Hello…
I didnt read all the posts and I am just jumping to reply that for those of you interested…there is a Catholic mens group that started up about 4 years ago called Kings Men and since then they have been known to have closed down several porn shops…
Because you may not know it but to sell anything pornographic or like it is illegal!
The problem is that it is just not enforced so if you really want to do something then get a bunch of people together and do something about it!

Maybe my mind works differently, but if I found my wife masturbating with dirty images I would see that more as an opportunity to fill in rather than being disturbed by it.
…

As to it being sinful, I agree, but most of the men I know would NOT be offended by it. Maybe it is the culture, maybe it is something inherent in men, etc. I think what you fail to understand is that MOST of the wives, as reported to me by my friends, do NOT satisfy their man as much as he would like. They get the “I’m too tired, I was with kids all day, etc.” line. This means that he is getting rejected by his wife. This leads to temptations to use alternate forms of gratification.
  1. I think it is disgusting that a husband should be aroused by his wife looking at dirty picture of other men. It is yet another proof - if we need any - of the damage that pornography has done to our culture.
  2. Many women too complain about their husbands not satisfying them as much as they would like. Women crave healthy sexual intimacy. Their sex drive is different, not lower… Sometimes a woman just has some kind of emotional needs that her husband is ignoring, so she feels rejected and distant.

I agree 100%, but would add that the damage is done by porn and the spread of contraception and the contraceptive mentality.

You make a good point. I think our culture has created a rift between the sexes like never before and we need to seek better understanding.

While I agree with your reasoning, a wife being unavailable for sex or not “allowing” it is not a just reason to commit mortal sin.
I agree with you, there is never a valid excuse to commit a sin. If the wife denies sex without justification, then she sins whether or not the husband views porn. Likewise the husband sins by viewing porn whether his wife denies sex or not. That being said one spouse’s actions or in-actions could make the others task of avoiding sin more challenging, although it does not justify falling into sin.

I think that watching porn and/or masturbating is cheating. I think it is something, probably not unlike cigarrettes, that most men (and women) start not realizing the long term consequences of the action. A lot of guys start in high school, some younger, and don’t even think about the effects it will have on their marriages. It is not an easy thing to overcome and it can creep its way back into marriages decades down the road, I’m sure.

As for men not getting enough affection from their wife, I’m not married so I can’t speak to that. However, I can only imagine how devastating it would be for a marriage to find out your husband or wife has been looking lustfully at another woman or man and finding sexual pleasure and gratification from that person. Someone they don’t even know!!

Anytime my friends bring up porn, I try to ask them how they would feel about men watching their sisters in bed with another man engaging in all types of XXX rated acts. They are almost all violently opposed. Guess what, those women (and men) in those movies and pictures are someones daughter, sister, future mother, future wife, etc.

It is simply a devastating and horrible thing anyway you look at it. And if studies are accurate, I don’t even think people get as much satisfaction from porn and masturbation as they think they do. The one that always got me was that married people watching porn tended to have a more negative view of their sex life than married people who didn’t.

So let me get this straight: my sex life is bad. I think I will look at porn. Porn gives me a negative view of my sex life because my wife can now never live up to my porn driven fantasies. Therefore, my sex life is bad. I will make up for it with more porn. And the cycle repeats itself.

Let’s pray for an end to this industry and pray for help to those people caught in the grips of the addiction.
Hi Josh,

I think that once you are married (if you get married) you will be able to see this from a different point of view. Since you are not married and not in a sexual relationship with someone, you do not yet have the lfie experience necessary to relate to a man who is in such a relationship.

This is not meant to justify the behaviour you mentioned, but you just don’t have the necessary experience to relate to the temptations that can arise in these types of situations.

It is like having an opinion about the taste of food without ever having tried it. I am beginning to see a common theme in the discourse of this thread. Most of the presumably female posters are very upset by the thought of finding/catching their spouse looking at porn masturbating and most of the men are less upset by it. This does not mean we all are not opposed to it.

I think, as stated above, we are starting to talk past each other.

