Thanks for the MP3, Lamentabili, very interesting!

D’you think after 2 months attending TLM, I would no longer attend the NO?
I feel torn between both masses, because the Pope agrees with both, and I wouldn’t give up one for the other.
I don’t understand the tear. I attend both the EF and OF. I might be disposed differently but I feel the two Masses complement each other.

Nobody says you have to…except some posters in the traditional sections of the forum. If the Church officially accepts it, what is the problem?

The priest’s advice sounds similar to Fr. Ripperger (FSSP) below.

www.sensustraditionis.org/webaudio/Sermons/Disk8/Challenge.mp3

There he challenges Catholics to attend the TLM exclusively for two months.

There is nothing wrong in advocating this as there is no obligation to attend the NO if there is a TLM available.
Worded that way, it is clear that this is advice. A personal opinion. As long as a priest offers such an opinion as an opinion and separates it from Church teaching, that is understandable. Then the listener can take it or leave it.

UltimaRatio:
And regardless of whose fault it is (bad Priest, negligent Bishops, or negligent Popes) the fact is that no one who has the authority to stop the abuses has done so… and who suffers as a result? The faithful. The faithful suffer as a result of the negligence of the Pope and Bishops whose job it is to protect the integrity of the faith and liturgy. When they fail in their duty, it is the faithful who suffer…

peary:
Then, as in the past, it is up to the Faithful not only to expect but to DEMAND of both their bishops and priests to do things the way they are supposed to be done. And there is also the collection plate…
What happens when the faithful DEMAND, and the Bishops IGNORE? And what happens when the faithful then write to Rome only to have thier letter delivered back to their Bishop who does nothing? That has been the common pattern for the past 4 decades.

This doesn’t solve the problem; and when the problems don’t get solved, who suffers? The faithful. They are the ones who lose the faith, or else have their faith seriously corrupted Have you ever heard the following saying of Pope Pius X? I don’t think he made it up, but it is usually attributed to him. Here it is:

Pope St. Pius X: A saintly Priest will have a fervent parish; a fervent Priest will have a devout parish; a devout Priest will have a luke-warm parish; and a luke-warm Priest will have a bad parish."

The parish is, generally speaking, always one degree lower than the Priest. If that is so, what kind of Parish (parishioners) will a Priest produce who is so bad that he can’t even follow the rubrics, and worse still is guilty of serious liturgical abuses? If the Bishops won’t correct such Priests (and they rarely if ever do) the faithul have a duty to flee that parish, just as they would a Leper.

Speaking for myself. I was drawn to the TLM right from the beginning, but I stayed with the parish where I went through RCIA. It was closer and convenient, and the mass there was conservative and solid. Towards the middle of this past summer there was a shakeup and both our pastor and PV left at once. During this time we started going to the TLM every week. When we went back to our old parish, we could barely sit through the mass at all for all the goofiness that was apparent. Just one example; the new pastor, while a very nice man and very sincere in his beliefs, could not restrain himself from ad-libbing the words of the consecration. We also went to a mass in another parish where the baby-boomer hippie priest said a mass that might as well be an amalgamation of all the “Spirit of Vatican II” stereotypes of the past 40 years. By mid-fall we’d changed our parish affiliation to the FSSP. We realize how blessed we are to have them so close by.
I’m curious what you mean by ad-libbing the words of consecration. What did he say?

Forgetting any personal preferences… just speaking to how things actually are.

Honestly, simply from personal experience… the overwhelming majority of N.O. masses I’ve ever gone to have each had something unorthodox in them.

And when it’s in the mass, it’s in the priest too. Because it’s the mass -he- offers.

The mass and church shows you who your priest is. What he cares about, and clues as to his formation.

Which in the past few decades, is often simply awful. Awful. Malformation. Terrible seminary.

You can have your cheap tabernacle off to the side, your casual liturgy, the bad sermons… or you can go traditional. If in fact, there is anywhere within any range, traditional – once you know about doctrine, discipline, and liturgy – you see what’s wrong, you see what’s good, and you go.

