This very dumb, A muslim school would not make the same generosity. This is hypocritcal on so many levels.

Catholic U is a Christain institution. If there is ever concession made to this person then I will be very scared for the future of our faith in the USA. Also what is this person doing going to school there?

The CUA Affairs says in the article:
“Catholic University is committed to the religious freedom and dignity of all members of its community,” said Nakas. “This includes the dozens of Muslims who come to the University for its academic excellence as well as its demonstrated history of outreach and dialogue to people of all faiths.”

The kick here is from the law suit from the Muslim student group.

So I go back to my original question…can’t private schools exercise better caution/discernment when accepting a student? Sure…be Catholic…be universally loving but add that incoming students must take what they see or get out?

And so…the Catholic University is Accused of Discriminating Against Muslims.
cuatower.com/news/2011/10/20/university-accused-of-discriminating-against-muslims/

I hate to sound naive but can’t private colleges determine who they will teach within their walls? My impression was that private schools have the right to determine who is in and who is out.
Unfortunately, religious Imans talk in YouTube freely in killing non-Muslims as the right thing to do. I could not believe my ears. (click to hear) Maybe we are too soft on Muslims.

He doesn’t go to school there. He is a law professor at a rival university, and he prides himself on being a gadfly.

Hm? Why do you believe that to be the case? According to the article in the first post, the lawsuit is being filed by “John F. Banzhaf III, the George Washington University Professor of Public Interest Law.”

And according to a press release from Banzhof, Catholic University of America does not allow Muslims to form a student group, which is one of his complaints.
The fact that the university apparently lied about its reason for discriminating against Muslim students – claiming that it should not be sponsoring a student organization which is not Catholic, while all the time sponsoring an organization for Jewish students – shows its “consciousness of guilt,” knowledge that discriminating against Muslims but not against other religious groups like Jews was wrong, argues Banzhaf.
He notes further that the denying Muslim students the opportunity to form a student group on campus could hardly be based upon any fundamental Catholic doctrine since Georgetown University not only has such a Muslim student group, but also provides its Muslim students with a separate prayer room and even a Muslim chaplain.

I don’t even think it matter of being too soft with Muslims as much as CUA standing firmly for what they believe and keeping a rigid watch as students apply. Suppose I sent my son/daughter to CUA for a good education with the hopes of all that go along with being among the most solid Catholic schools in the country…low and behold this lawsuit pops up.
I wouldn’t be very happy. I’d wonder why CUA admin. wasn’t being more careful about student admission/relations policies.

Gadfly or not…Banzhaf is representing a small population of Muslims at CAU. My original question: Can’t CUA…a private school be more discerning about who they choose to teach? I’m wondering too…can’t private schools have admission policies that safeguard them from this sort of lawsuit?

Sure you can be respectful to other faiths such as Protestants (despite being heretical) and Judiasm.

But Islam is not religions it is a murderous cult. No respect should be given to them at THE Catholic University of America.

This is pretty hateful language and not inline with Catholic teaching. You may want to follow the lead of our Holy Father on this one, who regularly meets with Muslim leaders and shows much respect to them.

It is also important to note that calling Islam a murderous cult is an American/Western way of thinking, not a Christian way. We as Americans have no understanding of their culture and it reflects an almost laughable lack of understanding and education in the way of Muslim practices and beliefs. Most of what we see in the media is a reaction to us trying to impose our beliefs, which are quite at odds with religion in general, on their culture and it is only a small percentage of the Muslim world.

In terms of the jihad and threats against non-Muslim religions, the reality is that this is a continuation of OT thinking. Remember what Joshua’s commands were when they entered into the promised land. We think it barbaric now, but they haven’t heard the good news so they are stuck in the past. So instead of insulting them, which helps no one, why don’t you spread the good news.

God Bless.

I’m not ure that any Muslims have aligned themselves with him. From what we have seen of his behavior earlier this year with regard to the proposal to return to single-sex dorms, Banzhaf sees himself as a champion of anyone he considers oppressed.

