Catholic schools must teach new sex ed: McGuinty

in my time, they introduced sex education (and it doesnt talk about oral sex at all) to school at 14 years old…by then most kids knew something, and could at least appreciate the ‘correct information’ and set their minds right.
I don’t know about your community but in mine a large percentage of kids are already sexually active by that age. In fact, 15 years ago when my older son was in grade 7 one of his classmate was selling oral sex.

They need the information sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, many don’t get it at home.

Doesn’t mean they WILL. There’s a lot of shoulds in the world, should that yes, SHOULD be implemented, but by stopping all kinds of sex ed and simply telling the parents it’s up to them, that’s going to leave a lot of kids, ones who are already neglected or ignored, or whose parents find this unimportant, out in the cold.

My family wouldn’t have done it. I remember many times asking my dad and grandma questions relating to development, my changing body, drugs, alcohol, and not once was I given an answer. If it wasn’t for sex ed in school, I would have been one of those girls getting their period for the first time, scared to death that I was dying. I probably would have ended up having sex and getting pregnant, because gosh, no one told me where babies came from.
It should not be done by schools.

It’s up to the schools to educate the parents, but not the children? Hmmm…that’s a rather interesting view point.

In any event, if you leave it up to the parents, sadly, quite a few kids will be left with little information and in some cases incorrect information.

Take my friend for example, the only thing his parents told him about reproduction was that babies came from God. Nothing else…babies came from God.

Leave it up to the parents…sure.
Not educate the parents…inform them that the schools will not be teaching those things to their kids, and it should be done by the parents. It does NOT belong in schools, period.

It is fully immoral, imo, to have schools teaching things that parents (and only parents) should be teaching, Schools should be teaching reading, writing, math, science, history, etc…they should not have anything to say or do regarding any topic of morality, or any topic of sexuality–in any way.

It should not be done by schools.
Oh great, let’s play Ignore All My Points in favor of your own personal opinion.

School sex ed is the ONLY reason, the ONLY one, that I waited, saved myself, and know where babies come from. Becuase my family was sure a bad example about waiting.

It isn’t about teaching morality. It’s about teaching biology. It’s about telling an 11 year old girl she’s about to bleed from her vagina once a month for the rest of her life, and if she has sex, she can become pregnant, and here’s how

Newsflash, buddy. SOME PARENTS DON’T CARE.

I think its important to educate children about sex, but it has to be done by someone moral.

I was surrounded by kids who knew and talked about sexual things, but I learned nothing official about it. One good message I got from that was that, whatever those kids were talking about, was really really bad, since it was a banned topic at home. So bad that even a vague reference to it on tv or elsewhere would cause the parents to get upset.

Then in grade 12 we had a sex ed class for the first time, and the scandalous thing was that the teacher had permissive ideas about sex. It had more to do with how it was taught, with how the teacher allowed student participation in the discussion, etc. The teachers morals did a lot to influence me for the worse.

But I think kids need to learn about sex, including about STD’s and the religious aspects of it, from moral adults, rather than from other kids. The typical teacher certainly doesn’t fit this requirement, even at a so-called Ontario catholic school.

I believe that liberty is far more important than equality…far more important. I simply do NOT want someone else to teach their sense of right and wrong to our children. The simple truth is sex ed classes pass on a certain perspective on what is right and wrong about sexual activity. There is a reason kids are having sex at ever increasingly lower ages, and sex-ed (imo) is one of the main reasons.

I did not ignore anything. I feel sex education in schools is immoral and wrong. I want it done by parents, period. You will not change my mind…do not waste your time trying. I have never stated to anyone on these threads that I am closed about any issue, I remain open to just about everything…yet not on this issue. I am 100% convinced that sex-ed in schools is immoral and there is nothing you can say that will change my view. I am just being honest to help save you time and effort. 🙂

Well then wonderful. Are YOU going to be the one driving all around the country helping the poor kids whose parents don’t want to help them?

So, it’s LIBERTY to allow children to be neglected in schools because their parents don’t love them enough to teach them in home? “Sorry, Billy, I know you’re hurting and afraid and confused, and that Mommy doens’t love you enough to teach you things you absolutely need to know, but some people don’t think I should be allowed to tell you where babies come from. Now, run along!”

So. my school nurse was IMMORAL for telling me about menstruation? Yeah, that sounds good. Because it’s MUCH more MORAL to let a 12 year old think she’s dying and be absolutely PETRIFIED.

Yeah, sounds WONDERFUL

Giving a child an education is NOT about “equality.” It’s about common DECENCY.

