Seriously, do you ever watch mass in Rome on TV, and just see hundreds of cardinals or bishops and priests and other Catholic Church officials when they are covered in lavish matching colors and there is gold and statues and paintings EVERYWHERE, and you NEVER get scared?

When I look in those billion-dollar cathedrals covered with gold and statues, filled with “officials” all wearing the same white clothes and giant hats, I sometimes picture just hundreds of demons circling above them everywhere! I can’t help it. I can’t look at these giant masses and think “wow, so this really is religion.”

Is this really what God intended for? Catholic rankings in the Church and the clothes and the gold and statues AHHH it’s too much for me. I just can’t see God liking any of this!

However, today, I did see the Holy Spirit in two individuals. I was at my friend Josh’s house, and these two friends of his (one of them I knew about through a different friend) had come by to tell us that they were having a Church meeting or something today. When Titus, one of them, first walked in, the feeling was… different. When he shook my hand and said “hello” or whatever, I knew, also a little from his clothes, that he was religius. I could really sense God in him. I’ve never felt this way about anybody, except my friend Erica, who is non-denominational. She is living so much with God, that wild animals have jumped into her arms!

I feel so spiritual around these people, something that no Catholic has ever given me, even though much of my family is Catholic.

And here is what got me. When they learned that I was Catholic, Titus asked me, “Have you been saved?”

I was completely speechless! Sure, I had been baptized as a baby, but it’s not like I remember! Many of my friends, who were baptized as infants, are atheists now! I didn’t know what to say. He said, “If you were to die right now, would you feel confident at going to Heaven?” I told him no.

I don’t know… it’s just sometimes, being Catholic can scare me. I’m gambling with my soul here! And when I see these hundreds of people on TV in Rome with their gold and statues and matching color clothes and giant hats… I wonder if it’s the true religion God intended for! Does anyone else feel this way?!

Yeah. Ignorant fundamentalists.

I think basing your religion on clothes, statues, and colors means you don’t have any Faith at all. When someone ask you if you are saved, you should reply “no, but I am hoping I will be on the final judgement”…none of us are “saved” for sure while we are living…we will be saved according to our faith, good works, and if we die in a state of grace…nothing else…anyone who tells you they are saved and guaranteed the Kingdom of heaven is a heretic and a liar. The protestants believe that simply reciting the “sinners prayer” is all you need for salvation…how cliche is that. I urge you to please do not go down that road…as a convert, I know the dangers of protestantism…read the Catechism on matters of salvation and Heaven…it is the one Truth regarding all of this…furthermore, Protestantism is so, so easy for those seeking inner peace about salvation…basically as a protestant, you can say the sinners prayer, rape a woman, kill 3 people, lead others to sin, and still be saved, because you have Faith…even the Devil has faith in God…look where that landed him. Let me ask you this, what is wrong with elaborate masses, statues and Bishops dressed up beautifully??? I happen to see it and automatically feel holy.

The Church has been in existance since Christ founded it, and if it wasn’t full of gold and color and pagentry I’d be afraid. This is our spiritual culture, maybe the outer trappings, but symbolic of the journey we have taken since our Savior walked the Earth.

Since we have been around for so long, it would be odd if the Church had not amassed some gold and art. In fact, when some of this so–called “weath” was amassed, the artist was still alive and the work not that “valuable”. All of it is for the glory of God and belongs to God. Should he choose to strike it all down, it will not destroy the Church…it’s really just stuff we use to express our love for Him.

We are called to offer the best we have…and so has the Church done throughout the centuries. You see evidence of our offerings, you see the pagentry which has developed in liturgical worship. Christ DID call for a heirarchy in order to keep his Church pure. Look to the churches and dissent within the protestant faiths if you want to see the contrast. They have no absolute truth and vote on moral issues which to us are judged by the yardstick given by Christ.

God did not come to create a democracy. God is not a politican, is not a democrat, and is DEFINITELY not “politically correct.” He is our Father, a King, and his Word is ETERNAL as his the Church created by his Son our SAVIOR.

I believe it was Father Corapi who actually told us how to answer this question, “Are you Saved?”

“YES!” By the grace of God, through our works, we have hope of eternal salvation, as does everyone. We are all at the grace of God and a simple prayer is not going to get us there all by itself.

