Do pedophiles choose to be attracted to children?

Not sure off anyone answered this for you yet or not. He left the Catholic Church for the Orthodox Church.

If I’m honest… I used to think it was actually due to abuse. Those who are sexually abused tend to express their sexuality far differently than those who aren’t (male OR female).

I’m not saying abuse causes homosexuality but when I personally meet sexually aggressive people my first thought is that they were abused at some point.

I REALIZE I AM PROBABLY WRONG> Just a different perspective.
I wonder why you think I would freak out in response to this. I pretty much agree. In fact, I would say that the evidence is reasonably strong that SOME cases of homosexuality are triggered by abuse. Mind you, “triggered” does not mean “caused” – a trigger is only one factor. But the percentage of gay people who were sexually abused is abnormally high, and some sort of connection is one explanation.

It’s worth saying loudly, though, that a trigger for SOME gay people is not a cause for EVERY gay person. Most gay people were never abused.

From the gay men I have known throughout the years, I’d have to disagree with this statement. They were all extremely promiscuous, and made sexual references in casual conversation constantly. Do some research on studies showing how many partners the average gay man has had, most of them with people they didn’t even know.
Yes, some are like that. But the priest scandal is bot a homosexual thing. Many were heterosexual. Some married men are child molesers. Women, too.

I have seen people get banned for this, so you might want to change the post in the future.

I don’t know what causes a grown man to abuse a child. I just know, in my experience, most are heterosexual and often married. Of course the priests weren’t married.

My dad was a child molester. My dad was not a priest. You cannot blame the institution. It happens for a variety of reasons, we don’t know what their childhoods were like. THis isn’t the Jedi. They aren’t taken from their families and raised in isolation.

They need to train them to resist the contagion of the world. They are going to have to work among fallible people, not saints. They are training to be priests not monks.

Absolutely right. I won’t touch it with a ten foot pole in the future.

IF they were put a minor seminary and you don’t know that THESE priests were. I haven’t actually met one that WAS. So calm your roll and your presumptions.

I personally know of 1 priest who is an abuser. This was years and years ago. I was 100% sure he was a real jerk (apologies for the word, but I do not have any other one to describe him, well I do, but they are all stronger than this one), because I knew some of the kids he abused.

When I expressed my shock and my total rejection to such an act, the very religious older ones in my family (and some priests) advised to “let it go”…”he is a priest and will be forgiven anyway”, “look the other way, it is none of your business”, it was like he was god and could do anything he wanted.

This REALLY shook my belief in the Catholic Church….what’s more, to this day, I never recite the “I believe in the catholic church” part of the apostles creed, because of this (sorry Lord, it’s just the way it is). I cannot possibly put my full trust on an institution that condones this.

However, young as I was when this happened, I put my foot down with the “older people” in my family and said NO, it is NOT acceptable at all, and should be rejected at ALL COSTS! They told me I was disobedient towards the Catholic church because of this stand, and told me to confess my sins!!! Yes shocking.

Every time this topic comes up, my position remains the same. Totally and irrefutably unacceptable and these people should be removed from ministry and punished otherwise. That’s my stand. Anybody, absolutely anybody, who abuses of children, the loved ones of Jesus, should not be allowed around them, at all. Period. No buts, no ifs, no nothing.

(Sorry guys, my views on this topic, as you can see, is totally unmovable)

When my husband was still working–he’s now retired–he made sure to never be alone with a woman employee, never be alone in the same room with her, and make sure he was in possible eyesight-line with somebody else. People have found out how lucrative it now is in the US to be a “victim.” So cover that butt. Don’t be alone in a room with anybody and, of course, that goes triple for kids and women.

That’s a very good idea. No, excellent.

That’s insane… and disheartening. The laity definitely need re-educating.

If it helps, there was abuse in my family and while not Catholic everyone had the EXACT same attitude. You didn’t speak of the abuse, it was YOUR fault (as the victim) that it happened and it was considered disgraceful to bring it up. It seems like it was the culture of the time.

Do apologize on behalf of the Church and ask for that person’s forgiveness.
(Karlo Broussard Apologist)
  • Absolutely not! I will not apologize for the sins of others. The people responsible should apologize.
The Church has taken and must continue to take action on this issue.

Good point. I myself do not believe in apologizing for things I had nothing to do with and mostly happened when I was a child/ teen myself, or not even born. I can say, " I’m sorry you went through all that" but that’s not the same as an apology.

So it’s guilt by association now? No, I don’t buy into that load of 🐂
