I like both Catholics and freemasons. Is it possible to be both a Catholic and a freemason?

No.

The Church declared long ago that the Freemasons are a forbidden organization.

You may “like” them, I’m sure they are nice people, but what they teach and stand for is not compatible with Christianity at all.

A Catholic may not join the Masons.

There is one and only one Masonic group who is even attempting to fix the issues and be available to Catholics. Until that time, they are off limits as well.

There should be a bunch of threads on this topic.

According to Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) in 1983, any Catholic who becomes a freemason cannot receive communion.

We must not hesitate. The Freemasonry is the source of most of our evils - revolution, secularism, liberalism, abortion, to name just a few.

**DEATH TO FREEMASONRY! **

If you are interested in a men’s group then look into Knights of Columbus in your area.

The Freemasons accept multiple manifistations of God. Christianity does not. The official teaching on Jesus Christ is that he was not divine. He was a man only. There is one degree in the Scottish rite where the initiate denounces the salvation of Christ. If a police officer who is a mason knows of a fellow mason who is a criminal, he is obligated to keep the secret. If he has a warrent for him the officer must give the criminal a warning he is comming.

I know what I am talking about.

I think we miss the point when we talk about this rite or that rite, and this conspiracy theory or that one. The reason Catholics can’t be masons is because their founding principle is one of relativism. They’re wishy-washy, philisophically, which is un-Christian theologically.

Yes, I also agree with you. It seems to me that Freemasons are much the same as Jesuits in a way that they except multiple manifestations of God. And they are very democratic in their elective procedures, unlike Catholics in general. They also do really help each other in diffucult moment and I can put it in contrast with Catholics from whom personally I received no assistance at all. Freemasons are former Catholic monks themselves for they stem from The Knights of Temple, a Catholic Order that was slandered by bad men in Catholic Church and declared heretics.

As it appeared just a few decades ago, all acusations against them were lifted by independant Catholic committee apointed by Pope. And in 1983 they were not listed among heretics any more, no Catholic Church document since has ever described them as dangerous anti-Catholic organization and they were simply not mentioned at all if not for a letter by Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith issued by then Cardinal Ratzinger which unlawfully denied them communion and it contradicted all church canons which had more superior importance.

Many people among Cardinals in 1970s and early 1980s were Freemasons, even State Secretary of Vatican himself (Prime Minister) and what can be called as Minister of Finance (Head of Institute for Religious Affairs). What we have now is a second turn of the witch hunt, a detraction from Enlightenment path chosen by Church since Second Vatican Council, and persecution of the innocents.

Oh brother.

igor, I don’t mean to be rude but do a search, this topic has been done ad nausium.

please provide evidence of what you say here. I have never seen any thing that has been put out by the church that would make it ok to be a mason. Pope John Paul II with in the first year of his becoming Pope restated that Catholic where to have nothing to do with the Masons. It has never been and unless the Masons make drastic changes in their basic principals will never be ok for a catholic to be a mason. I is not a witch hunt it is a desire to keep the faithfully from being envolved in anti Christian groups.

If you are interested to get a full insight into the controversy of masons belonging to Catholic Church, you can see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freemasonry_and_Catholicism

Here it is written that new Canon Law 1983 does not prohibit freemasonry. And Canon Law is a supreme law of Catholic Church, as we can see from proclamation of Pope Jaun Paul II that issued it according to principles of Second Vatican Council: vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_constitutions/documents/hf_jp-ii_apc_25011983_sacrae-disciplinae-leges_en.html

You can read of Prime Minister of Vatican who was a member of masonic lodge: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Marie_Villot

Here you can read of masonic lodge that he was a member of: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda_Due

And here you can also read of Finance Minister of Vatican who was also a freemason and remained in this position up until 1989: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Marcinkus

You need to read the actual cannon Law. Being a member in good standing of the FreeMasons removes your ability to receive Communion. This is from the wiki site you posted
This was followed by the 1983 document Quaesitum est, issued by Pope John Paul II. To quote:
“The faithful, who enroll in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion…”[35]
This is the authoritative interpretation of the Vatican’s position on this subject.
Sorry, if you join, you are in a state of sin.