Exactly. I think many men KNOW what they are doing is wrong, they don’t WANT to do it, but they do it anyway. I would venture a guess that some do it as a reaction to the rejection.

I would think that MOST married men would prefer to be with their spouse and NOT turn toward porn/masturbation.

One of the key things to avoid or break a porn addiction is to avoid occasions of temptation. When your spouse denies relations (without justification) for extended period of time, they become a source of temptation that cannot be avoided. Once porn becomes involved it makes everything 100 times worse and drives them even father apart.

That being said people develop porn problems for many different reasons, not only because of a lack of relations with their spouse.

What’s ridiculous about “if arousal were difficult to attain, sex and reproduction would in many cases become impossible”? Men cannot have sex if they are not aroused. Without chemical interference, such as Viagra, at least. It’s patently obvious.

And I said that, “most women aren’t that good looking,” because most people aren’t perfect, and physical beauty objectively wanes as people get older. Perfectly good looking men and women are only so for a few years of their lives. But it doesn’t matter. Nature has allowed a subjective and psychological element, and they can still be perfect in their partner’s eyes.

Why? Women often fret over minor imperfections like putting on a few pounds, and most guys don’t care and still see them for their beauty. Would it be better if that weren’t the case? Would it be better if it were only the photoshopped women presented in the media that were somehow good enough? That was the alternative scenario I was presenting. So what’s the problem?
The reason I find your attitude absolutely disgusting is you seem to think sex is based on looks and nothing else. God gave us the gift of love making in order for married people to express how much they care about the other which has nothing to do with physical appearance. A boy may need arousal but a man uderstands what God intended.

Think about it another way, if arousal weren’t extremely easy our ancestors would have never made it out of the last ice age. Everybody back then was all covered in hair and had really bad teeth. On top of that, we hadn’t invented candles, soap, or beer yet and we spent our days half starving and trying to fend off giant ground sloths.

Again, here’s a similar poll:

There is a priest (exorcist) and a lay charisnatic person in our parish who talk about pornography and demonology. The porn industry is infested by the evil spirits of: lust, pride, oppression, addiction etcetc. You are not only watching porn, you actually engaging in demonic activity. You don’t just simply turn away fom that, you need serious rpentanxe nd contrition and prayers of deliverance. Many men keep falling back because they are unable to ompletely break off the bond with the evil one that they form while engaging in pornography.

What about that:we’ve had 7 kids in 9 years-not to mention miscarriages,I never said no to my husband, and find it as hard as my husband to do abstinence when we have to(mainly after a birth until my periods return for the last babies because I always got pregnant while breastfeeding=high fertility).
During those times I am very tempted by my husband’s body,I do not allow myself to use abstinence as an excuse to give in to temptation and satisfy myself by looking at other men.Not only it would make me go to hell, but it would destroy our -I thought beautiful-relationship.I love him.
Remember we both agree to abstinence sometimes because it is necessary .
I think it is overused an excuse to sin.And actually I found out: my husband said that it is not in abstinence that it’s the hardest to resist. It is when he is stressed out.
I know it became a sickness and I forgive him,but I still have a hard time with the fact that he allowed himself to do something that became a sickness-I am also stressed(homeschooling as well ),I know what stress is like and I don’t think it’s a legitimate way to cope at all.

What I’m about to say may have a very negative reaction, but I can’t help but think part of the problem is that we like to think that men and women think alike when it comes to sex and sexuality.

We don’t.

I spoke with many of my co-workers on this subject after the topic came up, and here’s what they told me. They were not trying to be crass, or cute, they were being honest.

Basically it goes like this:

Woman says: “That man is very nice looking”

What she’s thinking: “That man is very nice looking”

Man says “that woman is very nice looking”

What he’s thinking: “Yep, I’d have sex with her”

Each of them stated that they wouldn’t pursue these thoughts, but in their mind that’s how they think.

