Dale,

In a letter to dioceses and religious orders I think in 2001? I’ll try to find it for you… Rome advised superiors who had men who identified as transgender to 1.care for them 2. they would not be allowed to be priests any longer and 3. gave some norms of what the Church taught exactly as of right now regarding surgery. I think planetout.com actually gave a review of this when it came out. My research is in gender studies with an emphasis in transgender issues. I was pleasantly surprised myself at this letter.

Shane, thank you for replying.

What an interesting subject - I think it would allow folks to see the world in a different light.

I wonder if we are thinking of the same document. Catholic News Service (CNS) broke the story of a sub secretum (under secrecy) directive issued to papal representatives in 2000, but apparently sat upon in the U.S. for a couple years. Once it was disseminated, word was leaked to CNS.

The news story is no longer available on CNS’ website, but it appears to have been archived at a transgender advocacy site:

Please let me know if we are thinking of the same document. If you have the actual text of the letter, I would very much appreciate reading it.

Peace be with you,

Dale

Your responses on here scare me. I think you all should look up exactly what the Church teaches. Though it believes that a person’s gender does not change with sex reassignment surgery (the person undergoing surgery would agree as well, but for different reasons), it also says that because of the problems with gender dysphoria, suicide attempts, and depression, that in some circumstances the person should go through surgery. Look it up.

If you are going to make assertions about what is and is not Church teaching, the burden falls on you to provide documentation to back it up.

That you claim that your research is in gender studies does nothing to enhance your credibility as to what Church teaching is; in fact, it detracts from it rather significantly. This results in even more pressure on you to support your position with magisterial documents that support your position. A letter from some Church official somewhere does not qualify.

Recall also that the Church teaches against mutilations and cosmetic surgery (e.g. "face lift or breast augmentation) that is not correcting a serious condition, such as facial scars.

Those are extraordinary rare cases with fewer than 200 births annually worldwide. A.
Wrong. XXY occurs at a rate of about 1/500 to 1/1500 births, period. That is MANY MANY more than ‘200 a year’. And that is just from ONE way to have XXY chromosomes, there are other conditions that can cause similar results. Intersex (Also called hermaphroditism) is as common as 1/2000 births.
