Maybe “ploy” was the wrong word. He (the Southern Baptist Preacher) just mentioned that disagreeing with Luther in a Catholic Church would probably be popular. His work and scholarship on the topic were first rate.

No one has “won”. Both of these gentlemen have become through this process very close friends. They intentionally do not try and “win” or “score” points. The best way for you to understand how exceptional these discussions have been would be to go to www.Paul2000.com and listen to the discussions yourself. Try listening to the Question and Answer first as that will give you a feel for how they interact with one another. It has been great stuff and a great blessing to both Protestant and Catholic attendees.

Sorry for the oversensitive reaction!

Baptists do disagree with Luther on a lot of things. I’m glad that this guy recognizes the fact.

When I was in grad school, I sometimes had to explain to Baptist seminary students (the seminary was primarily Methodist, but very ecumenical, and many moderate or liberal Baptists attended because the local Baptist seminary had become too conservative for their liking) why the Reformers believed in infant baptism. They often said something like “But how does this square with justification by faith?” And it was hard to convince them that the Reformers didn’t necessarily understand justification by faith the same way they did. For Luther, in fact, justification by faith demands infant baptism.