I completely agree that children should have age-appropriate sex eduction, but not like this

First of all, I think teenagers should be proficient in basic physiology of their body and the various methods of NFP, should take a parenting course, and an anger management course before graduating from high school. Their education SHOULD include artificial birth control if not for the very important reason of educating them on the serious side effects that occur with taking them. The classes SHOULD include the use of condoms to avoid STDs and the truths that go along with it. They are going to hear all about the pros of taking ABCs and condoms from everyone and anyone, therefore it’s our responsibility that they know the whole story, not just the popular one. Someone should also develop some kind of self esteem/morality course to follow up on a similar course developed for grammar school kids to teach them that their body is not a pair of shoes to be worn by everyone in the city in which they live and at least ten surrounding suburbs

I do think that some things are better explained by someone outside the home. But I don’t believe that kids need all the useless mind clutter that they’re trying to instill in kids in these sex education courses these days. In most cases, I don’t believe the material is age appropriate.

THIS. THere is so much more to sex ed than how to roll a condom on a banana, which we never did, BTW. In 8th grade, our girls’ health class had a semester long study on healthy relationships, that taught us how to respect ourselves, respect our bodies, take care of them (feminine hygeine and the like) and how to have healthy relationships with our friends and guys. We learned how to avoid bad situations, how to say no to a guy’s sexual advances, and why we should respect ourselves enough to know we’re worth waiting for. Maybe it’s just being from Kansas, but I don’t see anything immoral about this.

People today have no clue just how important liberty is, and how easy it is to give it away. They also do not realize that we have been giving our liberties away for the last 20-30 years. One day, if things continue as they are, we will wake-up basically as an enslaved people and a ton of folk will wonder how that happened. They will wonder why they can no longer practice their faith as it should be, or why they cannot go outside their homes after a certain time at night, or why people are being arrested for protesting things in public, or why they cannot buy the things they want or work in the jobs they desire…they’ll wonder all those things and much more. Then, they will begin to realize just how important liberty is and they will also know at that time that it is too late to get it back! Liberty lost is America destroyed!

And, it all happens one “well intentioned” piece at a time.

You sound like a conspiracy theories. I’m very glad you’re not in any position to make decisions for MY children.

thestar.com/news/canada/article/798591–catholic-schools-must-teach-new-sex-ed-mcguinty

'McGuinty, the province’s first Catholic premier, says all publicly funded schools must teach the curriculum, which will see lessons taught to kids as early as Grade 1.

Starting this fall, the revised curriculum will see Ontario students learning about masturbation in Grade 6 and oral sex at age 12.

The self-described “family focused” groups are mounting a campaign to get rid of the program and calling for a rally May 10 to put pressure on the governing Liberals.’
I don’t see anything wrong with teaching sex education at age 12.

However I don’t think that they should be teaching children that masturbation is ok (it probably the worst addicting habit/sin) and to encourage oral sex as an alternative to intercourse and to encourage safe sex and in the process giving the wrong impression that having sexual intercourse at age 14 or so is OK.

I my self attended a Catholic Middle School and we had Sex Ed at age 12 too but our sex Ed was a lot different than what the US syllabus seems to be like. This isn’t Sex Ed; this is an bunch of immoral heresies.

Nope, not even remotely a conspiracy theorist. But, thanks for caring. 🙂

I just happen to believe very strongly in:

LIFE–LIBERTY–AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!

A culture that seeks equality for all will lose its liberties, and a culture that seeks liberty for all will mean that some are not treated equally. You cannot have both and we are already seeing the profoundly bad impact of moving towards equality for all.

The things I desribed in my last message will be real if we continue to push for equality for all, rather than liberty for all.

Personally, I treasure liberty for all and I believe God does too because God never messes with out ability to freely choose.

Thanks for the chat. 🙂

You don’t have a choice in many provinces. In Sask. your municipal taxes are directed to a particular system but it’s not that way in all provinces that have Catholic schools (not all provinces have Catholic schools). Certainly here in Nfld & Lab when we still had a Catholic system, all the denominational systems were funded from the public purse based only on student population.
I can vouch for that. You choose to either give the education portion of your property tax to the Public or the Catholic system (and subsequently can only vote for trustees for the system your tax goes to, which seems fair to me). About 5 years ago that there was actualy an editorial in the paper saying we should get rid of the Catholic system (money issues, of course), and there was a major backlash over it.

Schools provide education. Sex education.
While that is the logical stretch inferred, I must provide a point of protest. Your belief/opinion that schools can/should provide sex education is obviously grounded in the deeper belief that you can know what is right and what is wrong, and therefore can voice an opinion on the matter. If you yourself can know what is right and wrong about this issue, and what is possible and not possible, then you are capable of instructing others (such as your own children) about this issue. If I were to pass a law saying Zatzat’s teachings are incorrect, and teach every child in Ontario that Zatzat is wrong about everything, you would naturally (and rightfully) cry fowl against me and say I was abusing my powers.

