I have family that is still mormon, and go occationally with them to Sacrement Meetings, but never told them my catholic leanings, it is kinda like my being a New Order Mormon, instead of a TBM.

Questions for you:

Any of you still attend occational sacrement meetings, as well as the Daily Mass, and Sunday Mass ?

Do you still have family that are still Mormons?

Are there any of the Mormon teachings you still follow?

I still follow the Word of Wisdom to a point, since I do drink Mountain Dews, but basically don’t smoke or drink, also I am very much still attached to the preexistence concept, due to the very large amount of NDEs on the internet that seem to support some form of preexistence, even if it is not as detailed as what mormons describe it.

I have to admit that I do have trouble with some of the mormon teachings right from the start, was baptised mormon Oct 1971, and those teachings I have trouble with are about the Baptisms for the Dead and the Eternal Marriage, but I am still attached to the concept of a preexistence of the soul, before our lives here on this Earth.

Google “Pre-Birth Experiences” and Preexistence.

There is a website for us people that are not True-Blue-Mormons(TBM). www.newordermormon.org

I went to Sacrament Meeting last Sunday since I was home for Thanksgiving (I went just to pacify my family) and I’ll probably go near Christmas for the same reason. Otherwise, I’m in school and live on my own so I don’t see any reason to go. My mother knows about my plans to convert and is quite supportive, though I can’t say the same about my father. He would certainly disown me if he knew.

My entire family is still LDS (though many are inactive and others are of the “Jack-Mormon” variety).

Teachings? Well many of the moral teachings in Mormonism are taken from earlier-held Christian teachings. I’m not married and so I don’t have sex, but is it appropriate to say that I abstain due to my Mormon upbringing or due to my conversion to Catholicism?

I guess you could count the Word of Wisdom as a teaching I follow (yet I don’t do so out of a religious duty, rather due to the obvious health benefits). I don’t smoke, do drugs, and I don’t drink hard liquor (never have and likely never will).

I don’t believe in any of the doctrines you listed.

I submit that once you are fully Catholic (baptized, confirmed and receiving all the sacraments) that you would be well advised to discuss this “Catholic Mormon” theory and practice with a Priest. 😉

I attend mass daily. I also attend the Mormon sacrament meeting every Sunday with my wife, but leave after that. All of my family is still Mormon except me. The Mormon Bishop is our home teacher and realizes I am a committed Catholic who does not believe the teachings of Mormonism. I still have a lot of respect for the way Mormons live out their moral teachings, but it’s not for me. I don’t find any reason to smoke or drink alcohol outside of the sip of wine at the Eucharist. By the way, Mountain Dew is not against the Mormon Word of Wisdom. Lots of good temple going Mormons drink caffeinated sodas. Only coffee and tea are restricted drinks.

I have heard various things from different Catholics (even on EWTN) about attending other churches. I don’t feel a need to burn bridges with my Mormon friends – I get questions from them about why I’m Catholic and can plant a seed every once in awhile. I couldn’t do that if I decided to avoid them entirely. Generally, I find that Mormons are delightful people.

And different priests will tell you different things. In the end everyone has to make a judgment regarding what route is best in their individual situation. At least I never have to make a choice about going to a Mormon temple wedding since they make that choice for me! I’ve already missed out on the marriage of two of my sons except for attending receptions.

I am now truly, fully and blessedly Catholic. I no longer attend Mormon anything and do not believe any of their doctrines, nor do I practice any of them. I still have a few Mormon friends and my son is dating a Mormon girl. I have no problem with them as long as they are not anti-Catholic; for the most part I find them friendly and understanding.

I think MelanieAnne was moreso speaking of the tendency to hybridize Catholic and Mormon theology into one’s own tailored religion (as endorsed by CAF members such as WhyMe and Tsuzuki) compared to being friendly to and keeping company with Mormons.

That’s correct. There have been Mormons who have posted to this forum who claim to be active in both faiths. That’s not rational, but that’s the claim.

I too have Mormon friends, some from childhood. I too have attended meetings, even classes, at Mormon churches with my Mormon friends. I’ve attended weddings, and have attended the funerals of the parents of my Mormon childhood friends, all at Mormon churches. I don’t see any problem with that.

But the idea that one can somehow blend the two faiths into some sort of hybridized Mormon/Catholic faith is preposterous. To attend a Mormon meeting with family ~ even a sacrament meeting ~ is fine ~ assuming of course the Catholic abstains from taking the Mormon sacrament. To attend social functions, weddings, funerals, etc. ~ no problem.

But to be active in both faiths ~ not possible because the faiths are utterly incompatible. And I submit that a Catholic priest, and probably a Mormon bishop, would agree.

Yeah I’ve seen them too and am just as confused by it.

Personally, I still think a few of them are merely trolling for the LDS church.

They may be trolling but some that have claimed to be active in both faiths claim to sincerely be doing so. I’ll take them at their word. However, to do so, they would need to be deceiving many people ~ first, themselves, but also their Catholic Priest and their Mormon Bishop. Deception, we must remember, also includes the failure to disclose pertinent information. In order to be active in both faiths you would also need to be deceiving the spiritual leaders of both faiths, which happens to be a sin in both faiths.

