who change their minds, and decide they don’t want an abortion afterall, and give them support - both medical and emotional. Even Planned Parenthood is supportive of Resurrection’s interventions. They’re doing good, that’s for sure.

On the other hand, I hope these women aren’t worse off by trying to stop the process while it’s still going on by just causing a miscarriage or leading to infection. The odds to actually halting the process and saving the pregnancy are against them. Once the laminaria is inserted into the cervix, just removig it may not stop the process. I think it will cause my problems down the road, particularly emotional damage to the woman if the process isn’t halted, but is unsuccessful in saving the pregnancy.

What is needed is better prenatal counseling so that these women don’t choose the laminaria in the first place 🤷 The article is talking about women who, in the middle of a later pregnancy, are deciding under some kind of duress to take the laminaria, and then deciding they don’t want it afterall. I see this particular process becoming illegal in the future, regardless of the legality of abortion.
 
What?!? Abortion protesters are some women’s only hope for exercising their right to choose?
