I’m not arguing at all.
Arguing as in asserting a point, not fighting.
That men have a different perspective, view things differently, and have a unique struggle and trial that isn’t always obvious. I was hoping to get these people interested in working with men for the common goal of bringing everyone closer to Christ.
I understand that and I generally agree. I just think that after a certain point it becomes almost silly (shoulders, even upper arms etc). I can’t possibly address every guy’s weak spots.

It’s exhausting as a woman to be told that even the non sexual parts of her body are a problem.

The only womanly body meant to be shown off in Mass is the one of Holy Mother Church!!!
The trouble is many of us feel that our existence in church in something other than a muumuu is “showing off”. We’re not trying to show off so much as be able to attend church without there being a constant focus on whether we’ve done enough to remove the temptation that we represent by merely existing.

Even a muumuu isn’t enough.

Men also fall for a pretty face.

Men can also be tempted by a woman’s hair.

Cover up that hair.

Better cover up that face too.

A burqa may be better suited.

Or maybe not.

Why not just sequester all women at home.

Disclaimer: before someone flags this post, let me state that I am fully joking and partly sarcastic.

I have failed in my endeavors, through my own deficiencies
I would say that much of the response is that you are missing the struggles that women have. And that’s leading you to see simply telling women to cover up more as minor or essentially harmless, when it is not.

Having given this matter more thought, I am thinking that perhaps the priest should also preach to people at Mass about focusing their attention on praying and giving praise to God, instead of being fashion police people.
The devil uses issues like this, babies crying, people talking to each other, cell phones going on, etc., to distract us. It takes much discipline and focus to concentrate on God.
Let us all pray for the strength to overcome the distractions!!!

I’m a little late to this party, but I’m well aware of what happened. I’m shocked by all the backlash. I wonder how this went so viral?

Seeing all the feminists go nuts against purity is saddening, but not unexpected. Maybe they should ask men for their opinion about how it affects men before they simply say that how they dress doesn’t matter. Who am I kidding? Like that will ever happen.

On the other hand, I do think that the tweet was a bit much. Shoulders? I mean… come on. Are we going to start talking about ankles and collarbones too? Maybe I’m a bit desensitized, because I saw much worse at my college parish back in the day. But still, shoulders doesn’t seem to me like the hill to die on, you know?
I’m not saying this to be reactionary but instead to report what I saw on Twitter. It went viral because some were outraged that a woman at Mass would be told to cover her shoulders AND some were outraged that anyone would question a priest’s take on modesty. It honestly went both ways and many self-identified traditional Catholics really helped to propel the argument. Then Fr. Cusick left Twitter and loads of people claimed that his account was forcefully closed because he had “spoken the truth” (it wasn’t).

I don’t think this priest is well suited to social media. Words have to be chosen so carefully these days and in his piece for The Wanderer about his decision to leave Twitter, he acknowledged that he should have chosen his words more wisely.

Yes
Either lips or eyes are highlighted.

Makeup 101 - even I know that

Father has an excellent response to the reaction of his tweet over at The Wanderer. From the way he describes peoples comments, those responses sound way worse than his little tweet asking for modesty and some were from Catholic priests. The only thing he thinks he should have said differently was to use the word “impell” rather than “force”, otherwise as far as social media goes and the reason he made the tweet, well, he makes some excellent points.

Yes, I would prefer people who clearly don’t respect the Church not to show up at all. The question then begs, what else do they disregard or disrespect?
You are being uncharitable by assuming that because they are not dressed to your personal standards, they “clearly don’t respect the Church”. The fact that they are showing up for Mass at all proves otherwise. If they “clearly didn’t respect the Church”, they wouldn’t be at Mass in the first place.

And if you make them feel uncomfortable, they might well decide to stop coming to Mass altogether, so that you can enjoy Mass in solitude.

Nobody likes being around prudes and nitpickers, and a congregation that gains a reputation of being a bunch of prudes and nitpickers is doomed to extinction.
Based on your reasoning GordonP, it’s OK to have ‘Wordly Feel Good Views’ on top of original Church teachings. This way of thinking leads to further deterioration of Church ‘Virtue Teachings’ which results in bad changes such as, “Why not eat as you say Prayers during the meal”? Or “Why say Prayers prior to eating the meal at all”? You falsely accuse me of being ‘Uncharitable’ because I refuse to follow your ‘Worldly Views’ of the Church…I reject that position as well. God bless you and have a good day.

I might point out there is quite the difference between a woman showing up in short shorts and a crop top, and a woman showing up in a nice sleeveless top. One is clearly intended to be revealing, the other is on one side of a line not everyone agrees with.

Otherwise you could just as easily say any woman who attends Mass without a full headscarf is being disrespectful, because a lot of men find hair erotic.

I agree that spaghetti straps or tube tops and the like are inappropriate for mass. But I think that as long as the straps are a few inches wide and cover the tops of the shoulders, it’s fine. There is basically no part of western society that would find showing the sides of the shoulders or upper arms immodest, and I feel sorry for any man that is able to be distracted into lustful thoughts during mass by that. I can only imagine how distracted such a person must be outside of mass in general society.

Sometimes that’s also for when you see something you do like (for example, parts of a woman’s body for men, hence the need for modest dress).

@darklight has been a member of this forum for a long time. She is a wonderful example of a faithful Catholic young woman. To judge her as “worldly” is either uneducated or unkind.

I’m talking about impulsive thoughts and feelings that no one, man or woman has control over. We are not in complete control of our thoughts.
Maybe the issue is that some people here consider such thoughts as sinful. I don’t think so. If one starts having thoughts that are impure one should redirect the mind to think about something else. It’s not that difficult.

Uhhh…what are parts of a woman’s body that are for men?
What I mean is that for men, parts of a woman’s body are things that they do like but should still use custody of the eyes.
