I am baptized catholic but for most of my life, I never had 100% faith that there was a God and life after death and that Jesus was really who he said he was. Deep down I held onto the belief that there has to be something after death and that if god is real, he is forgiving and everything will be okay. I always was envious of people with deep faith like the many on this board. Just recently I was knocking down that block and I started to believe that God is real and Jesus is real and I couldn’t believe the happiness I felt. I felt my life completely change.
Then I stumbled on this website: aish.com/jw/s/48892792.html where it talks about why Jewish people don’t believe in Jesus. Now, that isn’t the problem, and I understand that they have different views, as do other religions do, but I have to admit, reading about the virgin birth of Jesus (one of the reasons why they don’t believe in him) made me question my newly found belief in Jesus.
this is what they wrote:
“The Christian idea of a virgin birth is derived from the verse in Isaiah 7:14 describing an “alma” as giving birth. The word “alma” has always meant a young woman, but Christian theologians came centuries later and translated it as “virgin.” This accords Jesus’ birth with the first century pagan idea of mortals being impregnated by gods.”
Is it true that chrisian theologians translated the birth as virgin? If this is the case, then it makes me question who is right and wrong. Maybe no religion is completely right or maybe there is one that is. Maybe each religion has facts and fictions. Maybe the atheists are right and there is nothing after death. Maybe whatever you believe in is right.
It was interesting to read their various reasonings, because it made me realize that each religion has their own set of beliefs, some beliefs are so opposite of another’s so someone has to be wrong. If people can’t agree, that’s because there is no proof, just a theory of xyz happening. If there was proof of xyz, then people would agree and we would all be the same religion. Probably not, that’s just my random thoughts.
I hope I don’t offend anyone, I am just trying to figure out what do I really believe. If someone can read that page to the link I posted and comment because they put up a few statements comparing their reasonings to the catholic reasonings that just made me question what I should believe as a catholic maybe isn’t right.
