Actually, they are not technically in schism, but they have an extremely irregular status that is essentially schism in all but name, and their masses are not licit. Some of their sacraments, including confession, are currently invalid as well, which means they have no effect.

there is a rule in the catholic church that one bishop not ordain another bishop without a mandate from the pope. Archbishop Lefevre disobeyed Pope John Paul II and ordained foru bishops without this mandate.Therrefore, unfortunately there exists a schism as a result of Archbishop Levevre’s disobedience. There have been talks with the leadership of the sspx and the vatican where hopefully an arrangement can be made to regularize this unfortunate situation. Let us all pray that these talks are successful and that thsi situation can be regularized.

Here is a listing that includes EACH of the twenty-three Catholic Churches in union with the Pope. Do not confuse “churches” with “rites”. A rite is a series of traditions, that includes different customs and liturgies. Several different churches may use the exact same rite. A Church has its own rules and separate line of authority to the Pope. It may also have a figure in charge, like a Metropolitan or a Patriarch (like an Archbishop), since these churches are generally very small and work very hard to preserve their unique traditions. The major rites are the Latin, Alexandrian, Antiochian, Armenian, Chaldean, and Byzantine.

It’s taken me a couple of years to compile this response, and I have it saved on my computer. It’s a combination of other answers from on here, combined with the list of Catholic Churches and dates from Wikipedia. I’m constantly revising it to try and make it more clear and add minor corrections when necessary.

Also, Bishop Williamson, one of the four SSPX bishops, was expelled from the SSPX (BY the SSPX) just a couple of weeks ago.

There is an article that says that the SSPX do have a licit Mass. I posted the link for this article on the Traditional Catholic forum and was blasted by another poster for posting the link.

You got “blasted” because the site you posted from has things like John Paul II to be “Beatified”, and stating that the original excommunications were not valid (spoiler alert; they were). The site is less than reputable and contains articles and statements which are at best uncharitable, and at worse flagrantly going against the Church.

You could posted an article from the Vatican or another source, the reaction would have been calmer.

Anyway the article is correct. The SSPX Mass does fulfill the Sunday obligation no matter from which site it came from.
