Agree completely.
I am a prolife pharmacist. No dispensing of BC or abortifacients. Never, to my knowledge, have I picked up a patient because of my stance.

I remember when DMC (Divine Mercy Care) Pharmacy, a pro-life business, closed down. They were open only 18 months, but just couldn’t pull in enough regular customers. However, their pro-life, integrated OB/GYN medical practice, Tepeyac Family Center, has been doing well.I am a prolife pharmacist. No dispensing of BC or abortifacients. Never, to my knowledge, have I picked up a patient because of my stance.
A commenter, in reaction to the news, claimed that most people who do not want birth control also do not care whether their pharmacy sells it. I am not sure whether that is true, but DMCs experience does leave me wondering.

The controversy in Bartlesville is not over. Jane Phillips Medical Center had previously conducted vasectomies and tubal ligations at an off-site clinic. But on Jan 1st, it stopped providing them, consistent with the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
Local OB-GYN Robert Oliver MD, who is not employed by the hospital or St. John, has been outspoken about JPMC’s new policies.
“The decision handed down was nebulous in some ways to protect the sensitivity of the true origin of the mandate,” Oliver said. “I feel this recent ruling allows any and all approved birth control measures to be used short of abortion. I am concerned about this sudden ‘flip-flop’ of support and would encourage my hospital-employed colleagues to read their employment contract very carefully.
“Under the same heading is the question if birth control protects my patient from unwanted pregnancy or the choice of abortion, why after thirty-nine years were tubal ligations and vasectomies suddenly stopped on January 1, 2014? The practice of medicine and medical judgments also include the question of sterilization for our patients. How can you abide by the directives mentioned in the unsigned document of (March 31) and still express independent professional judgment?

As an aspiring physician this attitude really bugs me. Let’s examine why…
- The rights of a doctor to obey their conscience should be absolute. Let’s look at the situation in Nazi Germany, where the final solution started in Hospitals under supervision of Doctors and Nurses. Wouldn’t we all agree that those physicians had a duty to obey their conscience? We can also take a look at a less extreme example. Let us suppose a patient comes to you and request medication that would provide no clear benefit and might result in serious side effects. Even if the patient demands that you provide that medication, wouldn’t you agree that the moral action would be to refuse prescription (albeit with a referral so that the patient can seek a second opinion)? Practicing medicine is a moral enterprise, and you are morally responsible for what actions to take in caring for their patients.
- In this case (as in most other cases in the western world), contraception is readily available at a low price whether a physician does or does not participate. By forcing these institutions to provide contraceptives, we are essentially saying that a doctor’s conscience rights are less than a patients rights to be mildly inconvenienced.
- As far as I know, these institutions are private. No one is forcing these patients to go to this hospital. Now, in the article, this Catholic center seems to be the only care facility. If citizens dislike Catholic ethics and want non-Catholic care then they should attract individuals to build and maintain a non-Catholic care center. Heck, since this care facility will attend to 99% of your other health care needs, just get one doctor to rent out an office and perform those procedures that the Catholic center won’t do.
- The only reason this center is there, providing to the other health needs of these citizens, is out of their Christian identity. The same Christian identity that inspires these individuals to practice medicine also inspires them to not provide contraception. Isn’t it a bit much to ask these individuals to maintain those parts of their mission that you like and to discard those that you do not like?
- The fact that some (even many) Catholic health care providers do provide contraception just means that some (even many) Catholic health care providers have strayed for their identity. This means nothing for those institutions that maintained their Catholic identity.

They should disassociate from their Catholic identity. From Archbishop Chaput:
“Catholic is a word that has real meaning. We don’t control or invent that meaning as individuals. We inherit it from the gospel and the experience of the Church over the centuries. We can choose to be something else, but if we choose to call ourselves Catholic, then that word has consequences for what we believe and how we act. We can’t truthfully claim to be Catholic and then act as though we’re not.”
Those institutions should just admit that they don’t have what it takes to be called “Catholic”. Everybody has to make tough choices…its time they made theirs.
And chose to participate actions that endanger the souls of the women they serve. Again, if they don’t believe it, then remove all ties to the Catholic Church and their Catholic identity. Its pretty simple.
