I am looking for suggestions on books written in the Catholic perspective for weight loss, compulsive overeating, or dieting.

I don’t know of any books, but I’ve found Overeater’s Anonymous to be Catholic-friendly. I’m the only Catholic in our small OA group & in the 1 1/2 years I’ve been a member haven’t gotten any flack, or even mild disapproval.

The OA literature is also suitable for Catholics. OA.org.

Weight Watchers is a good weight loss program. It is not Catholic, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or any other religion.

If you want to do something that is more God related, you could say a rosary before you eat something that is not on your diet.

I’ve thought about going to OA a few times, as I have struggled with eating disorders (bulimia and compulsive eating, and in the past, anorexia). Has it been a positive experience overall?

It has. It’s good to be able to talk with people who understand, rather than just say, “Eat less & move more.” If it were that easy, I’d have done it years ago! The 12 Steps are the key to recovery - you really have to work them and take them seriously. At every meeting we say, “It works if you work it!”

One of my OA friends has dealt with anorexia, while for me the problem has been overeating & binging, and we’ve both found help with the 12 Steps.

You’re in California, so it might be easier to find multiple meetings. Go to as many as you can to find a good fit.

Thanks Bonnie, I appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut. There are a lot of meetings around here.

Another Catholic book on weight/body image is “Weightless” by Kate Wicker.

Just thought of another good book, though the author is Protestant, not Catholic.

“Made to Crave” by Lysa TerKeurst

I’d read the Catholic ones first; read this if you feel you need more.
