Being familiar with the Archdiocese of Detroit. I am not surprised.

I don’t understand how Catholic universities could have degraded to this point. Some of them are more hostile to Catholicism than public universities.

again, this is not news, just an on-going situation at UD-Mercy, the only Catholic college in Detroit with a worse record is Marygrove (don’t know what they are calling it these days). If I had gone to UD where I had a scholarship, instead of Michigan State, I am quite sure I would have lost my faith, judging by my contempories who went there.

And the nuttiest thing is that they are the most expensive university in Detroit that I know of. I was thinking of taking Latin in the evening there, but the price and the fact that the Lodge is closed for reconstruction nixed that idea.

Madonna University down in Livonia is much more orthodox and is much more reasonably priced.

U of D is a Jesuit school, not associated with the Archdiocese of Detroit.

I am embarrassed to say I am a grad of U of D. I long ago cut ties with it. It’s been ultra-liberal since I was there in the 1970s, and I was too naieve back then to know what a dangerous place it was. If my parents knew half of the garbage I was taught they would have been mortified – and my father (also an alum) was the university’s treasurer!

The only good thing that came out of that place was my marriage (I married my college sweetheart).

Right now we’re college shopping for our son who is a junior at an excellent orthodox Catholic high school. Needless to say, U of D is NOT on our list!

Don’t be embarrassed thann. We all have our past and its what we are doing now that counts. Your son is very lucky to have good parents who know what is going on these days

I called Barbara. Schirmer (VP) 3rd supervisory level up from the 2 profs.
Her secretary said, when I voiced my opposition to these 2 was, "At the University level, there’s something called, “academic freedom”.
I responded, “There’s something called, the Roman Catholic Faith, which trumps academic freedom”.

That’ll give you an idea of the attitude throughout the university, all the way to the top executives.

Keep calling. Annoy them to death.

I’m not embarassed to be a UDM grad, as I never crossed paths with those profs and received an excellent education in biochem, biology, and chemistry that helped me to land wonderful jobs in research and a full scholarship to earn my Ph.D. at a prestigious university. I also encountered so many wonderful orthodox Catholic faculty in those departments: profs who faithfully served in their parishes and were glad to do so, and had no qualms discussing faith and parish life with their students. I am however considering writing to Fr. Stockhausen and explaining that this alumna will not be donating any money to the Legacy campaign as long as the university continues to support the pro-abort ethics profs.

(Puzzleannie: I too spent some time at MSU. I don’t know if you’ve attended the student parish in E. Lansing, but it is far more of a travesty than anything I have heard of from UDM. Gov. Granholm is a parishoner there, if that tells you anything. Anyone I’ve ever met from that parish is very supportive of contraceptive use and many are pro-choice. Add that to the party atmosphere of the campus, and you have some of the many reasons why I transferred to UDM even with a tuition scholarship at MSU. I think my soul would have been in much more trouble had I stayed.)

Yep, St. John’s in E. Lansing is a real trip. That’s why I walked the extra 1/2 half mile to St. Thomas Aquinas each Sunday. It’s a MUCH better parish. (I’m an MSU grad)

My father is a UD grad ( but that was back in the 50’s where “Philosophy” meant Augustine and Aquinas in reverent tones. Two of my brothers went there in Electrical Engineering, so they didn’t encounter this junk.

That’s where my problem was – I was in the thick of things. I was a religious studies major in the 1970s. This is when U of D really started going downhill. Unfortunately I was young and was caught up in the excitement of the whole feminist/antireligion/free love mess.

I really wish I’d studied engineering or the sciences so I could have avoided such dangerous silliness.

I’m glad God waited patiently for me to find the right path some years later.

That’s where I would differ from SeekerJen. St. Thomas Aquinas at MSU was great for my spirituality. They had a great Scripture study for the college students. 👍

St. John’s, the official “Student Parish” is a real mess though.

Here is the University’s “Women’s Studies” Resource website

udmercy.edu/womensstudies/links.php
Let me take a guess of what Womens Studies is about:

Men are Bad.
Women are victims.
Abortion good.
Lesbianism good.
Christianity bad.
Capitalism/Democracies bad Socialism/Marxism good.
etc.

Why dont they just call it Liberalism Studies?

What does one do with a degree in Women’s Studies? Work for the ACLU or teach our kids more of this junk?

Yup, I wish I’d found St. TA sooner. I discovered it during my last semester at MSU, after the transfer paperwork had already gone through and after I’d met with my advisor at UDM. It wouldn’t have changed things, though; I left MSU for many other reasons as well. But St. TA did make my last semester much more pleasant. I just wish I’d known about it when I was a freshman. Only St. John’s advertises on campus.

Needless to say “academic freedom” doesn’t mean poor taste insults or childishness.

Nor does ‘academic freedom’ mean a professor can say ANYTHING she happens to believe and mandate the students hold to it on penalty of getting poor grades.

If the professor teaches economics but happens to be a Marxist and some students presents the historical and factual case proving that Marxist economic theory and praxis leads to MORE poor people and injustice, not less, ‘academic freedom’ would not cover the professor giving the student an F just because she disagrees with his conclusions.

Too many professors get away with too much buffoonery by hiding behind ‘academic freedom’ rather than having the courage of their convictions to argue for their position in a civil, calm, mature fashion as one would expect from any institution of ‘higher learning’.

As it is, the best solution to such childishness is for someone to put up a counter sticker saying “Catholics just say NO to any sex outside of a Pro-Life marriage!” 🙂

That’s what the WS class was all about that I started to take at Oakland University back in the mid 80’s. I got out as fast as I could, complained to the department, and took Industrial Sociology instead.

And the sad part about it is that the study of how women’s rolls have changed through history from an objective perspective has the potential to be a really interesting class! Sadly, the liberal feminists get into the mix and it all slants so far to the left we are sliding off and hanging by our nails to keep any semblance of objective commentary at all.

One more thing for Detroit to be proud of I suppose. 😦

It’s sad that they’ve excommunicated themselves, sadder still for the murdered little ones.
