Basic dignity means calling a person by their name. Legally in the United States people can change their name to whatever they want to, and that’s a good thing too because sometimes the name a person’s parents gave to them can become a detriment.
I’ll repeat myself; if someone says “My name is John”, and you say “No it’s Beth!” and insist on only calling him Beth then you’re not a “hero” or a “champion of the church”, you’re just a bully. Even most priests and bishops, when they meet transgender people, call them by the name they actually want.
