Catholic shrine vandalism

That’s a very lovely shrine and I have been there a number of times, but they have a large number of statues and little security. Hopefully they will beef up their security. Simply being in the middle of nowhere, as this place is, will not protect you from bored vandals riding around looking to break stuff.

Edited to add, I’m also guessing they will replace those statues with less breakable metal ones, as those white statues are very old and made out of something breakable, and the newer ones they have put in more recently, like St. Padre Pio and St. Faustina, are all metal.

Not sure if they were “bored” vandals. There seems to be a larger trend, and coincidentally, the media is targeting the Catholic Church. Anti Catholicism is the one remaining respected bigotry.

It’s not the first time that shrine has had vandalism. You can think what you like, I’m pretty sure it was just bored teenagers, maybe having a Hail Satan moment. It sure wasn’t some sort of organized resistance to the Catholic Church or they would have smashed up a lot more stuff than they did. That place has like a couple hundred statues and other breakable items out in the open.

A shrine in another part of the country where I visited had a huge bronze angel stolen…it was your average local rednecks on drugs who sold it for scrap.

The media likes to make a big deal out of “hate crimes” but most of them are these sorts of disorganized efforts by the local petty criminal element.

Often relics are stolen in Italy by people who either want the reliquary or are seeking to profit from the relics. I don’t understand why they don’t get better security.
