Yeah. I mean this issue doesn’t shake me in my faith at all. But it makes me very sad and angry. Especially when there are bishops that were involved that haven’t been convicted or held to account in any way.

There are many millions more children tended by teachers than priests. Your statement is absurd.
What is your source?

This. When he’s done in Ireland in a few days, the Pope should head to Pennsylvania and fire a whole lot of people, then do public penance. It simply doesn’t matter how far in the past many of the incidents were. This one is on the bishops.
Pennsylvania is the only place whose books have been opened, not the only place where a crisis of leadership occurred.

This time there are pedophiles. One victim was under 2 years old.
Remember though it was 300 priests over a long period of time. One is too many but at least it was not all at once.

I, for one, am glad these stories are coming to light.
Nothing is more toxic than secrets.
Drag these stories out in the open and shine a spotlight on them.

Then help the victims and punish the perpetrators.

I didn’t deny that there are pedophiles. I said that the basic problem at the core of this is not pedophilia.

People of like mind always find each other. Artists gather together. Drug addicts gather together. Liberals, conservatives, Catholics, Protestants… we all find those of like mind to socialize with.

If you have a predilection for something, you will gather with others who share it. If the predilection is something society considers distasteful, you will hide it (for yourself and others). If that predilection involves a sexual orientation that society deems wrong, and you wish to remain private, what options do you have? If that predilection involves abuse of power, how do you find a place to exert authority over a person to abuse them?

All questions whose answers (for a homosexual and/or those with deviant sexual tendencies) lead them to the priesthood unfortunately (at least would have in the American Catholic Church of yesteryear!) And here we are.

I don’t see this being as prevalent in appearance from Protestant circles because of the lack of true structure in the Protestant Church. You could easily move around without being caught. Again, at least in the church of yesteryear. Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen there. Just there are no documents in Protestant files like Catholics have.

Abuse, coverups, all of it just awful. But I am a Catholic and a follower of Christ. The men were wrong. The structure and processes in place that allowed this to happen were wrong. That doesn’t make the faith is wrong. We have and need to continue to make changes within the Church to prevent this from happening. And pray of course.

So my response to those who would question my faith in the aftermath of these revelations? Simply this: My faith is in Christ. Christ built His Church on the rock of Peter, and we can all do all things through Christ who strengthens us. We are all sinners and should never be surprised at the revelation of the sins of others. We will move forward, we will reform, we will not let sin lead us away from Christ but we will renew our zeal to fight for what is true and right. We will hold our leadership accountable. We will not pride ourselves better than them, but remain humble and steadfastly work toward a better, more responsible Church whose leaders will reflect the true faith.

Off the cuff, sure I said something off or missed something, but time for work!

This will be a very difficult time to be a Catholic, especially a Catholic in Pittsburgh (as I am). All we can do is pray and be Christ’s hands!

Some one on the Catholic Answers radio program explained that this report includes many years of accusations . Many of these priests are dead and can’t even defend themselves if innocent. Please someone write a well researched article on this. Sure would be nice to get the whole truth.

Well, I didn’t pick them. Christ did.

St. Peter denied Christ three times publicly.

I just have to admit that God is in charge and He has a plan.
No HE did not! These were not Priests who became pedophiles these were pedophiles who became Priests, in which case their ordinations were great errors, the Holy Spirit does not make errors.
These men saw a great opportunity to be with unassuming innocent children and utilized it. Further more, if we truly want to unveil the atrocity and shine truth and light on the issue they should never have been moved to different parishes after there was any question OR reports of their abuses.
I will refuse to snub those that have ‘fallen away’ for the reasons that have befallen the Church. The Church has taught for centuries on the sanctity of the body and it’s link to the most intimate core of a person, and thereby recognizes the dignity associated with it. With reports of this destroyed dignity families in some cases may feel they are protecting their children, and since we are made in the Image and Likeness of God we have no right to stand in potential harms way or place our children there.

I do however feel bad for good Priests. They have a horrific cross to bear right now.

In reply, i would say that, people are innocent until proven guilty, and then I would ask about how many in non catholic institutes are also guilty of the same thing.
Looking to the “other” camps is a non-issue, or it ought to be.
48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. (Gospel of Luke)

I find no excuses nor would I further depreciate the value and sanctity of the human person by continuing to employ the idea that we should “look at all the other churches, they do it too”

It’s dehumanizing to the circumstances and lessens the severity of it’s widespread problem that was not addressed when it should have been within the Catholic Church and offers no consolation to the victims.

Most of this is old news and some of the abusers became priests before the more rigid tests.
and from what I understand many of the priests on this list are dead or have already been laicized.

I agree and this won’t be popular but it appears more to be same sex attraction.
As a man with same-sex attraction myself, I would suggest that the problem isn’t the attraction but certain men’s tendencies to deal with the attraction in secretive, repressed, and/or hedonistic ways. The Church is complicit in their choices, in many of these cases. What guidance were these boys with SSA being given, in 1970? How was Christ’s love being shown to them?

It is easier than saying “what goes around comes around” and everybody understands this as commonplace experience of life without having to be Buddhist yes?
So you think the priests and bishops should receive no punishment at all? Just leave it up to nature or whatever to punish them?

Something else besides same sex attraction that could be added to a cause for this, is the sexual revolution in our society, especially during that time period, since most of this seems to have happened during that time. Priests are human and when the world is putting thoughts, ideas, imagery and the like in front of them, some are bound to succomb and fall and for many it was a great fall.

That is probably not a welcoming thought because that would mean we all have to look at ourselves too, what happened during the sexual revolution, what is happening in our world today and how are these things fallouts from the sexual revolution.

Homosexuality and child abuse are two very different things. Most homosexual men wouldn’t dream of harming a child.
