this is simply false Catholic monks were able to read and write but they were not the only one, members of royalty could as well, merchants were able to send their chirldren to school etc…
Tell your Protestant friend to stop reading Jack Chick tracts and do some educational reading, reputable scholars on Church history. His remark is total ignorance.
