I am wondering if anyone else saw the beginning of a series called Catholicism on PBS today. It was marvelous. It was produced in the Chicago Archdiocese I believe, but was filmed all over Europe and the US. A Father Baron(sp?) was the narrator/spokeperson and was so very knowledgable. Two hours were shown today, with another two hours to be shown next week. There are a total of 10 hours to the series, but I am not sure all will be shown. It was so consistent with Catholic doctrine, was presented at an adult level, and gave me a renewed sense of awe in relation to our God. I would love to see others comments on this.
 
I have seen the preview and I can’t wait to see it. I bet there will be many conversions because of this project.
 
My church has purchased the series. It is pretty amazing. We are using it in snippets as a part of our RCIA class. I really like it but since I’m active in the church I’ve seen parts of it probably 10+ times. I can quote the entire first chapter…
 
Since I don’t watch too much TV, thanks for the heads-up. I’ll see if I can give it a look-see.

Our parish is running the series also, but it’s on a night that I can’t attend. I did go see the trailer and introduction this summer, and it looked soooo good. I really like the approach that Father Barron uses. I hope I can watch it on TV. Thanks for letting us know.

The whole series is the brain child of Fr. Robert Barron who is, in my mind, the finest representative of the faith extant in the United States. I recommend his website: www.wordonfire.org where you will be treated to great video commentaries and articles of interest. In his spare time he is a professor at the Diocesan seminary in Mundelien, Ill.
 
Apparently this series has been around for a while. I hope our pastor will also consider purchasing it. If indeed there will only be 4 hours displayed on PBS, then I really want the other 6 hours. The richness and depth of Catholic faith was wonderful to observe and participate in. I will also check out EWTN.
 
I hope the series mentions the 22 Eastern Catholic Churches (not Eastern Orthodox) in addition to the Roman Catholic Church. Eastern Catholicism has a very rich heritage in its Liturgy and Tradtition and it would be a shame if it were ignored in this program. Most Roman Catholics have little or no knowledge of Eastern Catholics.

Hmmm… thanks for the heads up. I have not watched TV in months, maybe a year. Will have to turn it on.
 
Oh Darn, I missed it. I had seen the previews and was looking forward to watching this but I did not know that it was on last night. I must have been watching The Amazing Race 😦
 
not shown on local PBS station which is partially owned and run by the diocese, I assume cost is a factor since that is why they don’t show a lot of first run PBS programming.

considering buying the videos for the deanery and running programs in the parishes.

I completely agree. Fr. Barron is a superb apologist. He presents the faith in a sophisticated and urbane way, while not coming across as fame seeking. He wont be needing any body guards or commanding expensive conferences to spread Christ’s message.

He is no media star, just an intellegent and fervent priest sharing the Gospel message as maintained in the Church.

No, it was just released in the last 30 days or so.

I believe it does, they travelled the world in the production. Check out the trailer on wordonfire.org
 
I did go on to the Word on Fire.com link and looked at some of the other material. Wow. I also found and article that stated that EWTN was going to run the entire series in October/November and probably again in December. If you get that channel, keep watch. I was not able to find an actual start date or time. Apparently local PBS stations have to purchase these segments for themselves. I hope they do in all your areas.

PS: Note my new avatar - I did not know I could get one! The hummingbird is special to me. I seem to see them at particular moments of my life. I’ll have to find a feeder and try to lure them to our window!
 
Just watched the first hour here in the Detroit area. So impressed, my husband is buying the entire set so we can watch the whole thing. Highly recommended!!!

I must be honest, I watched the first two episodes that aired on PBS and I’m a little disappointed. First let me say that I’m a big fan of Fr. Barron. I subscribe to his Word on Fire podcast and think he’s brilliant and entertaining. While I think this series is beautiful to see I think its pacing is slow. What Fr. Barron has to say is wonderful but there is too little engaging dialog to bridge the time.

Me too but I probably wont get too se itanyhow as my local PBS station isnt airing it.
