I think McGuinty should be called a lapsed Catholic as clearly he doesn’t follow the teaching of the Catholic Church.

I expect the Archbishop of Toronto to say something about this. If he doesn’t give advice to teachers then he is failing in his duty.

I always respect the parents who pull their students out of our fifth grade’s science classes on reproduction (I teach in a public school). This sex ed nonsense is yet another reason I’m glad my son’s in a Catholic school

I think age appropriate sex ed is good. I go to Catholic school, I have all my life and I have learned sex ed. Did I understand it? Nah, not when I was younger. But I think we should know how the reproductive system works by high school.

Now other than the science of reproduction (learned at the right age), the stuff we learn in what was called “fully alive” was a joke. Yes, its better for kids to learn this properly instead of picking it up from some random kid on the playground (who prob picked it up from an older sibling/parent/T.V…b/c their parents let them watch it.) However the teachers are too embaressed to teach it properly. It was a waste of time. I never knew how the sperm and the egg joined (in grade 5). I asked the teacher and she said it had a tail to swim. I though it swimmed through the air for some time. …In the end, it was like picking stuff up from a random kid.

I learned more from my parents, ( by making sure I watched age appropriate things, etc), from religion class on abstinance, etc.

By the way, this is on my personal experience, and that of my classmates.

And this “new stuff” is not age appropriate at all.

Ok, there are SOME forms of sex ed that are NEEDED. My family never taught me ANYTHING. Not one thing. I didn’t even know what the difference between girls and boys until almost high school. Kids, at the right age, should learn about how their bodies work (My school had the night for girls, andother for boys, where you got the nice little movie and talk about puberty, menstruation, all that, which no one would have told me at home, so I’m thankful) and I also think it’s good for older children to know that should you decide to have sex, there are a whole slew of diseases and illnesses that you could contract, and how easily a young woman could become pregnant.

However, first grade, or even elementary school AT ALL is too soon to learn about anything but gender-specific body changes. But…I knew so many girls and guys who were having sex at 11, 12 and 13. I don’t support teaching all about birth control and intercourse and oral sex, but I do support teaching teens about the dangers of unprotected sex, and most importantly, how you should WAIT.

In Ontario the Catholic schools are funded by the public so I think the government has the right to tell them what the curriculum should include. Plus, there i nothing that sex ed would teach me that I did not learn in a Catholic school locker room from my peers. In fact, the sex ed only served to correct the many myths that young boys believe in.

Doesn’t mean they WILL. There’s a lot of shoulds in the world, should that yes, SHOULD be implemented, but by stopping all kinds of sex ed and simply telling the parents it’s up to them, that’s going to leave a lot of kids, ones who are already neglected or ignored, or whose parents find this unimportant, out in the cold.

My family wouldn’t have done it. I remember many times asking my dad and grandma questions relating to development, my changing body, drugs, alcohol, and not once was I given an answer. If it wasn’t for sex ed in school, I would have been one of those girls getting their period for the first time, scared to death that I was dying. I probably would have ended up having sex and getting pregnant, because gosh, no one told me where babies came from.

in my time, they introduced sex education (and it doesnt talk about oral sex at all) to school at 14 years old…by then most kids knew something, and could at least appreciate the ‘correct information’ and set their minds right.

but bringing it down to elementary school just means, half of the kids who hadn’t know a thing about sex will get to know something, and be curious.

but then again, with the internet, far too many children get to read many things that they are not ready to, and hence misled. i say its better to filter the content of internet and tv then to teach about ORAL sex even.

I’m all for sex ed in the schools, but not the pre-marital sex is okay and lets teach all kinds of forms of perversion type.

For the younger grades, they should know which parts of the body that others should not be touching. In junior high school level (12-13) they should be taught abstinence only education as condoms are a miserable failure for spreading the physical and emotional pain of sexually transmitted diseases. They should also be taught the insane high levels of getting a STD from gay sex as well. Don’t think McGuinty is keen on that!!

It’s up to the schools to educate the parents, but not the children? Hmmm…that’s a rather interesting view point.

In any event, if you leave it up to the parents, sadly, quite a few kids will be left with little information and in some cases incorrect information.

Take my friend for example, the only thing his parents told him about reproduction was that babies came from God. Nothing else…babies came from God.

Leave it up to the parents…sure.

I would rather it not be taught.

I can get shot by a police officer if I rob a bank. I should not be taught by some "educator’ to wear a life vest if I elect to rob a bank. I should be “taught” by my parents, and society at large, not to rob banks.

You don’t have a choice in many provinces. In Sask. your municipal taxes are directed to a particular system but it’s not that way in all provinces that have Catholic schools (not all provinces have Catholic schools). Certainly here in Nfld & Lab when we still had a Catholic system, all the denominational systems were funded from the public purse based only on student population.