Do not let yourself be troubled by what your “friends” ask you. You HAVE the fullness of the TRUTH, let it shine through you. Don’t let their questions and demands mislead you…rather, study your faith, know it, live it and be Christ to them…

They will follow you, my friend. Just as Christ asks us to do, others will join.

Sure, I guess the pageantry can intimidate me, but it’s because I’m struck with awe at just a hint of the awesomeness of God. And just think about the hardworking tailors, sculptors, and other artists who’ve used their talents to glorify God. And the beauty of Catholicism is that you can find everything from showy displays to simple prayerful gatherings with family and friends. You just have to look more closely and hopefully you’ll find a fellow Catholic with deep faith.

And regarding the question, “Are you saved?” the only thing you can be sure of is that it is the grace of Christ alone that saves, and responding to that grace is more than simply believing, but letting Christ do good works through you and never letting go of hope and trust in Him and repenting of your sins. This is what the sacraments are for. Sure, you’ll struggle in your faith, but remember that faith is not based on emotions. Pray on it.

YES!!! It DOES – because I feel it’s true & I’m not holy enough to enter into Heaven…do I have enough faith, what if I don’t confess & die in some horrible accident…will my Dad (who is non-denom) be saved? :crying: It scares me because I know what I MUST do to attain Heaven…but, will I? It also scares me because I have a lot of this Protestant theology & anti-Catholic (subtle…just subtle enough that I didn’t really question it UNTIL I heard the Catholic postions on some things) philosophy running through my head & it’s really making some things just SO HARD TO BELIEVE as of late. I’m working on all that, though…I know the Catholic Church is the truth…I just still cannot believe it!!! Don’t be scared!! Focus on the Trinity!! Obey Jesus!!! Pray to Mary that she will guide you more toward her Son. Pray to the Holy Spirit for His Guidence. Pray to Jesus that He will reveal the fullness of His One Holy Catholic & Apostolic Church to you. Pray w/o ceasing…can’t go wrong there. “Do not be afraid, I am with you…” – Hymn.

I suspect that your friends have a strong prayer life and read their Bible quite a bit which create the sense of spirituality that you find in them. I was very inspired to pray regularly and read my Bible by a Protestant roommate who had similar qualities to your friends. Prayer and Bible reading do wonderful things, and I would encourage you and all of us Catholics to do it.

Does God want to see us dressed up like Bishops? Unless you’re called to be a Bishop, probably not. God wants us clothed in His righteousness. The coverings in our religious ceremonies, like our baptismal gowns, represent that. God may take us in jeans, but our clergy dresses up before the King of Kings.

What God really wants from us is personal holiness. I hope that is what you see in your friends. I hope that is what you want for yourself. It is fully available in the Catholic Church.

I hope you explore the Catholic Answer website, develop a relationship with God, learn more about your faith through reading the Bible and the Catechism. Then maybe you can share with your friends. They deserve to know the fullness of the Catholic faith. Their faith offers them false assurances that they will definately get to heaven no matter what they do, and that they are already saved. The way to heaven is by following Jesus, and that can be a difficult road at times. We need to pray for grace so that we can follow Him. We can trust in Him, but we shouldn’t take His grace for granted.

And remember what the Bible and Pope John Paul II told us: Be not afraid.

Well, men with big hats are intimidating.😃

I’d be more afraid of creating my own ideas about Jesus and his body (Jesus is the head of his body, the Church).
I feel so spiritual around these people
Rend your heart and not your garments. Turn to the Lord in love. It is not about how you feel. That isn’t what it is about. It is about loving Jesus and abiding in him. Try this: Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Rom12:1

Of course God wants glittering sacred spaces. He ordered Solomon to build one, did he not. God orderd the Ark to be covered in gold and statues, did he not.
He also ordered the same in the Temple.
And Revelation, God creates a new City of Gold, Jaspar and pearl.
So, yes, God does love ornamentation. It is His desire and His command.

Actually I think a great many people who feel anxious about their own faith feel this way. I think this anxiety is amplified when one either knows or has a feeling that the fullness of the Christian faith rests only in the Catholic Church, yet they choose not to partake in God’s gift to man…

As for the wonderful buildings and artwork of Vatican City, someone had to preserve history while the iconoclasts were destroying much of history. Thanks be to God that the vatican was able to do just that.

