I don’t dispute that there could be educational lessons to be gained from learning the correct use of guns. It’s an abiding regret of mine that when I was at school I had the opportunity to join the Air Training Corps and chose not to (I assume that ATC at some point involves learning to use guns). My dispute with the comment to which I was replying was that “Kids have guns” was listed as one of the “perks” of homeschooling. The implication seemed to be that children not having guns at school was in some way a bad thing. If you look at the history of school shootings in the US, it seems frankly crazy to think that “Kids have guns” is one of the reasons to prefer homeschooling over regular school. So I think it depends how you present it. You’re saying that you use shooting as an educational experience and you point to the possibility of making more use of that by possibly enrolling in an officers’ training corps, and you mention that some US public schools do provide that opportunity anyway. That’s very different to someone saying that “Kids have guns” is a reason to home school.
