No. This is a very common lie by Roman Catholics. Our sole authority is the word of God.

Christian pastors and preachers and teachers are subject to it’s authority. We are not arbiters over it.

My pastor will be the first one to tell you that you should never take his word before you first confirm that it lines up with scripture. I tell all of those in my classes and when I preach the very same thing.

OK. So we have a verse in which Jesus tells Peter that He’s going to build His church on Peter’s confession. It says nothing at all about a pope of any kind.

If you look at the Old Testament references to the passing of keys it always meant an assignment of authority (with succession). The first century Jews understood this well as can be confirmed by even a cursory perusal of the writings of the Early Church Fathers. The early Church CLEARLY understood the primacy of Peter’s chair. You can read some here newadvent.org/fathers/

Remember, the Bible came from the Catholic Church. It is a part of Sacred Tradition. The Church, with all her sacraments and liturgy, existed for decades before one sentence of the New Testament was written and centuries before that same Church would decide which of her precious writings belong in what we know today as the Bible.

When you ask the question ‘which bible is right Catholic or Protestant’. You need to be more spefic. Within Catholicism and Authodoxy which accounts for 90% of all Christendom, there is ONE Bible. Within Protestantism there was at the last count 78,000 different interpretations of Sacred Scripture.

As a Catholic Apologist, I often get asked by Protestants about the differences, but to be frank, there ar so many, more and more are coming into existence every week, that it is impossible for any Catholic Apologist to keep up with them all!

Amen–my non-denom minister says the same thing. You said you were baptist right. Look 2 protestant churches that agree . I guess that knocks the number down to 32,998. YEAH:thumbsup:

I think the biggest question here is Truth. What is it? Where does it lie? One of the first times I began to question the FULLNESS of my faith was when I asked this question: “Why do we Lutherans believe our faith and our theology is right? Because the Lutheran church only began in the 16th century. Was all of Christianity before that just plain wrong, but one German monk 1500 years after Christ lived happened to get it right?” And Luther was a Catholic! For me, it is a question of faith. Do I put my faith in the Catholic Church that has been around for 2000 years or a non-denominational Christian faith? More aptly put, do I trust the interpretation of the Bible that the Catholic Church has professed and upheld for centuries? Or the way the minister of a non-denominational Christian Church in my community decides to interpret scripture? Because there is no binding continuity of Biblical interpretation between non-denominational churches. That is why I have a hard time saying “All I need is a Bible and my brain, and I can interpret scripture myself.” I am still on the fence, but I think it is clear which way I am leaning, considering all of this… and more…

And protestant theology constantly evolves - they just make it up as they go. The protestants of today hold beliefs that would shock the reformers. The “fundamentalist” ideas are only a hundred years old.

Because that is how God wanted it. God gives us different gifts, some are preachers, teachers, singers, etc. The teachers and preachers were called to teach us simple people about the bible. I have to say there are some Scriptures in the bible that are clear to me without being taught. I know that to be the Holy Spirit teaching me. The ECF’s disagreed with Scripture. Other people have pointed out that people within the CC have also intrepretated it differently. I think it is just human nature. I have heard priests disagree, so even they dont completely follow the Pope.
