Catholic hospital to allow transgender surgery after being sued

aly City, CA, Mar 4, 2008 / 04:19 am (CNA).- A Catholic hospital that refused to allow its facilities to be used for breast implant surgery on a man that had undergone a sex-change operation will now allow the procedure, the California Catholic Daily reports. In 2006 a doctor told Charlene Hastings, 57, that Seton Medical Center in Daly City would not allow him to perform breast-enhancement surgery on a transsexual. Hastings claimed that upon further inquiry a surgical coordinator at the hospital said to him, “It’s not God’s will” and “God made you a man.”
A 2006 memo sent by Seton Medical Center to physicians said, “transgender procedures or procedures that are part of the transgendering process may not be performed at Seton, as Seton is a Catholic Hospital.”
Hastings filed suit against the hospital in San Francisco Superior Court in December. The suit alleged that Seton violated state law, which allows religiously-based hospitals to refuse to perform abortions but makes no exemption for denying elective surgery for transgender operations.

Transgender, breast augmentation is a right?
On February 27 the San Francisco television station CBS 5 News reported that the hospital had issued a written statement to CBS 5 that said, “We regret any confusion that may have come from this situation. We want this patient and her physician to know that they are welcome at Seton Medical Center.”
The hospital still said that Catholic teaching prohibits the accommodation of sex-change operations.
When will the hospitals and educational institutions remember that they are CATHOLIC?
If the institution does not follow Catholic teaching then they should not be able to say they are a Catholic Hospital.
The CBS 5 News station characterized the statement as a “veiled apology.” It said, “transgender Charlene Hastings has claimed moral victory against Catholics.”
Maybe it is time to stand firm of the teachings and beliefs of Holy Mother Church. This IMHO is not a moral victory but an immoral travisty. S/he is still going to go after the money, big surprise.

Because there are many hospitals available, no one hospital can be made to perform any medical procedures. Basic Law.
Because of freedom of religion and documentation that some particular action is in conflict with a documented moral precept of a valid religion and the practice of that religion in accordance with the documented beliefs of that religion, then this hospital is being victimized by this person and this person is a nuisance. Basic Law.
Let the judge worry about the fact that he or she, the judge that is, may some day want, and not need, this very elective surgery themself!!! 😦 😦 😦😦

Isn’t breast augmentation plastic surgery? He should have just gone to a place that practices cosmetic operations not a regular medical facility. Maybe it’s just me but cosmetic surgery is called elective surgery for a reason and is not on the same plan as say open heart surgery or brain surgery. There’s no urgency involved. So usually insurance doesn’t pay for such procedures meaning he was paying out of pocket. I didn’t know catholic or religiously affiliated hospitals performed cosmetic procedures, that always strikes me as more of a secular vein of medicine(?)… Not that I’m opposed to cosmetic surgery, just that… well it seems odd. It’s not really Catholic initiative to give beauty advice.
There is no faith that I’m aware of that has a set standard of what is beautiful or attractive, and I hope it stays that way.

I believe that any Catholic institution, whether it be a Catholic hospital or school, should close down, rather than be forced to do or teach anything that is against Church law or Catholic beliefs. If this happened a few times, you would see a lot of these problems disappear. Just my opinion.

Wow.

When faced with giving a transsexual a breast enhancement, you guys favor closing the hospital? Wow.

Well the dude was gonna sue the hospital for not giving him a breast augmentation surgery. Instead of just accepting their refusal, he threw a subpoena at them…how’s that for petty?

Guy sounds like he’s being more self-righteous than anything. Maybe the hospital could just put him under, and then transport him to a different hospital? Doesn’t sound too legal though…

Just another example of the double standard of ‘separation of church and state.’ The government intervening on religious affairs is half of that statement, let’s not forget.
