I have heard a lot of talk about how there is a need to make religious music relevant to young people. I have also seen a lot of posts where people who are heavy metal fans :knight1: question whether they should be listening to some bands because of the questionable lyrics.

Well, I ran across this Playlist on Youtube for Catholic Metal Bands:
youtube.com/playlist?list=PL72EEE4A678EC4BA1

I listened to a few of them and found nothing theologically problematic. In fact, their style of music reflects a spiritually passionate kind of Catholic Christianity. They might even be more effective in expressing some of the more difficult concepts of the Faith, like the suffering of Christ, the Dolours of the Blessed Virgin, and the idea of a sacrificial life. No superficial treatment of spiritual themes here.

Anyway, listen to some of the songs and see what you think.

One I like is Veronica by Katholicus

I just realized my username would make a great metal band name.

^ it would lol.

I know they aren’t Catholic, but they are Protestant, you guys listen to Theocracy?

Katholicus is by far my favorite , they remind me of Metalicca but Catholic 😃

Metatrone and Illuminandi are good Catholic bands. There’s a band called Miseration that might have a Catholic in it: their first album Your Demons - Their Angels has some very pro-Catholic sounding themes to it. There’s also Crimson Moonlight, who MAY be Catholic. They mention Communion, tend to swing around censers at their concerts, and I’ve also seen videos of their concerts where they had icons projected behind them. So… Catholic or Orthodox, IDK. Mebbe neither!

They’re excellent, I just have a fit when I hear all the anti-Catholic stuff in their lyrics. One song on their most recent album is dedicated to Martin Luther.

It sounds like they may be an offshoot of the Scandinavian Metal Genre.

I listen to metal, only conditions I have is that they don’t have anti religious stuff, and trying to stay away from the curse words. 👍

Oh, there’s also Blessthefall, which is composed of all Catholic members. The name kind of gives that away, don’t it? “O blessed fault!”

I love Theocracy. I’ve been listening to them since their debut album came out 10 years ago. 👍

I don’t know if the song is “dedicated” to Martin Luther. It’s more like the story of the Reformation from Martin Luther’s point of view. 😛

I was a bit disappointed by that one, though. When I saw the song title (“Nailed”) I naturally thought it would be about the Crucifixion. And when it started, the intro was so cool. But then when the lyrics started I was definitely taken a back.

I don’t think they set out to be “anti-Catholic”, though. Some of the band members are Catholic, as is the guy that runs some of their social media stuff. But Matt Smith is not Catholic and his non-Catholic interpretations come through (at those times where there is a conflict – which isn’t that often). I do appreciate that he’s willing to tackle themes that most Christian bands wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole.

I know what you mean - they do have that Metallica edge to their music. I’m really beginning to like Katholicus. I think Sanctus Mysterioum: Opus Sacramentum in B minor is one of their most famous songs.

It seems to be favorited a lot.

I didn’t know they were Catholic members, the old BTF with craig was pretty “preachy”…I don’t know if they are still like that though.
