Catholicism and the Gay Gene

For every one scientist, that you find that say that they found a gay gene, I can give you a hundred more that says there’s no such thing.

No, the Church has no teaching on this. Just that we are to treat each human person with dignity.
 
I’m not so sure. This sounds like new information. For the sake of argument, let’s say there is one. Can you answer my questions?
 
So the Catholic Church doesn’t take a position on whether the gay gene exists or not?

I had my hysterectomy in early December and there was no cancer!

Yes He has! My gyno made it sound by the way she was talking, that I had cancer and after a failed D&C, sent me to a gyno-oncologist to do the hysterectomy.
 
Is that because the Church doesn’t interfere in scientific affairs but leaves science to the scientists?
 
Not really. it’s because we care about the soul of the person and we believe that God doesn’t make mistakes.
Science, like everything else comes from God anyway, LOL
 
Despite some recent appearances, the Church does not manage her teaching by crisis. She teaches settled, eternal truths. No trends, no pop-culture, post-POP, K-POP, J-POP, Z-POP or soda pop.

All of those trends, as with shifting sands and winds, are constantly changing.
 
If God doesnt make mistakes, couldn’t one say His making a gay gene, (which the article is my OP, sounds like is possible,) is a mistake?

I sure the Church’s response is that regardless of the origin of gayness, a person is always in control of their behavior and should never engage in homosexual sex acts. If it is caused by a gene, then this is a perfect reason to “deny yourself” and “take up your cross” as Jesus said.

Whether or not being gay is genetic or has a genetic component is irrelevant to Catholic teaching. The homosexual inclination in and of itself is not sinful. It is the acts that are sinful. And acts are choices we make.

At most, there being a “gay gene” might reduce an individual’s culpability for engaging in the acts because their ability to freely consent is reduced. But then, that could be the case even if the cause is environmental.

In short, as Clare said, we treat the individuals with dignity and charity, as we ought to treat everyone.

So I generally approach these claims with a shrug. Maybe there is a gay gene. Maybe not. But it makes no practical difference.

Well, then you might say the same thing about those with Down syndrome, or alcoholics (many say that alcoholism has a genetic component).

That there exists disorder even in our genes is not God’s mistake but rather a consequence of the Fall. God permits it that greater good may come of it.
 
The Church is not an authority on science. Were the definitive cause of homosexuality to be determined, you will hear about it on the 7pm news. The Church is unlikely to tell scientists they’ve arrived at a wrong scientific conclusion - because it is not an authority on matters of science. Consternation may arise if science seeks to make statements about morality.
 
Do you agree that the Church has no position on whether there is a gay gene or not?
