The Catholic League has it incorrect.
The Catholic League has issued a stinging press release pointing out that the mainstream media has perpetuated “the myth that there has been a ‘pedophilia’ crisis in the Catholic Church.” The release concluded, “The fact is that we’ve had a homosexual crisis in the priesthood all along.”
They are inferring that Homosexuality= pedophilia which is incorrect. There is no correlation between the two. Even in abuse cases it is not a hard fast rule. Sexual abuse and same-gender relationships are two different things.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.

Every single abusing priest ‘agreed to remain chaste and celibate’.

We already know how that turned out.😊

This is very dangerous ground which is why the bishops have been so slow to take a public response to the findings of the John Jay report. It would be VERY easy for church leaders and conservative catholics to take a scapegoating approach here and blame the entire fiasco on “the gays.” This would be horrendous, because the truth is FAR more nuanced and subtle than a simple scapegoat sound bite.

On the other hand, the League has a very good point. New Ulm, get yourself a dictionary and read the definition of pedophilia. It is specifically the molestation of a young child, pre-puberty. The definition of the word simply does not apply to molestation of a 13 year old by an adult man. Look at the statistics! Pedophilia is not sex-specific as the abusers consider their victims somewhat androgenously. In true pedophilia, the victims would not have been 81% pubescent boys!

What happened is mostly more aptly described as a “pederasty.” Its an old and unpleasant reality in human nature, and it DOES have homosexual implications. But beware the scapegoat. None of this lets the bishops off the hook for their appalling judgement in transferring perpetrators, nor does this imply that if we just had a nice witchhunt and drummed out all the gays, the rectories would become a safe place to let our kids stay.

Instead, the bishops have some soul searching to do on how to respond. The Vatican directive against ordaining those with deap seated SSA is an incomplete step. We as a church need to change how we perceive and treat those with SSA’s. Did these priests REALLY get ordained in order to have lots of opportunity? Or did they not understand their feelings, hide them out of shame, seek the priesthood as an attempt to be right with God and not have to live singly among whispers, and then eventually succumb to temptations that they could never admit to a spiritual director and get help for before those temptations putresced into abusive behavior? We as a church need to do more to make guys like goofyjim (SSA but committed to chastity) feel welcome, normal parts of our catholic community without having to be secretive about their condition. We don’t ostracise recovering alcoholics for their struggles, why is SSA so different?

A lot of the abuse that was perpetrated in the mid 20th century occurred at a time when priests didn’t have much contact with little girls. Unlike the altar servers, we didn’t spend any time alone with the parish priest, so abuse of mainly males was probably in large part due to opportunity. In cases of abuse where the priest had access to both boys and girls (cases in my community) both were abused equally.

I’ve always thought that priests who’d gone away to minor seminary and such at a very young age had never had to mature in their sexuality so in many ways were still at the same age level as the young adolescents they had as altar servers.

A pedophile is someone who has sex with a child under puberty. 80% of the molestation of boys that took place were on boys that were older but under the age of consent, making this cases of statuatory homosexual rape. All male homosexuals are not rapist but all male men that molest male children ARE homosexual. Why would you want to put someone with homosexual tendencies in such a position?🤷

There was almost no pediophilia involved . Over 90% of the molestations were homosexual rape of post pubescent boys. The Catholic league has it right.

As one who attended a minor seminary and is the Father of two girls and is sexaully mature, thank you very much. I can confidently assure you that what you said is a load of ****.

There were very few girls molested because the molestations were almost exclusively homoexual rape. Homosexual have no intetrest in girls regardless of their age.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Great in theory, but they didn’t remain chaste. This spoils it for those who would to be and makes bitter tea for those now serving who have SSA and are chaste.

But these guys never made a career out of their sexual preferences, so perhaps they do not feel singled out. If they are living chastely, who would know?

Turning good men with SSA away from seminary is just a practical consequence of the precedent that has been so painfully set. A lot needs to settle out before a clear policy can be set in stone.

