New York City, N.Y., Aug 6, 2010 / 11:24 am (CNA).- The Catholic League responded to the recent statement of author Anne Rice, who in 2008 announced that she had returned to the Catholic faith, but now says she is no longer a Christian but remains “committed to Christ.”

Full article…

’ …no longer a Christian but remains “committed to Christ.” ’

And what exactly is that supposed to mean??? Sounds like more lefty-squishy gobbldegook, like the other popular weasel-out “I’m spiritual but not religious.”

You hear that a lot.

I just finished the third book in Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein series. The sad part is, in real life there are no ‘replicants,’ but plenty of people who are eager and willing to turn the world on its ear and reject God.

I’m not defending the position, just trying to answer the above question.

I think it means that she is unwilling or unable to accept the full message of Christ’s gospel and rather than throw all of it overboard, she is willing to live at least the parts she can accept. How is this, essentially, any different than the many Christian sects whom we consider brothers and sisters in faith while believing they do not share in the fullness of it?

Rice’s remarks about not wanting to inhibit choice on the part of others only demonstrates a fundamentally flawed idea of what truth or morality is. A person who understands what they are would have answered Ms Behar’s question with two questions back at her:
  1. Joey, do you think slavery is wrong?
  2. Do you feel you have the right to impose your will over one who believes they have a choice in the matter?
But that’s not going to happen on a show that is essentially a bunch of women gossiping on a sofa.

I remember seeing Annie Rice on Charlie Rose talking about her return to the Church and the promotion of her first book on the life of Christ. I found the interview compelling and decided to email her - I was surprised when I got a lengthy, thoughtful response. We ended up corresponding over several weeks (I had just reconciled with the church, myself) and I was surprised to hear how sincere and well-thought out her decision to recommit to the Church appeared to be.

Indeed, as disappointing as it is for some people, that Anne has decided to leave Christianity, I doubt she is doing so on a whim. I will continue to pray for her and I hope her relationship with Christ continues and that perhaps someday she will find peace with the Church. In addition, I do not find Donahue’s negative assessment of Anne’s spiritual state to be helpful or accurate - on the contrary, I think his statement is tragic because it is precisely this type of negativity that drives people away from the Church.

Her last straw - gay marriage. But the 4th Commandment is “Honor thy father and mother.” It is NOT ‘honor thy father and father.’

We see a mother siding with her gay son. We saw Adam side with Eve; that did not work out so well for the rest of us. Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son in complete obedience to God. God rewarded Abraham greatly for his complete trust and love.

We see a woman wanting Christ on her terms, not HIS terms. A woman wanting her version of Christ but NOT Christ Himself in Holy Communion. Wanting THIS world to go HER way, not the way of Christ in the Church HE established and enpowered to speak for HIM with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Each of us has the power to block out Christ. Those who do generally find fault with Christ and HIS CHURCH. He just doesn’t fit into their world.

Perhaps future events may motivate her to return yet again. We can pray for her and for those she may be causing to doubt their Faith too.

Gay marriage is dumb. It’d be much funner to be with a woman.

“I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat,” she continued, also characterizing Christianity as “anti-science” and “anti-life.”–Anne Rice

She is not so different from many Catholics on the left of the political spectrum. Faithfulness to the Church cannot overcome their commitment to artificial contraception, feminism, abortion, and gay rights. Those things are the new orthodoxy.

Fortunately right and wrong are not determined by polls or votes. These things will never be orthodox despite the numbers of people who wish they were.