If you don’t know, you often simply accept all sorts of behaviors and statements and liturgies, because you don’t know anything is wrong. You talk about how good everything is and must be, but do not actually know what is good and what is not. You might be happier, in the immediate sense, blissfully ignorance, but… your soul at the same time might well be suffering greatly from this sort of lack of interest in what pertains to salvation.

So… for reliability… you go traditional mass because of it, and all that comes with it, if you at all can. If you can’t… you do the best with what you’ve got… depending on prudence and the individual situation.

I’m curious what you mean by ad-libbing the words of consecration. What did he say?
Oh, he just would go into this incredibly silly William Shatner-style thing.

“This. This. THIS … IS … is. Beyond a SHADOW of a DOUBT. The. Body. No more. No less. OF. Christ.”

That sort of thing. He didn’t say anything heretical, he just made it into a mockery. Unintentionally. The guy is a late ordination and he is very enthusiastic … overly so.

My husband and I were torn between collapsing on the floor in laughter and righteous indignation. We’d been attending the FSSP mass fairly regularly and my husband is one the one who finally suggested we just join their parish for good.

Catholics do not believe that suffering need result in a loss of faith. When we understand it suffering, it can sanctify us, or embitter us. The choice is ours.

Suffering doesn’t necessarily lead to the loss of faith. In fact, it is a great means of sanctification if it is handled properly. But willingly attending Mass where a Priest violates the rubrics and gives heretical or semi-heretical sermons,* is placing oneself in an occaision of sins*. The suffering I was referring to was that of effect - namely, losing the faith,or losing the sense of the faith. Don’t forget lex oranid lex credendi. This is not just a saying that Traditionalists made up. It is serious. They way a person prays will determine the way they believe. Watered down prayers produce a watered down faith; irreverence produced irreverence; heretical sermons enter the mind like a poision and unless a person is solid in their faith, they will do very serious harm; when the Sacrificial nature of the mass is downplayed, the person will have a distorted understanding of what the Mass is

I have one questions for you: Considering the poor catechesis of the past four decades, what happens when the blind follow the blind?

That is pretty serious. The mass was almost certainly invalid, which means transubstantiation did not take place, and the bread remained bread. Those who received communion received only bread, and nothing more. If the Priest tampers with the words of consecration he not only commits a public mortal sin, but it will almost always result in an invalid Mass. Not just illicit (illegal), but invalid, which means it was not a mass at all. It is truly incredible what takes place at Novus Ordo Masses. Congradulations on finding the FSSP!

Yes, when I mentioned this to the kind folks down in Liturgy and Sacraments they confirmed that for me. It made me very sad.

We’re very blessed to have them so close by, for sure.

I do not know these blind of who you speak or of the poor catechesis. However, it is good to know that we have the teaching of the Church in the form of the Catechism available freely to all. I think that will serve to anchor the future of the Church and keep in check, at least eventually, those who teach their own catholicism.

Thanks. Yes I’m sure. FSSP. The Mass was in a diocesan church building. The English Mass was at 9 a.m. beforehand.
I have seen the FSSP speak in similar terms too, especially in things which imply that the EF is superior to the OF.

I think some of the more dissident “traditionalist” ideologies are more contagious than we may have realized. Lord, have mercy.

And what catechism would that be? The Baltimore Catechism that I learned by rote as a kid? Does the Baltimore Catechism conflict with the CCC? Both of my kids went to Catholic school. Their catechesis was not what I got. My brother’s catechesis was not the same as I got at my Catholic boy’s high school in just four years. As someone who has helped prepare high school kids for Confirmation at my parish, it was not the fault of my kid’s schools. None of the kids got the catechesis I got. Not everything is the same all over the Catholic world my friend.

It pleases me to see that your parish is doing things according to the “book” Would that it would be everywhere.

It is available everywhere. That was my point. Even if one has a teacher that is all over the map on what the Church teaching, the fact that a norm exists and is easily available to all will serve as an anchor.