Why wouldn’t God like it? Is it not done to show respect to God?

Others have addressed the other issues you raised so I will deal with the spirituality/holiness you see in your friends. As someone mentioned, reading the Bible and praying is a wonderful way to get closer to God and encourages moral behavior. But, it does not necessarily lead you into the truth. In fact, private interpretation of the Bible is expressingly forbidden by the Bible–2 Peter 1:20-21: “Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.”

Secondly, you spoke of your friend being so spiritual that wild animals have jumped into her arms. Well, that’s fine, but once again, it is not a proof of her knowing all of the truth. God never said anyone had to have full knowledge of the truth to attain to holiness. I dare say there are non-Christians of every religion in the world that are holier than many a Christian of every denomination who merely occupy a pew on a Sunday morning. But, that does not mean that these holy people have all of the truth. Whatever truth they have is what can be known by anyone who seeks God, but he will not know what was revealed through Jesus Christ in his Church unless he seeks out the fullness of the truth.

Also, how can you tell by merely watching bishops process or offer the Mass or by what people wear who it is who knows the truth and who doesn’t? Isn’t that being judgmental? Isn’t that saying you know better than God who is and who isn’t one of his own?

Your friends are trying to take you out of the Catholic Church by any means they think will work. I know because I used to do it myself when I was a Pentecostal Christian. They do not know what the Church teaches, but they will not hesitate to tell you what the Church teaches according to their own ignorance and bias. Don’t listen to them. Talk to your priest or other solid Catholic about these things before you leave the Church Christ founded to follow your feelings (which are terribly unreliable, as are mine) instead of what is true.

Kyle,

You mentioned that you feel very spiritual around these people. Define spirituality. I think you will find that many fundamentalists will use this tactic to disuade you about Catholicism. They are right in the sense that sprituality is a decision to accept Jesus as your Savior. Have you ever heard your parents, family, priest tell you to do something different? They will tell you things like “Did you know you can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?” And I would ask again: Have you ever heard your parents, family, priest tell you to do something that contradicts this? I would recommend that you attend Rosaries at the Church, visit various parishes, go to your archdiocese, visit Catholic institutions. Spirituality is an active process (though fundamentalists won’t admit it is an act) and therefore requires you to do things to enrich that spirituality. I used to struggle with these same things. Go to Catholic Bible Studies, go to Feasts of the Saints, go ask your priest how you can be involved as a young lay person. Find out if your church has youth (i’m assuming you are in high school) groups and get involved. And guess what? There are non-catholics that are very spiritual; they do exist beleive it or not. But you have to be careful, they will cite Biblical sources to ‘disprove’ Catholicism. And most CCD education you receive assumes you are faithful and don’t focus on you having the ability to defend the faith when needed. Faith can be a process sometimes. I can think of more than one person in the Bible that struggled with matters of faith.

kyle, you sound young. Try to be impressed by the word of Jesus and beauty of the Tradition that He left for us in the Roman Catholic Church.

It is good that your friends are trying to be good Christians. Remember that the Bible they are studying came from the Catholic Church. In your heart you know that the Catholic Church holds the Truth as given it by Christ.

Explore your faith with great gusto! You will find more beauty, inspiration and a true path to salvation within Mother Church than in all the protestant churches combined, if you only seek it.

When you open yourself to the gifts of the Holy Spirit in your study, prayer and life, your friends will be coming to you with questions about your faith. It is called evangilization and JPII taught us to do so.

Thank God that your family gave you the gift of the Catholic faith. Many people take a lifetime to find it! You are blessed with God’s grace. Don’t turn away from it. Embrace it and become the light you are called to be. Witness the Truth to your friends.

Well, if the ONLY experience you had of your Catholicism, kyle, was your knowledge that you had been baptized as a baby, you might be “nervous” when people ask you questions like “are you saved”. . .because if all you had was baptism, but no instruction in your faith, you’re a sitting duck for tactics like those.

So you were told that you were baptized. Did you receive your first communion, first reconciliation. . .and follow them with WEEKLY in the first, and at least yearly in the second. . .receptions of either? Did you attend religious education classes? Do you have a strong faith ethos in your home where you pray regularly, read your Bible, examine and explore your faith traditions?