And I rather suspect he simply wants to cause CUA problems, given that his opposition to single-sex dorms is unlikely to bear fruit.

OchsFam, I want to remind you what is going on in Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Europe…boy I can just keep on going can I. Also don’t forget what the so called prophet Muhammad said in his time. Go study that, he was all about spreading Islam by the sword. And he was a pedophile too. Hateful…I’d say more like facts.

The angel that Muhammad spoke too was Satan in disguise. That is what St Paul tells us in Galations yes? That even an angel who does not preach the Gospel is cursed. The Devil knew he would be a tool to spread hate and war throughout the world for centuries. Islam has been one of Satan’s great weapons to take on Christianity. Of course God has already won through his greatness and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we just need to enter into His victory and not into this feeling of death, submission, and slavery which is what the Islam theology says.

To be clear, I am not suggesting that Islam is correct, nor am I suggesting that Muhammad was a good person. Spreading Islam by the sword is not much different than it was in the OT, we just have a different perspective on this since the coming of the Messiah.

I am not disagreeing that Islam is of the devil, but we must distinguish between the sin and the sinner. You cannot hate the sinner, it is un-Christian. The point I was making is that you are attacking a group of people, the most of which do not practice the sin that you are aiming at. You say we cannot show respect to a Muslim, but that is not correct.

I think that bringing up Muhammad and his message is moot unless we are talking about the authenticity (or lack there of) of the religion itself. Every person deserves respect, even if you disagree with them.

God Bless.

Your views are at variance with the CCC. It is Catholic Faith that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

No. Our faith was built on the fact that our Lord died on the cross for our sins. Islam denies that Christ died on the cross or that he is the son of God. They call that blasphemy. We catholics worship Jesus. He is God. Muslims call him a prophet. Christianity says that there were no more prophets after John the baptist which leads us to the point that Mohamed was a fause prophet. We call God “Our father” . Muslims call themselves slaves of God. There is a huge difference between the loving fatherly God that we worship and the God that Muslims worship. Also if Catholics worship the same God as Muslims, why doesnt the Pope in his visits just declare that we are muslims as well?

I hate everything that Islam stands for. Not the people believe me. I hope that every one of them will escape this slavelike existance that they live because of it. Catholic U should never ever get caught in the PC trap that Catholic-In-Name-Only schools have fallen into.

The official allegations claim that CUA, “does not provide space – as other universities do – for the many daily prayers Muslim students must make, forcing them instead to find temporarily empty classrooms where they are often surrounded by Catholic symbols which are incongruous to their religion,” according to a press release on PRLOG.com.

You mean  that Muslims have to see a crucifix at the Catholic University?!!
The horror!!!
It must cause untold mental distress for them to view such things…

It’s in the Catechism that we worship the same God. I don’t have the number.

Certainly, Catholicism is true and we follow God in the Trinity- as He really is, still Muslims worship the same God, but in an imperfect manner.

Do you not hold the faith of the Catechism of the Catholic Church?

That doesn’t mean that Islam did not get started from the devil. The person you quoted didn’t say that Muslims don’t worship the same God - but maybe I missed that in a previous post or within that post cuz I’m tired.

I do not think it wrong for a Catholic University, Catholic College, Catholic High School or any Catholic school to discriminate. In fact I think it is about time Catholics stand up for what our universities, colleges, schools are all about. Catholic institutions are about teaching the basics. what the students are going to college for, and teaching about Catholic subjects when appropriate. We are getting soft. We are getting spineless. We are not following the Church.

Also I think we should discriminate more. We should only allow Catholic teachers to teach in all Catholic institutions. If people want to attend a Catholic institution, it should be mandatory for ALL students to go to Mass everyday, and ALL students where and when appropriate should learn more about the bible and the Church being the one true Church and how it is the one true Church. If new students are not willing to attend Mass or certain subjects, then they should attend another institution. That is how I feel about discrimination in Catholic institutions.
