As the Zika virus spreads in Latin America, Catholic leaders are warning women against using contraceptives or having abortions, even as health officials in some countries are advising women not to get pregnant because of the risk of birth defects.

Why would it?

Besides, pro-contraception folks need to ask questions like how often contraception (ie condoms) are removed and if people even know how to use contraception (not that they should as a barrier method) other than a condom.
 
Of course Zika virus wouldn’t affect the Church’s approach towards contraception.
 
Could we organise a little campaign to inform non-Catholics that the Church does not really ‘forbid’ contraception but teaches that contraception is wrong? The Church forbids eating meat on a Friday (in some places) but the Church teaches that contraception is already forbidden.

God-speed! Someone I heard recently, who had a deep change of heart on the issue, said that people don’t want to hear it. This person said they had all the arguments lined up. It is a difficult teaching, especially in instances like this virus. The best witness are people who live it, and concrete aid.

Nevermind that there are also evidence pointing towards a larvicide (Pyriproxyfen - it is applied to water, drinkable water) being the real cause of microcephaly, and not Zika. If that gets proven, it means that we can simply do without the larvicide, and there won’t be new cases of microcephaly…

There isn t any scientifically based relation between larvicide and microcefalia according to Ministry of Health ,Brazil.

There are cases registered in areas where this larvicide isn t used.

There are cases of microcephaly where Zika isn’t present. And I wouldn’t place my bets on anything the Ministry of Health says.

Either way, I said “if”; I am aware nothing is yet proven. Doesn’t hurt to hope for an easier solution, since we haven’t been able to do much about Aedes aegypt (the vector) in over a decade.

Pope Francis: Abortion is not the lesser of two evils. It is a crime. It is to throw someone out in order to save another. That’s what the Mafia does. It is a crime, an absolute evil. On the “lesser evil,” avoiding pregnancy, we are speaking in terms of the conflict between the fifth and sixth commandment. Paul VI, a great man, in a difficult situation in Africa, permitted nuns to use contraceptives in cases of rape.

Don’t confuse the evil of avoiding pregnancy by itself, with abortion. Abortion is not a theological problem, it is a human problem, it is a medical problem. You kill one person to save another, in the best-case scenario. Or to live comfortably, no? It’s against the Hippocratic oaths doctors must take. It is an evil in and of itself, but it is not a religious evil in the beginning, no, it’s a human evil. Then obviously, as with every human evil, each killing is condemned.

On the other hand, avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil. In certain cases, as in this one, such as the one I mentioned of Blessed Paul VI, it was clear. I would also urge doctors to do their utmost to find vaccines against these two mosquitoes that carry this disease. This needs to be worked on.

The key clause is “in certain cases, such as this one, such as the one I mentioned of Blessed Paul VI, it was clear.” Is he saying this one (Zika), and also the other one he mentioned, or does he say “this one”, then clarify that he’s referring to the one where Bl. Paul VI allowed nuns (celibate) to take oral contraception when in danger of rape?

  2. Look for the full texts of what he said.
  3. YES ME TOO, I am so sick of even HAVING to search for the full texts. He NEEDS to stop being so ambiguous. He needs to take a FIRM stand on this stuff.
  4. Dont worry, the Church will NEVER change her teachings. Yes we have had Popes that wanted to(I cant tell if Francis is one) but they never succeeded in changing the Church.
  5. SO if you see “The Pope said this heresy”, don’t even WORRY about it being true or not. Doesn’t matter. Either way, he cannot change the Church, and neither can the media by manipulating his words. Focus on keeping with Church Teaching.
