Catholic Youth Bible NRSV

The head of our RE in our parish uses this Bible and I was wondering if it is a good Bible to buy to use with my kids. I’ve heard so many negative things about all of the Catholic Bibles.

I wouldn’t recommend it, the inclusive language diminishes the prophecies of Christ.

For an easy to read Bible, I would suggest the New Jerusalem. It still has inclusive language, but not of the sort regarding God.

I would definitely recommend the Catholic Youth Bible because of the short articles which are contained among scripture which help readers to understand the context of which things are said, plus it gives a lot of background information and includes prayers that relate to certain parts of the bible.

The articles are divided into three types: Live it, Pray it, and Did you Know? and I think that they are very helpful when you come across them in the scriptures.

Also, at the beginning of each book of the bible it gives you some background information about the time that the book was written or anything that is helpful in understanding the context of the book.

It also has some great reading plans that take you through the Bible and allow for more of a Bible study.

I received my CYB from my church, and I just love it. I think that it’s a great bible to have.

In general, I really enjoy reading the NRSV
(New Revised Standard Version), but admittedly the
overuse of inclusive language can be annoying
to some readers. The NRSV does not use gender-neutral
language regarding God. It refers to God as HE.

As for the Catholic Youth Bible, are the writers of the
articles known to be orthodox Catholics?
If they are, then by all means get it.

I would also like to recommend the Fireside Youth Study Bible. You can get it in the Librosario edition, which is very nice to handle and read from. The website is: firesidecatholic.com/bibles_librosario.html

The inserted articles are very good, and there is a nice section on basic prayers.

It uses the NAB.

If you don’t like the NAB, then I certainly second those who recommend the NJB.

The NRSV does not use gender-neutral
language regarding God. It refers to God as HE.

Many prophecies regarding Christ are gender neutral in the NRSV. For example, the first psalm should read something like “Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly,” but the NRSV renders it “Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked.” It’s not even a prophecy anymore.
