I have never in over forty years ever seen anything contrary to Catholic faith and morals, scandalous, or unsuitable for readers of any age in Field & Stream.

You sound like their ad copy! The New Oxford Review is still very active, but the web site is outdated as to their current magazine available on line. However, this monthly magazine, created by former Episcopalians, is hard hitting, yet loyal to the Church. They never sugar coat the post Vatican II disaster we have been living through for almost 40 years. They call it as they see it.
Give it a try. I think you’ll be hooked.
I find them doctrinally okay too but seems like they emphasize the negative. You sound like their ad copy!
I’ve tried reading NOR a few times… they seem theologically/philosophically sound but the main thing that struck me about the whole publication was a noticeably uncharitable attitude. You can be “hard-hitting” and not “sugar coat” without being rude. Reading that rag just bums me out. It’s a shame.
Does anyone have an opinion of America (magazine)?
Just add “Commonweal” to this list with “America” and “National Catholic Reporter”, and you have the trifecta of dissident “Catholic” magazines.National Catholic Reporter:thumbsup:![]()
I’ve never read US Catholic so I can’t tell you that, but I get an online subscription to *America *and I really enjoy it. I’ve never had any issues with it at all. I think it’s a “smart” magazine for lack of better word. It doesn’t shy away from covering controversial issues, there are not always subjects covered that are of interest to me, but most of the time I find it quite engaging and interesting. Also, I wouldn’t call it unorthodox by any means. Maybe its spin on things is a bit more pragmatic and tries to stay more unbiased than take one side or another.St. Anthony Messenger is somewhat close to what you describe.
Out of curiosity, how orthodox is America? Is it about of the same alignment as U.S. Catholic?
I have read many of the Catholic magazines over the years. However, I have gotten out of the habit so I hope the ones I mention are still in circulation. I suggest “The Liguorian” (sp.?), “Catholic Digest,” or “U.S. Catholic.”What Catholic magazine can I get that has the orthodoxy of National Catholic Register while having the compassion and pastoral leaning of America? How is the new Catholic Answer (at least I think it’s new)?
I cannot speak to recommendations for, but although I was educated by Jesuits, I would suggest giving them a few more years before subscribing to their magazines. They are pretty liberal, at least they were. They may have changed. As to subscribing to that liberal rag the Reporter, don’t waste your money. It is supporting Satan, imo. They routinely run articles praising women’s “ordination”, and always cover when such a farce occurs. The Register is good. Maybe call the Register, and ask where you can find a copy of their magazine (they should have a list of distributors), and find out if you like it.Hello,
I am looking to subscribe to a couple of Catholic periodicals, though I really am quite unsure in which direction I should go. I would love some suggestions, perhaps based on what some of you are reading on a weekly/monthly basis?
I hear that the National Catholic Register is conservative whereas the National Catholic Reporter is liberal. Should I subscribe to both in order to get the fullest picture?
A group of Jesuits publish a periodical called America which appears to be decent, but I’ll admit that, sadly, I don’t always trust what Jesuits have to say anymore. So many of them are like Fr. John Dear who support women’s ordination, homosexual unions, contraception, married priests, etc. Perhaps this periodical is a breath of fresh air?
Your recommendations are much appreciated.
Perhaps because you can take a magazine everywhere. You aren’t required to be sitting at your computer. And some people (such as me) find it difficult to read lengthy articles on a monitor - paper is much easier. It makes me wonder why anyone would choose to subscribe to either of these??
