On December 7, Gener8Xion Entertainment, a prominent Protestant film company, will release “Noëlle.” Catholic League president Bill Donohue disputes the claim that the movie is merely “a parable of forgiveness and grace”:
“We’ve seen the movie and it’s a gem. In the synopsis provided by Gener8Xion, it accurately describes Jonathan Keene as ‘a young Catholic priest seemingly devoid of genuine human emotion’; his job is ‘to do what he does best: shut down a failing parish.’ Then there is ‘the child-like Fr. Simeon Joyce, a faithful but disillusioned priest who blatantly disregards church regulations, uses church monies to pay an old fisherman’s medical bills and spends most of his time drinking at the local pub.’ Both priests are portrayed as losers.
“Viewers learn that the only reason Fr. Keene became a priest is because he felt guilty about getting a girl pregnant when he was in college; to top things off, he pressured her to have an abortion. Fr. Joyce, the alcoholic, has serious reservations about celibacy and his idea of heaven is a jolly good Christmas party. Fr. Joyce tells Fr. Keene he wants to marry a woman named Marjorie so he can help raise her illegitimate kid, saying he ‘made a vow to God not to the Church.’ But Fr. Keene, a first-class klutz, is also in love with the same woman: he is shown bolting in the middle of Midnight Mass to be with her, knocking over a filled chalice and ripping off his vestments.

This movie producer ought to be put in jail for slandering another religion like that.

Why do people feel compelled to use the Church as their set-piece in movies and books? A friend once said we should start charging royalties for all the priests, confessionals, Mass scenes, etc that fill up all those books and movies!
Another movie for the “must-miss” list!

Yep. Some of them are ex-Catholics.

Fortunately or unfortunately, there is no law in this country against slandering another’s religion - it would certainly have put a crimp in what’s been said on this board over the years. Catholicism and just about every other religion one can think of have been slandered here - although I don’t recall anyone falsely attacking Shintoism:hmmm: .

And how does the movie has anything to do with ‘Noelle’ ???

Think they can attract Christians by using such title.

LOL, if this is like all the other movies made by Protestant production studios, it is going to be childish, silly, and stupid independent of how it portrays the Church. Like a lower budget Lifetime special.

Hey, its only fair, right? They made themSELVES look silly with their “Left Behind” film so now they feel the need to level the playing field by making us look silly.
😉

Yeah! They are as bad as that woman who allowed a teddy bear to be named Muhammed!

I still don’t get why that was so bad. It’s a very common name. In fact according to research not that long ago, Muhammed is the most common name in the world. And I’m thinking there were Muhammeds before “the” muhammed was even born.

Apparently it had something to do with it being an “animal” (albeit toy animal), not a human. From what I gathered, naming a boy Muhammed is fine, but naming an animal Muhammed is considered an insult. There were probably kids in that class named Muhammed. Thank God the teacher got out safely.

I keep telling myself the Catholic faith is like the Yankees. We’re the best, so everyone wants to attack us. I’m getting tired of seeing an evil priest or nun in every other tv show. This movie sounds ridiculous & awful.

That’s not why we hate the Yankees. 😃

We are the only faith worth attacking.

Could you make compelling and interesting movie attacking say, a Baptist minister? A Presbyterian? I doubt it. They all teach different things, they take no moral or social stands like Catholicism, unlike priests, many of their ministers work a second job, and their “ordination” and theological training is questionable, they have no Magisterium, Pope, or any other heirarchy worth attacking, there denominations have no sense of history dating back to Jesus Christ, and they are for the most part independent of one another. So how would you even attack that?

So the Catholic Church is an easy mark that stands out from all the others. I look at attacks like this as a badge of honor…

Hi, zerocrossing. I didn’t mean to not respond to you, I just didn’t see your post.

OK… Why do you hate the Yankees? (Hey, that was my 1st smiley thingey! I figured out how to get them, I think)

Because it has the drama! I mean, the old fashioned vestments, the bells, the incense, the statues, the fabulous Baroque architecture!

Given a choice between portraying a Catholic mass with the rich vestments, the golden chalice and paten and the choir doing a holy chant (I know, I know most Catholic choirs couldn’t do a decent chant if a gun were held to them, but this is fiction); or portraying a communion service at a Baptist church with the reverend dressed in a suit, the little individual shot glasses and the passed wooden plate with the wafers on it; which would you choose? Then add to that the mystique of a celibate priesthood and it just allows for a lot more drama!

True, true…

Genetics. 😉

I bleed Dodger blue. Been a Dodger fan since Sandy Koufax. Dodgers hate Yankees from Brooklyn days, and we inherited it. It was a NY rivalry. Now it’s LA - NY. But it has never died. We were the original Yankee haters, but it was a turf rivalry more than anything else since the Dodgers were brilliant too. Plus the Yankees were pathetic (and the Dodgers great) in the mid-60s when I caught the anti-Yankee fever. So they really weren’t the best back then. We were! 🙂

Okay better end thread hijack before we get busted!

Gotcha, zerocrossing. I rarely follow it anymore, but I had a huge crush on Bucky Dent in the 7th grade…
Back to the thread, it can be scary when you see the amount of anti-Catholicism out there.

'Tis the season to be anti-Catholic. First the Golden Compass and then this…Bill Donahue and Catholic League are going to be busy this month.

I’m going to follow Pope Benedict’s lead as per his remarks in *Spes Salva *and ‘offer it up’–all the anti-Catholicism, all the negativity, etc.

Jesus told us that we would be persecuted. The servants will not escape the Master’s fate.

Let us bless those who curse us, and pray for those who hate us. Let us return good for evil.
