I think the Catholic bishops should ask Christians to help the poor, and not ask the government, which in recent decades has demonstrated mainly antagonism and scorn for the Christian religion."Governmental budget cuts should not interfere with aid to the world’s poorest people, the U.S. bishops and Catholic Relief Services said in a letter to the House of Representatives."One has to wonder. If a Diocese was running routinely at a deficit, and borrowing routinely to pay for its operations, would the bishops urge it to borrow even more, in order to avoid reducing its contribution to Catholic Relief Services? I just find it difficult tot wrap my mind around the idea that we must keep borrowing in order to spend money that we don’t have, in order to provide charity.
If you ask me for a donation I"m happy to give. If you ask me for a donation but I’m broke, I should borrow the money from someone else to give to you, even though I have no prospects of repaying the loan?
Catechism of the Catholic Church:…those so called Catholics who support unjust wars like Iraq, capital punishment and other life destroying activities. Be consistent.
The Church never considered the iraq war justified, in fact the holy father said not to attack iraq.Catechism of the Catholic Church:
2309 The strict conditions for legitimate defense by military force require rigorous consideration. The gravity of such a decision makes it subject to rigorous conditions of moral legitimacy. …
The evaluation of these conditions for moral legitimacy belongs to the prudential judgment of those who have responsibility for the common good.
2310 Public authorities, in this case, have the right and duty to impose on citizens the obligations necessary for national defense.
Those who are sworn to serve their country in the armed forces are servants of the security and freedom of nations. If they carry out their duty honorably, they truly contribute to the common good of the nation and the maintenance of peace.