We have to stop trying to put men and woman into little boxes and acting like we think the same way, because we don’t. It’s the same reason why when you’re giving your husband the run down on the honey-do list, he only hears 20% of what your saying. In his mind he hears blah blah blah, trash, blah blah blah, garage floor, blah blah blah, mow the lawn, blah blah blah… and responds, ‘yes dear’… 😉

The same goes for masturbation. Most men don’t think it’s a problem like woman do.
It has nothing to do with your body, nothing to do with your new hair cut, nothing to do with the fact that you didn’t wear make-up today, or forgot to shave, or because they harbor ill will towards your aunt sally, or hate your best friend, or because you didn’t wear the right clothes today.
They are just thinking “I was stressed, I felt ‘pent-up’ so I took care of it, end of story, now where’s the remote because Sports Center is on”…

I think Zoey is quite right here in terms of the mentality of a large percentage of men. And in fact, I don’t think there is anything wrong with the mentality when it comes to how men perceive attractive women. We’re wired differently. Our first question as to a woman walking down the street is pretty much a “yes or no” as far as sex with her goes.

But that question is a subconscious one really. What we’re called to do as Catholics is allow that fleeting moment to pass and move on. Not dwell on it. It becomes a problem when we dwell on it. It’s also a problem to obsess over the fleeting moment but that’s a much rarer issue so I won’t spend time on it.

Women just don’t react the same way to the physical form as men do. Women pick up on other cues like social status or potential wealth because they are geared towards determining the security and strength of a man. Sure, physical strength matters to defend a woman against physical threats, but security in terms of providing food and shelter for her and the children is even more important, especially in our modern world.

So to the crux of the matter, I daresay that the vast majority of men and even good Catholic men have seen pornography in their lives. There’s just so much of it and in so many forms of media. And I also should note that anxiety levels in men are climbing to rates higher than ever seen before… with a declining number of outlets because physically demanding jobs are falling. In the past, men’s anxiety levels and pent up aggression were beaten down by labors in the fields or the coal mines or construction work. Now? Not so much. And to go and seek out other, more nefarious outlets, required action as opposed to the passivity of the Internet.

So you’ve got a saturation of porn coupled with an employment market and a Western society where men’s physical strength is being devalued. That’s a recipe for problems like this.

I’m not excusing it. I’m explaining it. Because it’s also our job as good Catholic men to resist the ills of the world and cling to Christ and St. Joseph’s examples of how to be good husbands and fathers. Christ was the perfect husband to His bride, the Church, and St. Joseph’s example is even more clear. So good Catholic women, support us in that endeavor! We need you more than ever!

Your are right it is absolutely no excuse to sin. Although there has been discussion of various factors that might explain but not excuse why some men fall into this, nobody is saying that you did anything wrong that led to your husband falling into this.

It seems like you are trying to understand why your husband will do this. In a way this is a fruitless pursuit, because there simple is no justification for offending God through sin. Yes you have been greatly hurt and offended by this sin, but more significantly God has been offended. Your husband soul was in great danger, you discovering this, your pain and suffering may help to save his soul. He may not have been able to stop with out realizing the pain he has caused you. Consider this, God may have used you to save your husband. Your husband, assuming he has stopped, will start to become a better man.

Again there is no excuse, but another thing to consider (from the perspective of attempting to understand this) is that although women do fall into porn viewing, it is an attack unevenly targeted at men. It is an attack on your whole family that is directed at the man. You may not be capable of achieving the same level of temptation as your husband just as there are temptations in other areas for you that your husband may never experience.

I find those points to be quiet salient whm. I would hope any men here, even those who are guilty of past sins or are currently struggling with the issue, would be well… man enough to say that there is no excuse but there is an explanation as to why it’s so prevalent and so difficult to overcome.

Especially given the leaps and bounds the Internet has made in allowing for the promotion of pornography. Sure, magazines and even videos have been around for decades. But you had to go out of your way to acquire them. For the man struggling with sin, there were plenty of opportunities to stop himself. Now? It’s a click away and sometimes even an inadvertent click. And given how ingrained and ever-present the sexual instinct is in men, it’s no wonder why there is such a battle even in men who love their wives and families to death.

