The Roman Catholic Church is one of the 23 churches that makes up the Catholic Church. I am a member of the Byzantine Catholic Church, it is not Roman.
Dave,

I just want to extend both my apologies and appreciation since this bit of information caused me to dwell further into the subject to discover information which I was neither taught, had explained to me, or came out in either conversation or lectures; that of the exact differences between the Western and Eastern rite Catholic churches.

Thanks!

Thoughts?

A Lutheran friend thought he would point out to others that in the creed where we say ‘catholic’ that it wasn’t the “Roman Catholic Church”.

Thoughts? Comments?
Some Protestants like to call themselves “catholic”, since they realize that the apostles creed uses the term Catholic to refer to the Church. I like to respond to them with the words of St. Augustine:

“In the Catholic Church, there are many things which most justly keep me in her bosom. The consent of peoples and nations keeps me in the Church; so does her authority, inaugurated by miracles, nourished by hope, enlarged by love, established by age. The succession of priests keeps me, beginning from the very seat of the Apostle Peter, to whom the Lord, after His resurrection, gave it in charge to feed His sheep, down to the present episcopate. And so, lastly, does the name itself Catholic, which, not without reason, amid so many heresies, the Church has thus retained; so that, though all heresies wish to be called Catholics, yet when a stranger asks where the Catholic Church meets, no heretic will venture to point to his own chapel or house…” (Contra Epistolam Manichaei Quam Vacant Fundamenti, written 397 AD)

This statement still applies. They want to be called Catholic, yet ask them where the nearest Catholic Church is and none of them will not point to their own Church.

Dear Kevin:

Neil, our “Irish Melkite” poster here is also from Boston.

He has been an enormous source for many of us about any one or any thing Eastern (Orthodox and/or Catholic), having been an Eastern Catholic (Melkite) himself for the last 40 years or so after originally a Roman Catholic.(Of course, few Irish are not Roman Catholic!:yup: )

Just wait till he punches you on the nose!😃

Hello Amado,

Is Neil actually from Boston, or is he from one of the many outlying cities or towns?

He is definately a unique Boston Irish!

I would like to converse with him on what made him choose to be a Melkite Catholic. I know scores of Bostonians who left the Church because of Vatican II in the 60s, and then forced busing in the 70s, and more recently the Scandal in the Church.

Thanks!

Here’s an Irish Orthodox monk - me! 🙂

The Irish can be quite enchanted with Orthodoxy when they discover it. There are quite a few Irishmen in the States who have converted and are Orthodox parish priests. And the “Russian” Bishop of San Francisco is an Irishman, Bishop Tikhon FitzGerald. Also in Ireland itself Orthodoxy has moved up into 4th place and displaced Methodism. But no need to break into a sweat - the RCs are still way ahead in Ireland 🙂

Dear Kevin:

Neil will respond in due time!

I’m pretty sure, however, that he IS from/resides in Boston and he is THE “alter ego” of the Melkite Patirarch in the Newton Eparchy of the Melkites!

Thank you.

Newton is a small city of 85,000 located six miles outside of Boston and I found that particular Eastern Catholic Church on a website. I will just jump on the greenline and take the Cleveland Circle trolley from Park Street Station and attend a service there.

Thanx again!

Dear Fr. Ambrose:

I did not mean to discount YOUR presence at all!:o

Kevin and I were just so hung up on Roman and Eastern Catholicism, that’s all!😉

Why would he punch me in the nose? Just out of curiosity.
