Catholic nun jailed for 30 years for her part in Rwandan genocide

NAIROBI, Kenya: A Catholic nun has been sentenced to 30 years for helping militia kill hundreds of people hiding in a hospital during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, an official said Friday.

Theophister Mukakibibi was sentenced by a traditional gacaca court for helping Hutu militiamen to kill ethnic Tutsis seeking refuge from the slaughter in Butare hospital where she worked. She was jailed Thursday.

“She was responsible for selecting Tutsis and would throw them out of the hospital and the militia would then kill them,” said Jean Baptiste Ndahumba, president of the local gacaca court in Butare town. “This nun was organizing people to be killed.”

Kind of makes one wonder why she became a nun in the first place.

What is the background on her? How long was she a nun? Who was her supervisor? Was this her own choice, to kill these people, or was this one of those twisted situations of being coerced-similar to the American idea of the mofia?

Theophister Mukakibibi worked at the National University Hospital in the town of Butare during the genocide.
According to Jean Baptiste Ndahumba, president of the local gacaca court in Butare, the nun selected Tutsis sheltering in the hospital and threw them out for the militias to kill.
“She used to hold meetings with militiamen and had an army officer as her escort during the killings,” Mr Ndahumba said.
A number of Catholic and Protestant leaders have been accused of assisting the massacre in the Rwandan genocide. The trials in Rwanda are just ramping up, but nuns and priests have faced trials in Belgium (Rwanda’s former colonial master) for their actions during the genocide.
