Catholic vs. Protestant Ten Commandments

I went to my bride to be’s home church on July 4, and the priest used the non traditional (for Roman Catholics anyway) numbering. She didn’t catch it, but it made me kind of chuckle.

They are called the 10 commandments in the Bible, but there are two different lists that could be seperated out to more than 10. Basically, both systems are orthodox.

Enough said !!! Look people are not idiots as you and your church think. 99% of Catholics that I know (and beleive me they are many) do not know about the second commandment, and why you ask? Because the Catholic church doesn’t want people to know about it for it is doing exactly the opposite of it. What a coincidence that second commandment was canceled!
In fact, what you said doesn’t make sens at all. Read it again and laugh.
Enjoy your new numbering system!

Sorry if I seemed aggressive but the fact that the Catholic church is re-numbering the Ten Commandments is just unacceptable.
Whether or not you change the listing is insigificant. The Catholic Church canonized the Bible in 397 (and hasn’t touched the canon list since), and still holds these two versions of the 10 commandments as authoritative because it’s in scripture. We may extract different numberings for purpose of Catechising, but we still acknowledge that you can’t bow to some graven image as if it is a god.

Ah, my topic was trolled. Oh, well. I don’t suppose Homer will return with an adequate response?
Doubtful. Homer doesn’t usually return once he’s dropped a few bombs and stirred things up. I think maybe he gets frustrated when people start spouting off and saying silly things to him - ya know…silly things like the TRUTH!

I was curious so I checked our a couple official sites to see what the ‘difference’ was. I didn’t see one…

Catholic: (from usccb.org/catechism/text/entiretoc1.htm)

· “You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.”

· You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain

· Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy

· Honor your father and your mother

· You shall not kill

· You shall not commit adultery

· You shall not steal

· You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

· You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ***, or anything that is your neighbor’s

· You shall not covet . . . anything that is your neighbor’s. . . . You shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ***, or anything that is your neighbor’

Lutheran: (from lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=2143)

· You shall have no other gods

· You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

· Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy

· Honor your father and your mother

· You shall not murder

· You shall not commit adultery

· You shall not steal

· You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor

· You shall not covet your neighbor’s house

You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Richard Lamb:
Neither.

There are three different numerations of the 10 commandments, The Jewish, The Catholic and The protestant. Each one is a summary what is in fact more than ten commandments.
This discussion has been on several boards over the years. I remember of having the commandments divided into as many as 13 to 15, based on each seperate thought, just to prove that you can’t say TEN and always divide it one way.

Kotton 👍

I don’t know anything about this website, but I did find there a chart comparing Jewish, Catholic and Protestant “versions” with this footnote:
*“Lutherans, oldest of the protestant denominations, agree with the Roman Catholic version, and NOT the
“Protestant” version.”

biblicalheritage.org/Bible%20Studies/10%20Commandments.htm

Also, a footnote of my own: the first commandment on this chart under the Catholic version is abbreviated. According to CCC, the full text goes on to forbid the graven images that the Protestant version uses for its second commandment.

Also, a footnote of my own to anyone who might say “see, Catholics DO leave it out”: the first commandment under the Catholic version is abbreviated. The full text, according to the CCC, goes on to include the “graven image” sentence that appears as the second commandment under the Protestant version.

How do the Jews devide the Ten Cammandments? I thought Protestants used the same system as the Jews.

The main difference is the first two:

Jewish
  1. I am the Lord your G-d who has taken you out of the land of Egypt.
  2. You shall have no other gods but me.
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your G-d in vain.
Protestant
  1. You shall have no other gods but me.
  2. You shall not make unto you any graven images.
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Catholic
  1. I, the Lord, am your God. You shall not have other gods besides me.
  2. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.

Bob, thanks what is the source document for this list? I showed a list, with links to offical Catholic and Lutheran sites clearly showing the exact same 10 commandments.

Did you see my post above? 😃

One more website I found with an excellent presentation of all three “versions” and the thinking behind each as to why the statements were grouped as they were.

templesanjose.org/JudaismInfo/Torah/tencommand.htm

From this website: “According to Jewish tradition, God gave the Jewish people 613 mitzvot (commandments)…The Aseret haDibrot (Ten Commandments) are not individual mitzvot (commandments); rather, they are categories or classifications of mitzvot. Each of the 613 mitzvot can be subsumed under one of these ten categories…”

An interesting read, and a good reference, I think.

Yes, I did see it thanks. Looked around it a little bit.

I was actually hoping for something more official. Maybe a Protestant official denom’s website that has what is being suggested? Or a different official Catholic site that has what was mentioned. As far as the Jewish representative is concerned, that would be cool for future info, but don’t stress yourself over finding one.

The link in my post #34 is a Jewish website, and gives some great background info from that perspective. It also deals with the way the commandments are grouped by Catholics and Protestants in a very objective way, I think.

I read a very good article on a Catholic website a few weeks ago, but can’t remember where exactly. It was in trying to find it that I came across the two websites I’ve posted here.

ah! I have not had the opportunity to check that one out, but I will.

How about the differences between Catholic and Protestants? Anything official? Or are the differences made by those desiring to cause a further divide?

Which one? I mean, jeez, with 30,000 or 40,000 denominations, how do you get an official anything?

The Vatican and the USCCB don’t post those kinds of apologetics documents. In my opinion, Catholic Answers, Jimmy Akins, and EWTN are all pretty reliably orthodox and consistent with Catholic teaching.

** Can you name 30,000-40,000 denominations? I can’t. I’ll give you a list, and see if you can come up with a different ten commandment list than what has been provided. If not, I might suggest refraining from such derogatory remarks.**
**Methodist; Lutheran, Southern Baptist, AOG, COG, COC, SDA, Presb, Episcapol, Independant Baptist, United Pentecostal. **

Thats not many, only 11. I know theres more out there, this is what came to my head. They all have ‘official’ websites. Have fun

What are you talking about? I pulled the list of commandments that the Catholic church agree on from http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/entiretoc1.htm) is that not official?
