The Catholic League has its place but the NOR has done exposes in Donohue’s salary, how he/the League has soft-peddaled the minor sex abuse scandal and such. The organization is “bought” in its own way IMO. It seems to not be gaining a lot of memebers - they are launching an internet effort to try to get folks to join. So that probably says it all.
What is the NOR?

New Oxford Review?

So Donahue isn’t perfect. He defends the Faith. He’s from New York and isn’t afraid to get in someone face and tell that person off. I like his attitude. He is no shrinking violet.

Any thoughts, comments, I’m all ears, in this case eyes 🙂 👍
I’ve seen Mr. Donohue on TV as well seen his website.

He does make some good points, but a lot of it seems to be picking a nit and being offended for the sake of being offended.

I don’t think that there is really any true discrimination against Catholics in the United States, and things like jokes can and probably should be ignored. I spent my whole life as a Polish American, so I think I know a little of ethnic humor and taking it in good humor. I could have spent my whole life angry, but that’s really not productive. Donohue is looking for things, just doesn’t want to let things go, which is often (not always) the best policy.

You can count on Bill Donahue to be on the front line at any time to defend the Catholic Church. He has a knack to turn the tables on the offenders. Two particular cases stand out in my mind. A year back before Christmas, someone in Wal Mart’s management decided upon himself to announce to the world that the origin of Christmas is pagan. Mr. Donahue pursued the matter. He threatened a boycot of WalMart and told them they he will mobilize some other 70 or so christian organizations from buying at the store. First WalMart did not back down and actually opined that they agreed what has been claimed about Christmas. At the last minute, however, the store decided to retract the story and apoligized, and the writer of the offending piece was fired.

And just before Lent it was the case of the totally naked, chocolate crucified image of Jesus (genitals exposed.) It was going to be exhibit in a store window (I believe) in a very heavily travelled location of pedestrians. Initially, the artist tried to defend his intentions as something he did for the love of Christ. But Mr. Donahue went after the sponsors of this offending piece of art. Results: apologies - no exhibit.

I support the Catholic League on a regular basis. Their publication the Catalyst recounts many stories of Catholics who, because of their beliefs, have been attacked or have been discriminated at their place of work, for instance, and other stories of injustice happening to Catholics that Mr. Donahue tackled and and matters were settled with satisfactory results.

I find Mr. Donahue tenacious and courageous. He does more than just talk and write OP-editorials. It is easy to criticize him, but he is the one who actually enters the battle. We should have more like him.

NOR has also done “exposes” on Pope John Paul II, EWTN, Mother Angelica, Karl Keating and many of our Bishops. I take their opinions with a grain of salt.

Bill Donohue rocks. He doesn’t go looking for the attacks on the Church - they come right to him because they are everywhere. Madonna hanging on a cross? The Davinci Code? The two lovely gals who were working for John Edwards? The Madonna with the cow dung stains? Comon, the list is endless. The man has his devoutly Catholic hands full and I am fully in support.

Generally I like the Catholic League but I can’t help but wonder why they were conspicuously silent when Sean Hannity attacked Father Euteneuer.

Did you ask the Catholic League why they had no defense of Father Euteneur? Do you know for a certainty that they did not?

And for the poster that does not believe that there are vestiges of anti-catholic bias alive and well in America…when did it end?

Was it not an anti catholic bigotry in 1998 when the Clackamas Community College displayed a work of “art” called "Two Popes Boinking" that was a depiction of two gay men engaging in intercourse while wearing Bishops Mitres? This was paid for with tax dollars…

When I objected and notified the college that I would no longer send my employees to the college for CAD drafting training, the president actually tried to tell me that it was “unfair to punish the engineering department for an art exhibit sponsored by the college.”

He had no answer when I asked him why this type of ‘art’ was only exhibited in publicly funded exhibitions? Why is this type of art not exhibited at the expense of private citizens or corporations but only when the cost is born by the americn taxpayer? I informed him that no corporation or private individual wants to suffer the econimic repercussions of the hate speech that artist was displaying. You would never see this piece displayed in a bank for instance, yet I have seen art in banks…the bank would nnot want to loose the depositors…

Maybe they pick and choose targets - which is why I question their veracity and would never belong.

I had sent them an E-Mail asking them about why they were quiet. I regularly check on their website and it had NOTHING.

Yes it is true that they do a lot of good but they should have been at the fore front defending Father Euteneuer from Sean Hannity’s viciousness.

I don’t think this is a fair criticism. It’s reasonable to argue whether it was appropriate to feature or not feature a particular story, but any organization must pick and choose its targets. This is particularly true of an organization like the Catholic League, whose primary purpose is to get news coverage. If the League released reams of press releases every day ranting about the smallest trifles (“Joe McDonald of Carson City threw a cigarette out his window as he drove past St. Teresa’s on Saturday - I and all true Catholics are outraged!” said Bill Donohue), they would be routinely ignored.

That is actually my main concern about the group - they don’t pick and choose their targets enough. Bill Donohue has become the Catholic Al Sharpton by complaining about all manner of less significant issues, with the result in my opinion that he and the League are less credible when they complain about real problems. I’m not sure if this is simply due to Donohue’s personality, or if he is responding to donors, who don’t want to have their local pet issue overlooked, even if it shouldn’t merit the national attention of the Catholic League.

True, Bill goes off on every little thing, no matter how small often just for air time. This has gone so far that he was even parodied on an recent Easter episode of South Park becoming the next Pope.

I disagree wholeheartedly. I heard Bill Donahue speaking out against the Bishops who covered up the sex scandal, several times, including on the Don Imus show. He doesn’t pull punches when he sees something wrong, whether its the Church or not.

Perfect or not the Catholic Church NEEDS someone like Bill Donahue, especially now! The attacks in case anyone has failed to notice increase in intensity as time goes on. I certainly don’t see them letting up anytime soon! Personally, I can’t imagine the assaults he deals with constantly.:banghead: He is definitely in the thick of the “war zone.” I myself think he is doing a super job! Pray for him. Pray for the Catholic League.

Well, there are attacks and precieved attacks. Much of what I see from Donahue goes after precieved attacks, which reduces his, the Leagues, and the Churches credibility by going after every little thing no matter how trivial.

Trivial to you might be a serious affront to another catholic:confused:

I think most of the incidents to which the Catholic League responds to is at the request of catholics where the affront takes place…Someone calls [emails, writes, phones…] Bill Donohue and asks for the Catholic Leagues assistance and clout…

It is not like the Catholic League is sponsoring its own version of the NSA Spy Program…

i was a little dubious about the Catholic League at first, but i’ve come around to thinking that they do not have an agenda and are sincerely committed to pointing out the double standard that allows for catholicism to be mocked and other religions to be respected.

right now the leading press release on their website is about the minuteman organization harrassing catholics in san diego because of the bishops’ pro-illegal immigrant stance. so it seems they don’t discriminate between catholic bashers on the “right” and catholic bashers on the “left”. (today there are many more on the left which may be why there League appears to be a right-wing outfit at times.)

The Catholic League is a fantastic organization and if we all were like Mr. Donohue people like Robin Williams and Jay Leno wouldn’t be so likely to attack our faith on a seemingly daily basis. I look at the CL’s website daily to see which celebrity, university, or local government has decide to attack the Catholic church and/or the priesthood.

I am not a member of the CL (not yet anyway) but I think we should pay very close attention to what is published on that site. The Catholic church is under a brutal attack in the US, and we shouldnt’ just sit by and let it happen.

Or so I think, anyway.