ZoeyBdo:
Man says “that woman is very nice looking”

What he’s thinking: “Yep, I’d have sex with her”
Well, there is some truth in that, but that is because by default, beautiful women are sexually attractive to men. So if a woman is beautiful, she is going to be sexually attractive. I wouldn’t say men necessarily think in those terms, though, but some do.

In women, it seems that there have to be several factors, such as physical attractiveness, psychological predisposition, social status, that make a man sexually desirable. Therefore, even if a guy is physically attractive, but doesn’t necessarily meet other criteria, he may not be sexually attractive to a woman. And so a good looking guy isn’t automatically a guy a woman would be disposed to have sex with. He needs to be a good looking guy with resources, who is willing to make a commitment.

In men, physical attractiveness by default makes a woman sexually attractive, and psychology and personality and other factors may either reinforce the attractiveness or ruin it completely and make a woman unattractive, despite her physical beauty. But if nothing else is known about a woman apart from her looks, then the other factors are assumed and physical beauty alone is what determines her sexual attractiveness.

This makes pretty good sense from a natural perspective, because a woman has to carry a child for 9 months and give birth, so she not only wants good genetic material for her children (physical attractiveness), but a man who will help provide her with the resources needed to raise them and who has the psychological dispositions to form an emotional commitment, so just being good looking usually is not enough to make a man sexually attractive to a woman.

Men don’t have to worry about the other factors, and so they are interested primarily in good genetic material, but will be turned off from forming emotional attachments (and therefore long term relationships) with women they perceive as easy or slutty, because it makes no sense investing time, energy and resources into a family where the wife is adulterous and where the children may not be his. Women have a guarantee that their children are theirs; men don’t. So in a long term commitment, physical fidelity is an extremely important factor in a man’s mind, almost to the exclusion of all others. And it is physical attractiveness as opposed to social status and material resources that is important, so the male sex drive is a simplified version of the female one.

This goes some way to explain why women may consider both emotional affairs (that are not sexual in nature) and physical affairs (which often involve emotional infidelity too) as very painful betrayals, as they may threaten a man’s commitment to her, whereas for men, emotional affairs are not so much on the radar, but it is a physical affair that is a very painful betrayal, as it turns his emotional commitment and investment of energies into a lie.

So, in the hypothetical scenario of a man catching his wife masturbating to pornography, he’d be less likely to feel that her physical fidelity is threatened, and so he would likely consider it as something minor compared to a literal, physical affair.

In the reverse scenario, a woman may subconsciously feel that her husband’s emotional fidelity is being undermined, and therefore there is a painful betrayal from her perspective. But men find that very difficult to see, as in men’s minds, only physical fidelity is relevant and we’re not innately aware of other factors, so we find it hard to understand the sense of betrayal that a woman may feel in this situation. We aren’t wired to see that as betrayal, but if we were, I don’t think that this whole issue would be the problem that it is.

Wow! That should be in a book. You just summed 100’s of books on this topic in just a few paragraphs. This should be REQUIRED reading for every married couple. It clearly explains this topic in words that both men and women can easily understand.

Bravo!

When I talk about being tempted as a woman and a wife,I am tempted on the sexual level for sure when there is abstinence(thoughts, have a look at porn that sounds so good, masturbation…) and it’s hard but out of love and faithfulness I won’t do it+fear of hell.
When there is no abstinence but I meet a man with a lot of charisma my temptations would be in the line of thinking I want to be in his arms or to look at him to feel thatfeeling you get when you fall in love and stuff like that:not really sexual but definitely leading up to it for a woman.Well again I don’t want it and reject it and don’t look at that man.

Interesting, knowing my wife felt that way about another man, would really bother me on a emotional level. That is more than just seeking sexual pleasure, it is rejection of the spouse and wishing one they were married to somebody else. Perhaps that is why women are so hurt by men looking at porn, because they view it as not only getting pleasure from another woman but as the man wanting to replace them with the woman in the pictures, that the man wants to be in love with that other person.

Very insightful, thanks.
