Well I’m new to these forums but here in Kansas an unusual and exciting event is taking place. And since the “dialogues” are alternating between the two churches this Friday August 1, we will have the unusual situation of having a Roman Catholic Archbishop making a presentation at a Southern Baptist Church.

Archbishop Naumann as you may recall is the one who called the governor of Kansas on the carpet for being a Catholic who both supported abortion and took communion. We are lucky to have him here in Kansas.

It says these talks went public on July 25. Any updates? Glad to read about it anyway.

The first talks were at the parish hall of the Catholic Church in Wea Kansas. There were maybe 40 to 50 people in attendance. Both presenters did an outstanding job. Of particular interest was how the Southern Baptist preacher talked about how Luther had it wrong. Obviously a good ploy in a Catholic Church. All who attended thougt it went well and there seemed to be no sectarianism or animosity at all.

If you have a link to an MP3 or audio of the talk, please share it!

Wow! Super cool!

Funny thing though - it is occurring on a First Friday! Coincidence? Probably not! Reparation to the Sacred Heart kept on First Fridays is in part for unity among Christians.

I’ll keep all that will be going on on that day in my prayers and intentions when I go to the Frist Friday Mass that day.

Peace,

Gail

Unfortunately there was no recording of the first dialogue. Perhaps there will be for subsequent. I’ll get them for you if I can.

What is the purpose of these dialogues?
Basically to do a “gap” analysis. Meaning what do we really disagree about? What do we agree on that we don’t think we do? What terms do we use that mean different things to the different traditions.

That is very important because I have found that often Christians use the same words but mean vastly different things. Grace being a biggie.

Perhaps a transcript or article reporting on it?
I can get a transcript of Matthew Tsakanikas, (the Catholic commentators) speech. The Baptist preacher spoke from an out line. Once I figure out how to make that available I’ll let everyone know.

What is the ultimate goal of this dialogue?

To win converts to the True Church? Or to help us “understand” and “get along” with one another? I hope it’s the first, because that’s the only thing that truly matters.

Well you have two different participants. They may have different agendas. But I don’t see anything wrong with understanding each other. Nor do I see anything wrong with getting along. That would have to be the start to anything more significant anyway.

And if it is the latter, may it lead to the former.

As Kscrawler said, ‘getting along’ and ‘understanding’ are the starting point. If we can have true dialogue and clear away misconceptions, than we can pray that those who misunderstood the Church will now hear the Lord calling them home.

All of this sounds great. Let us know how the Archbishop does tomorrow!

The Southern Baptist Preacher has set up a web site for the “Dialogues”. The link is below. Much more will be added in the next few days as it is only a few hours old as of Aug. 1.

The dialogues were very well received on Friday night. The Archbishop and the Southern Baptist Preacher both did outstanding jobs, noted where they disagreed, and kept the discussion both civil and entertaining. Both the transcripts of their talks and the audio should soon be available to anyone wanting to hear at the web site set up for these dialogues.

My husband was Southern Baptist. He slowly came to the knowledge that the Catholic Church held the truth he had found lacking and been seeking. He crossed the Tiber this last Vigil. My son-in-law is now in RCIA and will cross the river this next Vigil. Praise God for true teaching, dialogue and open minds.😃

Why would it just be a “ploy”?
