Breaking News: Court of Session in Edinburgh, Scotland, ruled today that Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board is not infringing on midwives’ human rights by not allowing them to conscientiously object to a supervisory role.

One of the midwives involved in the case has said the decision will have ‘very grave consequences for anyone of conscience who wishes to choose midwifery as a career.’

Is this the Supreme Higher Court in Scotland ?

In this case, yes the the Court of Session is the ‘high court’ but it would seem that the midwives have the right to appeal (perhaps as far as the House of Lords?) and also reserve the right to take their health board employer to an industrial tribunal.

This is a disgusting decision.

I think the midwives will even be able to appeal to the european court of human rights, in addition to inter-British appeals.

If Governments recognise the rights of quakers to object to killing in war, then they surely must respect the rights of midwives not to be involved in the killing of an unborn child.

Let’s say that it is a woman’s right to kill her child (it is not, but let us give them that point), but that does not lead to an obligation for anyone to perform that abortion. If she wants the murder done, she can’t force someone to do it (negative v positive rights). If one doesn’t want to provide the abortion, she will have to find someone else, not take the first person to court.