Again, you would be right.

McGuinty is stealing the parents’ right and perogative to properly educate their children about issues such as sex and their gender identity (I am from Ontario: the main post does not mention that starting in Gr.6 the schools will be teaching children about “sexual orientation” and “gender identity”). McGuinty’s object here is not ensuring children are instructed about these issues, if that were the case he’d ensure the public in general was informed and parents specifically.

The reason this is fundamentally flawed:
  1. It is ridiculously redundant. The Ontario government only needs to ensure that parents have the information necessary to properly inform their children about these issues. It does not require its own class and curriculum.
  2. The fact that the Ontario government is permitting parents to opt their children out of these classes betrays the program itself. Clearly it is more indoctrination than it is education. No fool would think of permitting Math lessons to be opted out of a curriculum; Math is fundamental and necessary instruction. Obviously Sex Ed is not as a child can not receive instruction in it and still receive their diploma.
  3. Being redundant, it is a ridiculous waste of time and money. Either the government is wasting time and money or they are investing in something (the latter being more likely). Parents are already obliged by nature to teach their children about the birds and the bees. Parents have a natural interest in ensuring their children have a safe, healthy attitude in regards to sexual activity. The School Board only has an indirect interest in the well-being and welfare of the child, and it will never compare to a parents’.
  4. No one would appreciate a stranger randomly walking up to a child with a mission to instruct them about sex, their sexual identity, sex-orientation, etc. You would likely call the police on such a person. The fact that the government is outfitting its servants to do this does not change what is ultimately wrong about such a presumption: it is deeply perverted and such information can have a massive impact or influence on a child’s world-view. In my honest opinion, the purpose of McGuinty’s “Sex Ed” is to have an impact on the aforementioned world-view. It has little to nothing to do with the welfare of the child being instructed.
  5. #4 therefore implies that this is social engineering, and nothing more. Government has usurped upon a natural right of parents. The fact, again, that this is totally redundant and therefore needless and wasteful is proof enough. If the government’s only object was informing citizens about sex and health issues, they would inform the public in general and parents specifically, as it has a bearing upon us all. This would save the government a lot of time and money. School children could then learn what they should be learning in school (English, Math, Science, etc.) and learning from parents what they should be learning from parents (the birds and the bees).
Frankly, I am sick of McGuinty. I was a supporter of his but now he has crossed the line and this whole program is the fruit of a very perverted mind. What kind of a person wakes up one day and gets it into their head to teach everyone’s children about “gender identity”?

You sound like a conspiracy theories. I’m very glad you’re not in any position to make decisions for MY children.
But you have no reservations about imposing your views on my children. Who are you to decide what is right or wrong with my children? Just because your parents never told you about certain aspects of your body doesn’t justify having moral and sexual values by Catholic apostates masquerading as Catholic teachers to my children. This I can very easily substantiate as can any person who has grown up in the Catholic School system.

I just hope this isn’t binding on Private Schools.

Ok, then, so what DO you want to do for the kids who are 17 and still don’t know where babies come from? Or the preteens who are scared and confused about what’s happening to them? Just ignore them? Just have some lofty hope and a prayer than their parents will suddenly think it’s important? Or, just let them find the internet and learn through porn, like so many of my friends had to do?

We’re not talking about a bunch of gays trying to be equal in marriage; we’re taliking about KIDS who are NOT going to be told at hime, no matter HOW much you’d like them to be. Answer me this; What to do with them? If Mommy and Daddy don’t care, and the school isn’t alowed to, what are they gonna do?

Oh, wait. Liberty, being the opposite of equality, says forget about them. Because helping them might GASP, make them EQUAL to all the OTHER kids whos parents DID love them enough to share this with them. GOD FORBID we take care of CHILDREN. What a travesty.

Ok, then, so what DO you want to do for the kids who are 17 and still don’t know where babies come from?
Tell them to stop skipping Biology.
Or the preteens who are scared and confused about what’s happening to them?
Re-assure them that it is natural.
Or, just let them find the internet and learn through porn, like so many of my friends had to do?
I don’t know the last time you attended a Sex Ed class in Ontario, but let me re-assure you that the nickname for the portable wasn’t called the “porno-portable” by my Gr. 7 classmates for no reason. We suggested a puke bucket under each desk so poor students didn’t have to bolt for the door and throw-up over the railing leading up to the portable*.

*EDIT:ADDED: I have a strong memory of everyone asking how they got the camera inside the woman’s privates that could video-tape the ejucalation of sperm inside of her from the thrusting penis. This scene was the largest offender for causing classmates to run out of the class and vomit.