Bebe,

There’s only one way to find out. Take the challenge! 😉

As for the OF, I don’t think you have to worry about hurting the Pope’s feelings by not going. The Pope has criticized it in the past even going so far as to call it a “banal on the spot product” as a Cardinal. And he was talking about the Latin promulgated version. The NO is a valid form of Mass, however rarely can one find a Mass of Paul VI done in the manner which VCII forsaw (Latin, Gregorian Chant, ad orientam, etc.). Most NO Masses on the ground level are ICEL Masses which include a very poor translation and add in elements nowhere called for by VCII (EM’s, folk/ rock music, holding hands, altar girls, priest facing people, communion in the hand) plus who knows what other innovations.

The great thing about the TLM is that it has stood the test of time, produced countless Saints, and you know what to expect every time. You can’t go wrong.
Thanks for your message. 😉 I didn’t know the Pope had said such thing. I know not why many people in the OF never talk about the Pope. It is a taboo subject.

However, what do you mean by enumerating all these elements not called for by VCII??? Do you mean holding hand _ or kissing, like in many parishes in France _ altar girls, the priest facing us, communion in the hand wasn’t suggested by the Council??? I didn’t get something.
I’ve always been told taking Communion with the hands was valid.
And what’s wrong with having the Blessed Sacrament (tabernacle) off to the side?

I can’t believe it… I used to go to an OF Mass where the priest’s habit was to change orations and so on… 😊 He didn’t want dreariness in his church, but I always switched off during his sermons because he repeated himself. What about if the priest says *“his friends” *instead of *“his disciples”? *I heard it quite often.

Is it really true that a slight change can make mass invalid??? So does it mean we really don’t receive the Body of Christ?? So what happens? Is it a sin? Does it harm the soul? :(:(😦

Exactly. None of these practices are called for in Vatican II.

Communion in the hand is currently permitted/ tolerated, however the standard means of reception in the Latin Rite remains on the tongue.

Vatican II nowhere called for the tabernacle to be moved from its regular place of prominence on the altar. The Tradition of the Church as well as many Roman documents stress the importance of having the tabernacle as the central focal point in our churches.

adoremus.org/Interoecumenici.html#anchor36495058

Inter oecumenici (1964)
Tabernacle in the middle of altar or in another part of the church
54. "The Eucharist is to be reserved in a solid and secure tabernacle, placed in the middle of the main altar or on a minor, but truly worthy altar, or else, depending on lawful custom and in particular cases approved by the local Ordinary, in another, special, and properly adorned part of the church
.

Some priests bent on diminishing the external signs of the Real Presence in their church buildings began removing the tabernacle from the churches all together and putting them in almost hidden “side chapels” or in a corner or off to the side, overshadowed by a huge presider’s chair where the tabernacle (Our Lord) used to be, making themselves the focal point of the church building.

Rome later ruled (due to the hardness of these priests’ hearts) that the tabernacle did not have to be in the center but it should at least be in a place of prominence in the church.

'83 Code of Canon Law
“The tabernacle in which the Most Holy Eucharist is reserved should be placed in a part of the church that is prominent, conspicuous, beautifully decorated, and suitable for prayer.”

The CCC is available but that is not what the kids are being taught. I help teach high school kids at my parish in preparation of their being Confirmed. Many of them, like my sons, have been in Catholic schools since they were kids. They are not being taught the norm, pnewton.

It exists, pnewton, but it does not mean that our kids are being taught like I was taught with the Baltimore Catechism. Anything but. You can have the CCC existing out there but unless the kids are being taught it…********

People who are saying that this priest has contradicted the Catholic faith or said something which implies disobedience to the Roman Pontiff are just plain wrong.

Although I don’t totally share his views, I think his is a legitimate position. Given the general state of the Ordinary Form in his area, he may have felt it best to issue a blanket warning against attending. This is not to say that sacrileges and abuses occur at all Masses celebrated in the ordinary Form, only that it is best to avoid this form of Mass because such things are so common. This is the same reason you wouldn’t have wanted to spend your time in a hospital during the Swine Flue outbreak - you’re more likely to contract it.

Again, I don’t entirely agree (in some cases, it is quite proper to attend the ordinary form, and people should use their own discretion), but I think it is a legitimate position which priests are entitled to hold.