Personally, I do not care which Catholics did it. Judas betrayed JEsus, but that doesn’t make it right. Besides, isn’t Masonic membership supposed to be kept secret? However, for the sake of discussion, we will discuss

Both of the ones that you cited were a member of what Masons call a pseudo-Masonic lodge. IT was a criminal organization who committed theft. If you really want to hold them up as examples, then we can admit that Masons are a covert society bent on world domination.

You really are clueless and by the way since when was Wikipedia an authoritative Church document. Give me a break! If you really are a Catholic, which I doubt, then you would be reading Church documents so you can know what the teachings are. If Wikipedia is your only source of research and information you would be advised never to make any comments.

As for your comment on the 1983 Canon Code you demonstrate again how little you know. This apparent ommission was clarified in 1983 by Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) in a declaration from the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF). See below:

CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH

DECLARATION ON MASONIC ASSOCIATIONS

It has been asked whether there has been any change in the Church’s decision in regard to Masonic associations since the new Code of Canon Law does not mention them expressly, unlike the previous Code.

This Sacred Congregation is in a position to reply that this circumstance in due to an editorial criterion which was followed also in the case of other associations likewise unmentioned inasmuch as they are contained in wider categories.

Therefore the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. **The faithful who enrol in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.
**
It is not within the competence of local ecclesiastical authorities to give a judgment on the nature of Masonic associations which would imply a derogation from what has been decided above, and this in line with the Declaration of this Sacred Congregation issued on 17 February 1981 (cf. AAS 73 1981 pp. 240-241; English language edition of L’Osservatore Romano, 9 March 1981).

In an audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect, the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II approved and ordered the publication of this Declaration which had been decided in an ordinary meeting of this Sacred Congregation.

Rome, from the Office of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 26 November 1983.

Joseph Card. RATZINGER
Prefect

Every few months, we go through this. First it is one “Catholic Freemason,” then we get hit by a bunch of these kind of threads. Several new ones show up, some honestly trying to discuss, some not. Then it fades away again.

I know you did not address this to me. I’m just sitting next to you (figuretively speaking) and giving you an elbow nudge saying “the reason you have never seen anything put out by the Church that would make it ok to be a mason is because der ain’t nuttin” 😉

Igor where are you getting this stuff from Buddy? I used to BE A FREEMASON. I’ve been on the inside. I was a ritualist. A ritualist is not an official office, but it is someone that knows all or at least most of the ritual parts & can fill in any spot. I used to teach this stuff. I also taught masonic morals. … ok to have sex outside of marriage just not with a mason’s wife or daughter. Stuff like that.

I’m away from that stuff now.

In his document issued against Freemasonry John Paul II did not specify that he was using his infallible power. The last infallible decision was issued in 1950:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papal_infallibility

So, as you see 1983 Canon Code is of superior importance over this decision by Pope, because it was issued as a result of a decision of Second Vatican Council to make some improvements in Church Law. All decisions of Ecumenical Councils are infallible in any case.

It means that it is not obligatory for a Catholic to accept this decision of Pope and as Freemasonry is not banned by 1983 Canon Code you can be both a Catholic and a Freemason if you like. Are you sure that it was only “editorial ommitment” that caused Freemasonry not to be included in a list of anti-Church organizations? Maybe, a more deep insight of Council Elders into this problem was revealed to us by 1983 Canon Code. It was no more than a direct saying: Freemasonry is allowed.

I will try one more time to explain. If you are a member in good standing with the FreeMasons, cannon law prohibits you from receiving communion. There. Now, can you be a CAtholic in good standing and not go to communion?

If the Church wanted us to be allowed to join, she would say as much.

Are you joking?

I see nothing about freemasonry in this letter.
