Notice:

This thread is about Catholic Universities, not about the V-Monologues (which is how it is frequently billed by those who produce the play - excellent article by a Catholic University student newspaper here).

Please stick to the thread’s topic - Catholic Universities. If the V-Logs are to be further discussed, please start a new thread. Any further posts discussing this topic on this thread will be deleted.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

just noticed the moderator’s post on the thread to discontinue the discussion of the V-Monologues here… I’ll start a new thread.

John Higgins:
My wife got her PhD at St. Louis University. That fine institution and its Jesuit campus ministry are the prime reason my wife became Catholic. It’s a fine school.

John
I dunno. My son, a high school sophomore, is being courted by St. Louis. I did some research and discovered that they have an ardent active pro-GLBT program. That was enough to cross that school off our list. His dad and I have given him excellent tools to withstand the potential attacks on his faith, and his elementary and high school education have been at orthdox Catholic schools that are fully in line with the Magisterium. It’s one thing if attacks on his faith come from outside forces, but to be attacked by one’s own supposedly Catholic university can be overwhelming and confusing.

He’s planning on pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering and will probably have to attend a non-Catholic university. (The Air Force Academy is his first choice.)

Are there any good Catholic colleges in or near New York City?

Aren’t there colleges were you don’t actually have to attend, like the John Hopkins University? You take on-line courses or something. Distance Education is what they called it on the website. Are there any Catholic colleges that do this?

You may wish to consider Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. There is also a seminary located on campus. I believe they have an association with EWTN , it was mentioned in a homily during Mass one morning not long ago. Our oldest daughter is a freshman at the Mount. When we visited the campus we were amazed to see so many pro-life bumper stickers, the co-eds are polite. Most importantly our daughter participates in the Mass. The chaplains take an interest in the students and are very accessible. 👍

I think I’d die if I did that.

I wouldn’t be too fussy about wether they have a group of pro-GLBT people, virtually every university will, you are all really lucky to have Catholic Universities, remember that… 🙂

Based on the following article, which I saw yesterday, I’d avoid DePaul at all costs. Sounds like there is some terrible evil trying to overtake that institution.

Being a theater major it’s not likely my daughter would have any interest whatsoever in this course…sounds like something for political science majors and believe me, they already think like that so it’s no big deal to provide a forum by which they could further delve into the issues and actually discuss them with some of those who promote the ideals (right or wrong).

YingYangMom,

Send your daughter to an instiution where she shall receive a good education, not where you know she will meet only conservative Catholics (if there is such a place).

Do not jeopardise your child’s education to ensure that she is not confronted by people who are less orthodox. If your daughter has been raised well in the faith, then surely other peoples views about the church teachings do not matter. A persons faith shall take up their lifetime, their time at university shall take 3 years 🙂

That has always been the plan, thanks for the support.
My kids are public school educated which motivated me to truly focus on teaching them the faith - not only cognitively, but how to live it every day in a secular environment. They’ve done very, very well standing up for Catholicism all along the way even when most of their friends are protestant or of no religion at all.

DePaul has an excellent theater arts program which is what caught my daughter’s attention. It was in visiting the website that I noticed it was also a Catholic institution. While I’ve prepared the kids well to face secular thinking, I have not focused on having them constantly exposed to false Catholic teaching/lifestyles so that’s why I was asking about DePaul’s ‘catholicity’…if it turns out they are magesterium, I can relax a bit.

If it turns out they are somewhat against the magesterium then I would be faced with how best to prepare her from now until then (she’s 15) spiritually so that not only would her loyalty to the magesterium hold, but she would also be able to affect change from within the institution to make it a better place while she’s there.

If the school is that far off the mark of Catholic teaching then I may not be willing to have her exposed to it for 4-6 years…it may be too risky for her own salvation to subject her to that regardless of how good the program is. There are other excellent theater programs in the area.

YinYangMom:
Well, since I’m not one to beat about the bush I went ahead and emailed the DePaul Central info people there. My goal was to ask the right question without tipping them off which type of Catholics we are (don’t know if I accomplished it):

My daughter is considering your University for the Theater Program, Communications (radio or journalism) and Study Abroad (France).

In visiting the website I was pleased to see the University is Catholic but as a Roman Catholic and an alum of The University of San Diego I’ve learned the title “Catholic” can be applied to ‘orthodox’ or ‘non-orthodox’ teachings, which mean the campus and programs project union with the magesterium or partial union.

So I hope you don’t mind my asking: Overall, what are the positions of DePaul University on the following moral issues:

Abortion
Euthanasia
Embryonic stem cell research
Human cloning
Homosexual Marriage
Contraception

I look forward to your response as I continue to browse your website to learn more about this excellent univeristy option for my daughter.

Thank you.

Anyone willing to place a wager on whether or not I get a response? 😉 *
OK… I’m dying to know… did you get a response? What did they say?

Remember, Georgetown also is the school that actually had a controversy over having crucifixes in classrooms.

What has happened to some of these so-called “Catholic” universities?

NO! Surprise, surprise…but it was close to the semester break so I plan to send a follow up request in a couple of weeks when I know the campus will be fully staffed.

I’m confused…what’s Niagara?

My daughter’s interested in DePaul University’s Theater Program in Illinois.

Did I miss something?
Hello YinYangMom, I am married to a former Goodman Theatre (Depaul Drama Dept.) student. It is a world renown school for theatre and that is great if you want a theatre career but very scary if you want to remain Catholic. I was there in the 80’s and there was no hint of Christianity let alone Catholicism.
Maybe things have changed. Good luck with your decision.
