Three Catholic members of the US Senate finance committee-- Senators John Kerry of Massachusetts, Maria Cantwell of Washington, and Robert Menendez of New Jersey-- voted against a proposed amendment that would have prohibited the use of federal funds to subsidize abortion payments under the proposed health-care reform legislation. (Another Catholic member of the committee, Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky, cast his vote in favor of the amendment.) If the Catholic senators had united behind the pro-life amendment, their support would have reversed the outcome of the 13-10 vote allowing for abortion funding.