A properly catechized and active Catholic could not also be an active Mormon. I submit that those who claim to be both do not meet the definition of “properly catechized Catholic” at the very least. As to the state of their souls, that is not for me to decide. But I would reiterate the need for any such person to give full disclosure to their Catholic priest.

I don’t think a person could get away with it in the Mormon Church. As soon as the Bishop found out I was baptized Catholic I was told to resign from the LDS Church or attend a church court. You certainly could not get away with holding a temple recommend while at the same time being an active Catholic. And I would hope if the priest found out you were taking the sacrament at the LDS Church he’d force you into the confessional and tell you to cut it out. Why anyone who had become Catholic would want to take the bread and water at the Mormon Church is beyond me – I quit taking the Mormon sacrament long before I was baptized Catholic. I don’t think there is a middle way between Catholicism and Mormonism. If you want a middle way between Mormonism and something else you’re going to have to go to the Episcopal Church or the United Church of Christ or some other liberal Protestant denomination.

And your Mormon Bishop still wouldn’t go along with it, I just BET!

You miss so much as one or two Sacrament Meetings and homeboy is at your door! :o

I don’t quite understand the fence straddling. Either the Catholic Church is Christ’s Church and has been promised undetectability (in which case one should adhere faithfully to her and her alone) or the Church “apostatized” and Joseph Smith restored it in fullness (in which case one would adhere faithful to the LDS church and the LDS church alone).

My conversion to Catholicism isn’t complete but I’m certainly far removed from LDS practices. I no longer wear my garments, my CTR ring, and I even bot a coffee pot just to be a rebel! 😃

The only things I wont part with are my LDS literature. I still have a copy of the BoM and the D&C as well as numerous Gospel Doctrine and Priesthood manuals. I figure they could come in handy later on during a conversation.

Funny:

In 1989-90 I tried this. Attended a very early-morning Mass–mostly at a Lefbvrite church–while at the same time attending LDS services.

However, to do so with a good conscience requires one to be able to simultaneously believe diametrically incompatible beliefs simultaneously. And of course neither church would accept as a full member someone known to be a practicing member of the other body.

If you’re really struggling–as I did in the last couple of years–with trying to commit to one church or another–then hopefully God will wink at your times of ignorance until the light of the Holy Ghost can illumine you. If you’re trying to amalgamate two incompatible systems–I just don’t believe it can be done and I think you’ll need to be prepared to eventually choose one of two systems.

Please know I will be praying for you.

I am loyal and will continue to be to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Now, I suppose some are thinking — YOU NEED TO BE KICKED OUT OF THE CHURCH because I come to the forums here regularly.

Attend Mass occasionally.

My reasons is relative to understanding of people in general, whether on a faith journey or not or otherwise.

Yes, I sustain Thomas Monson as the prophet, seer, and revelator called by the Lord Jesus Christ. This man, I offer to you, did not seek, campaign, or prepare from a academic standpoint to be where he is. Again the head of the Church is Jesus Christ and speaking for myself, if I have a issue with his chosen servant, his mouthpiece on the earth, then hell I am ready for my arrival.

Further, as a temple recommend holder, it would be destroyed and I would not seek its replacement.

Lastly, the oath and covenant made to the Lord Jesus Christ regarding his holy priesthood that I did not seek nonetheless recognize the obligations placed on his called local authorities almost 20 years ago to add to their number myself.

SO, I will continue to pray for you regardless your decisions because that what I do. I love people regardless of their circumstances and try to the best of my ability, with my folibles to be better, with no arrogance or pride toward another man or woman, boy or girl.

Happy holidays to you and truly goodwill toward everyone continues to be my interest.

FOR THOSE FURTHER CONFUSED, ANGRY ,OR WHATEVER EMOTIONALLY, you are welcome to contact me privately since I will not explain my conviction relative to the truth, respecting how it was created and why, in detail here.

Thecourt, that’s all very well and good. But you’re not a Catholic.

And were you to attend Mass (which is fine) and partake of the sacrament there (which would not be fine, in your present state) you would be doing so unworthily. The faiths cannot be blended into some hybridized whole of your own making. And to attempt to do so requires active deception. That’s all we’re saying here.

I do not receive the communion.

So I forgot to state that.

Anyway since my interest was to reply as I have, continue on as you were.

Of course, I am beyond confident that I SHOULD NEVER HAVE COME TO ANY PARISH, much less the first 24 years ago for a Boy Scouts of America thank you to the parish that sponsored my Explorer post or should I ask does someone have a issue with the Boy Scouts of America and the Catholicism sponsoring numerous units from coast to coast?

I shouldn’t imagine anyone has any more problem with Catholic Boy Scout units than they might with Mormon Boy Scout units. Since Mormons also sponsor numerous units from coast to coast, I don’t know what this red herring is really all about.

Further, I am sure, heres another Mormon unwilling to answer questions ---- YET NO Private messages because…

Of course I am willing to respond to some things here, ONLY will through my perspective ONLY.

I am not a official spokeperson for the church in Salt Lake City and as always, if you desire, I would suggest talking to them. I have a friend will be helpful to you in that way. Bear in mind, the official (unofficial for those that see them that way) websites are available for review.