A good read - Goodbye, Good Men: How Liberals Brought Corruption Into the Catholic Church

How did the American Catholic priesthood go from an image of wise, strong men like Spencer Tracy in Boys Town and Bing Crosby in Going My Way to an image of “pedophile priests”?
In Goodbye, Good Men, investigative reporter Michael S. Rose provides the shocking answer that the mainstream news media have missed.
He uncovers how radical liberalism, like that found on many college campuses, has infiltrated the Catholic Church and tried to overthrow her traditional beliefs, standards, and disciplines - especially Church teachings on sexuality. In bringing the “sexual revolution” into the Church, liberals have welcomed - and even preferred - radicalized active homosexuals to orthodox seminarians in the name of “diversity” and “tolerance.” That “tolerance” has now been exposed as a toleration of criminal acts.
Here, in stunning detail, is the story behind the headlines - the story that made those very headlines possible. As Dr. Alice von Hildebrand says, Goodbye, Good Men “holds the key to a phenomenon which, to many, is also an enigma: Why are so many seminaries empty? Michael S. Rose has the courage - a courage that many Church leaders lack - to give us the fearful but uncontestable answer: because vice has penetrated into many of them, and those who do not condone vice are excluded.”
A riveting work of extraordinary reporting, Goodbye, Good Men shows how the very institutions charged with inculcating Catholic theology and discipline have come to prefer gay priests to straight ones, pop psychology to religious devotions, and Playboy to the pope.

Goodbye! Good Catholics

Turning men with SSA away from seminary is not only another consequence of an earlier precedent. There is also good theological reason for barring men with SSA. A priest who promises/vows to live a celibate and chaste life is supposed to be doing so in order to conform more fully to Christ the Victim, to make his life a sacrifice for the sake of the faithful.

As Christ remained celibate and chaste throughout his life because He is the Bridegroom of the Church, so does the priest in order to mirror our Lord’s life more closely, because by being ordained to the priesthood, the entire Church becomes his true spouse.

Furthermore, it is hard to see how a homosexual is making a significant sacrifice by agreeing to abstain from an activity (marriage and sexual intercourse with a woman) that he most likely would not engage in anyway if he remained a layman.

Also remember a priest makes vows - to be faithful to the Magisterium. He must not advance the homosexual agenda in anyway. If he cannot promise to do so, then he cannot serve Christ faithfully.

If we’re looking for guarantees of chastity we’ll just have to give up on the priesthood completely. We had one priest in our parish sent back to his country for having not one but two mistresses – all was ok until they found out about each other.

At the moment we have a gay pastor. Most parishioners don’t know but it’s well known in his community since he announced it. I couldn’t care less what his inclinations are as long as he doesn’t act on them.

I’m sorry to have offended you but you, as the father of two, have obviously not put your sexuality on the back burner at the age of 13 and never revisited it.

Girls and women are/were molested but it doesn’t seem to have the same media fascination.

81% of the abused were male. I’ve noted no media attention that fails to account for the abused females.

Are you implying that due to ‘lack of access’ to girls that boys were abused for ‘being readily available’?

Nor did ANY of the 200 or so fine, devout, young men who were in the seminary with me and not one who has molested a child.
Girls and women are/were molested but it doesn’t seem to have the same media fascination.
Almost NO girls and women were molested. It was amost exlusively homosexual rape.

With all due respect to Mr. Donahue and the Catholic League the truth lies somewhere in the middle. This cases continue to turn up on a regular basis. To deny that some not all seminaries were hotbeds, excuse the pun, of homosexual activity is just naive. These pedophile priests, mostly homosexuals, are still out there. Despite the Bishops efforts to be politically correct this is a homosexual problem within the Church.

It will do no good to blame the media and hide our heads in the sand.

AJC 😦

They don’t infer. They imply. You infer, and you inferred something they didn’t imply.
There is no correlation between the two. Even in abuse cases it is not a hard fast rule. Sexual abuse and same-gender relationships are two different things.
There is a strong correlation between male homosexuality and male-on-male sexual abuse of minors. Roughly three-quarters of pedophiles self-identify as either homosexual or bisexual, and a pedophile’s victim gender generally corresponds to his sexual orientation.