If you didn’t have the above, then you don’t know your own faith. No excuse now that you’re old enough to access this site. . .you go on line and read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. . .just Google it. And read your Bible. . .there’s an on-line Douay Rheims which beats the KJV hollow for beauty of expression, or an NAB for “modern talk”.

There are free on line courses (Google them) for your faith. There are web sites like Catholic Answers, EWTN, Catholicity, Catholic-pages. . .full of answers to any questions you might have.

Don’t just rely on people and your “feelings” about them. . .go check out the word of God and His teachings which have passed down through the Catholic Church for the last 2000 years.

Learn your faith and LIVE YOUR FAITH–the real deal.

God bless.

A simple answer to the expensive stuff is from the Gospels itself when it relates when a woman poured expensive oil on Jesus. Some of the disciples whined about how the money could have gone to the poor, but Jesus rebuked them.

Kyle,
Have you spent time before the Blessed Sacrament lately? Do you believe that Christ is present, truly present, body & blood, soul & divinity in the Eucharist? If so, then you will never be able to leave Him in this Church. If not, then it is just a matter of time unless you fall on your knees in His presence and ask Him to help you believe.

The rest is trappings. Yes we ornament our churches, to remind us that God should come before all else, and He should receive our first fruits of our labor. But we also give to the poor and the down trodden more than any other faith. Do you know that there have been times in the past when our government has asked the Vatican what was going on in parts of the world in which we did not have a presence? Think of it, there are priests and nuns and religious in every corner of the world. They are ministering to the least of us. The Church is present throughout the world, and this presence is symbolized often in the grandeur that you are questioning. When we are in a church it is nice to be reminded by the majesty that we are in the presence of the King of Kings. Personally, I love the pomp and circumstance. We owe our Lord no less.

As far as your friends holiness, my priest tells the story of how as a youth he was falling away from the Catholic faith and some friends had a bible based fellowship and brought him back to Jesus in a way that he had never been before. He had never had that “personal” relationship with Christ. And he was hooked. Just before he went to tell his mom he was planning on becoming an Assembly of God minister, something happened that he realized he didn’t know his faith very well. How could he leave something he didn’t really know? So he prayed and studyed and found that he was being called to be a priest. He entered the seminiary with this new relationship with Christ and has become a phenomenal priest.

Your friends may have much to offer, but don’t let it separate you from the Truth, from the Church. If they truly care for you, ask them to take an honest look at your faith before they run it down. If they are bent on discovering the Truth, ask them to read Surprised by Truth (I, II or III).

As far as “are you saved” my priest answers I am being saved. Jesus has done everything I need to be saved, it is up to me to accept it, every day. Any given day I can forfeit that salvation through sin, but He has given us the tremendous gift of confession to come back, again and again if we need to. Ask your friends about the example of “backsliders”, where some one was saved then falls into sin. Ask them to explain that. Or maybe backsliders weren’t really saved to begin with. In which case, how would you ever know? The Catholic faith is thouroughly logical from top to bottom. It has to be, it is the Truth.

I see the panoply of history. I see traditions that go back 2,000 years. I saw Jimmy Swaggert’s house being built. I saw the solid gold faucet in his opulent bathtub in the shape of a swan. I saw his little empire being built and saw that it wasn’t ever completed. If I wanted to be a protestant and wanted a plain-jane church, I’d be one. I’d prefer, however, to be a member of the Church which has the solid tranquility of the Romanesque, the soaring beauty of the Gothic, the happy fantasy of the Baroque, and oodles and oodles of immigrant churches which were built by our ancestors to honor God.

Hi Kyle 8921;

Are you really a Catholic? Your response to the ceremonies at the vatican does not jibe with the response of any Catholics I know, whether they are lapsed or practicing. Instead, your comments sound more like those of a fundamentalist. Even the most lapsed and out-of-touch Catholics I know don’t generally imagine demons circling arount the heads of our priests and bishops. Your comments seem far-fetched to me. It makes me call into question the basis for your post.

Are you just here to evangelize? If so, that’s not the purpose of these forums, and I doubt you’ll find anyone interested in listening to you, except perhaps the other fundamentalists, who are open about their faith tradition.

Peace and Charity,

I don’t really think these are Kyle’s arguments. He is in highschool (I’m assuming) and struggling. I think it is important to keep him questioning; sometimes you have to question to understand the truth. It is more important to re-institute the ‘why’ of catholicism.
