Catholic laity to preside at services and run parishes

Lay people are to be encouraged to take on huge new responsibilities in the Roman Catholic Church, from running parishes to officiating at church services.

Under proposals drawn up by the Diocese of Westminster, the laity will increasingly assume many of the traditional roles of the parish priest as clergy numbers continue to decline.

In the future, full-time lay ministers could live in clergy houses in parishes where the priest is no longer resident and routinely preside at weekday services using pre-consecrated communion hosts. Lay people have often been regarded as secondary to the clergy and the re-organisation of the country’s “mother” diocese, initiated by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, could result in a sea change.

Its sad. When I was in union with Rome, I approaced my vocations office and found thatthere were so many hoops I needed to jump through being in my 30’s I got the impression that priests weren’t really needed.

Maybe before they let lay people administer to the souls they should look at working with those, like me, who may have a little bit of debt and aren’t fresh young highschool boys.

We need more priests. I hear my great orthodox Catholic friends say this all the time. But they never even consider the priesthood themselves! “Oh I REALLY want to get married” or “I don’t think I am called to the priesthood because I like women too much” Excuse me, but am I NOT attracted to women because I am considering becoming a priest? I was a football player in HS and have had many very lovely girlfriends in my day so that is obviously not the case. Its called a SACRIFICE. Young men need to stop complaining and start praying for a vocation in the priesthood. And those who truly don’t have a vocation need to start talking to those who aren’t married about it! Sorry for my little rant. But we do desperately need holy priests. Priests who know about real life and who sacrifice all for the Church. I pray that God allows me to do that.

Dear NuCatholic, you pray and I’ll pray the rosary for you as well - between the both of us getting started it will happen!

I believe that is all ready happening in Australia…

Pray for priests and religious!!!

All the priests in the world will do no good as long as people refuse to Catechize themselves and their children.

OOPS! I forgot we don’t have children anymore. Hmmm, wonder if that has anything to do with the lack of vocations?
