“Considers”?? I thought, it was a done deal now, they voted to ban. Good for them…

Sounds good.

@c1949, why did you add the word “considers”?

Okay, I see (in the last paragraph) the university administration hasn’t carried it out yet. I would assume they are checking the legality and technical feasibility first.

I can’t imagine that this is a matter of legality. Banning sites is pretty common practice in work places, and it is also already done by some universities. Technically, I can’t imagine their IT people don’t know how to do it within a short amount of time.

Okay. Work with me here…
On April 1, the SGA [Catholic University of America’s Student Government Association] called on university administrators to effect the ban…
Maybe the administration wants to make sure it’s not an April Fools prank.

But more seriously, how many days would one expect it takes for something like this to percolate through the university’s system? There are a few steps, and several people involved, and it’s not the only thing the university staff needed to do that week. The student senate voted on April 1. The news article was posted April 5. I would not rush to judgment.

I’m not really judging the university. I’m just saying that I don’t think this is a matter of legal or technical hurdles.

Never underestimate the ability of bureaucracy to make simple things take a very long time!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my 4 years of college…

Part of the reason I went straight to industry and not grad school is because it took so long for them to process my move into the grad program that I didn’t know I was accepted until the first week of class. By that time, I already had a job.

There were also a couple colleges I just never attended because they didn’t let me know I was accepted until like two weeks before the start of the semester. By that time, I had already gone to orientation for the university I did attend.

At my local public library, there are content-blockers on most of the public computers, and, the two pc’s which are not blocked are in like the most conspicuous locations where everyone could see what sites are being visited.

My point being that there is no technical hurdle to implementing such filtering, except perhaps for the skill of the system administrators.

why would they ask for the ban?? after all this is a natural thing nothing bad in this…

I am not sure what you mean by natural. There is nothing natural about porn, and it is harmful to everyone involved.

after all this is a natural thing
Assuming that you aren’t trolling…

This is occurring on the Internet. There is nothing natural about it.

If you’re just referring to the desire, though, then that doesn’t necessarily make it good. Wildfires are natural. Floods are natural. Diseases are natural. That doesn’t automatically make all of them good.
